Uncovering microstructure evolution mechanisms that accompany the long-term operation of solid oxide fuel cells is a fundamental challenge in designing a more durable energy system for the future. To date, the study of fuel cell stack degradation has focused mainly on electrochemical performance and, more rarely, on averaged microstructural parameters. Here we show an alternative approach in which an evolution of three-dimensional microstructural features is studied using electron tomography coupled ...

Known protein interaction networks have very particular properties. Old proteins tend to have more interactions than new ones. One of the best statistical representatives of this property is the node degree distribution (distribution of proteins having a given number of interactions). It has previously been shown that this distribution is very close to the sum of two distinct exponential components. In this paper, we asked: What are the possible mechanisms of evolution for such types of networks? ...

proper theoretical description of the distribution of the node degree for yeast protein-protein interaction network was investigated to deal with the observed discrepancy between usually proposed models and the existing data. power law or the generalized power law with exponential cut-off were shown to be inaccurate within a wide range of degree values. Proposed linear-combination-of-exponentialdecays- method exactly characterizing the distribution by the spectrum of decay constants revealed two ...

Personality and temperament were hypothesized to function as important factors affecting life history strategies. Recent research has demonstrated the association between temperamental traits and reproduction in humans, however, the underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood. This study presents evidence for an association between temperamental traits and woman's fecundity, as indicated by levels of ovarian steroid hormones during the menstrual cycle. On a large sample of urban, reproductive ...

In this report we have analyzed a simple effective model for a description of magnetically ordered insulators. The Hamiltonian considered consists of the effective on-site interaction (U ) and the intersite Ising-like magnetic exchange interaction (J) between nearest neighbors. For the first time the phase diagrams of this model have been determined within Monte Carlo simulation on 2D-square lattice. They have been compared with results obtained within variational approach, which treats the on-site term ...

The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between self-assessed social dominance trait and levels of free basal sex steroids: estradiol and testosterone, in reproductive age women. Polish urban women aged 24–35 (N = 72) filled in Trait Dominance–Submissiveness Scale (TDS) and State and Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). They also gave a single blood sample during the follicular phase of the following menstrual cycle. The blood sample was analyzed for concentration of free testosterone (T), ...

In this paper the two-dimensional extended Hubbard model with intersite magnetic Ising-like interaction in the atomic limit is analyzed by means of the classical Monte Carlo method in the grand canonical ensemble.Such an eective simple model could describe behavior of insulating (anti)ferromagnets. In the model considered the Coulomb interaction (U ) is on-site and the magnetic interactions in z-direction (J > 0, antiferromagnetic) are restricted to nearest-neighbors.Simulations of the model have been performed ...

Abstract The development of novel implants subjected to surface modification to achieve high osteointegration properties at simultaneous antimicrobial activity is a highly current problem. This study involved different surface treatments of titanium surface, mainly by electrochemical oxidation to produce a nanotubular oxide layer (TNTs), a subsequent electrochemical reduction of silver nitrate and decoration of a nanotubular surface with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), and finally electrophoretic deposition ( ...

In this work we focus on the study of phase separation in the zero-bandwidth extended Hubbard with nearest-neighbors intersite Ising-like magnetic interactions $J$ and on-site Coulomb interactions $U$. The system has been analyzed by means of Monte Carlo simulations (in the grand canonical ensemble) on two dimensional square lattice (with $N=L\times L =400$ sites) and the results for $U/(4J)=2$ as a function of chemical potential and electron concentration have been obtained. Depending on the values of ...

Metallic materials for long-term load-bearing implants still do not provide high antimicrobial activity while maintaining strong compatibility with bone cells. This study aimed to modify the surface of Ti13Nb13Zr alloy by electrophoretic deposition of a chitosan coating with a covalently attached Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) peptide. The suspensions for coating deposition were prepared in two different ways either using hydroxyacetic acid or a carbon dioxide saturation process. The coatings were deposited using ...

A relatively new approach to subcellular research is Raman microscopy with the application of sensors called Raman probes. This paper describes the use of the sensitive and specific Raman probe, 3-O-propargyl-d-glucose (3-OPG), to track metabolic changes in endothelial cells (ECs). ECs play a significant role in a healthy and dysfunctional state, the latter is correlated with a range of lifestyle diseases, particularly with cardiovascular disorders. The metabolism and glucose uptake may reflect the ...

Composite coatings based on chitosan and zinc nanoparticles (ZnNPs) were successfully produced on Ti13Zr13Nb substrates by cathodic electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The unfavorable phenomenon of water electrolysis-induced nonuniformity was reduced by applying a low voltage (20 V) and a short deposition time (1 min). Surface analysis (roughness and hydrophilicity) reveals the potential of these coatings for enhancing cell attachment and bone-implant integration. However, there is a concern about adhesion ...

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) remains a leading cause of global mortality, while survivors are burdened with long-term neurological and cardiovascular complications. OHCA management at the hospital level remains challenging, due to heterogeneity of OHCA presentation, the critical status of OHCA patients reaching the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), and the demands of post ROSC treatment. The validity and optimal timing for coronary angiography is one important, yet not fully defined, ...

As evidenced by recent survey results, majority of asteroids are slow rotators (P>12 h), but lack spin and shape models due to selection bias. This bias is skewing our overall understanding of the spins, shapes, and sizes of asteroids, as well as of their other properties. Also, diameter determinations for large (>60km) and medium-sized asteroids (between 30 and 60 km) often vary by over 30% for multiple reasons. Our long-term project is focused on a few tens of slow rotators with periods of up to ...
