In 2008, we published the first set of guidelines for standardizing research in autophagy. Since then, this topic has received increasing attention, and many scientists have entered the field. Our knowledge base and relevant new technologies have also been expanding. Thus, it is important to formulate on a regular basis updated guidelines for monitoring autophagy in different organisms. Despite numerous reviews, there continues to be confusion regarding acceptable methods to evaluate autophagy, ...

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is expressed in mammalian retina but the location and potential modulatory effects of NPY receptor activation remain largely unknown. Retinal ganglion cell (RGC) death is a hallmark of several retinal degenerative diseases, particularly glaucoma. Using purified RGCs and ex vivo rat retinal preparations, we have measured RGC intracellular free calcium concentration ([Ca 2+ ] i ) and RGC spiking activity, respectively. We found that NPY attenuated the increase in the [Ca 2+ ] i triggered ...

This work deals with the problem of minimizing the waste of space that occurs on a rotational placement of a set of irregular bi-dimensional items inside a bi-dimensional container. This problem is approached with a heuristic based on Simulated Annealing (SA) with adaptive neighborhood. The objective function is evaluated in a constructive approach, where the items are placed sequentially. The placement is governed by three different types of parameters: sequence of placement, the rotation angle and ...

RFID-based access control solutions for mobile environments, e.g. ticketing systems for sport events, commonly rely on readers that are not continuously connected to the back-end system. The readers must so be able to perform their tasks even in offline mode, what commonly requires the management by the readers of sensitive data. We stress in this paper the problem of compromised readers and its impact in practice. We provide a thorough review of the existing authentication protocols faced to this ...

The mechanisms by which methamphetamine (METH) causes neurotoxicity are not well understood. Recent studies have suggested that METH‐induced neuropathology may result from a multicellular response in which glial cells play a prominent role, and so it is plausible to suggest that cytokines may participate in the toxic effects of METH. Therefore, in the present work we evaluated the effect of an acute administration of METH (30 mg/kg in a single intraperitoneal injection) on the interleukin (IL)‐1β, ...

Over the course of the 20th century, it became increasingly clear that amphetamine-like psychostimulants carried serious abuse liability that has resulted in sociological use patterns that have been described as epidemics. In fact, drug addiction is a brain disease with a high worldwide prevalence, and is considered the most expensive of the neuropsychiatric disorders. This review goes beyond the previously well-documented evidence demonstrating that amphetamines cause neuronal injury. Cellular ...

Abstract Methamphetamine (METH) causes irreversible damage to brain cells leading to neurological and psychiatric abnormalities. However, the mechanisms underlying life‐threatening effects of acute METH intoxication remain unclear. Indeed, most of the hypotheses focused on intra‐neuronal events, such as dopamine oxidation, oxidative stress and excitotoxicity. Yet, recent reports suggested that glia may contribute to METH‐induced neuropathology. In the present study, we investigated the hippocampal ...

Methamphetamine (METH) is a powerful stimulant drug of abuse that has steadily gained popularity worldwide. It is known that METH is highly neurotoxic and causes irreversible damage of brain cells leading to neurological and psychiatric abnormalities. Recent studies suggested that METH-induced neurotoxicity might also result from its ability to compromise blood–brain barrier (BBB) function. Due to the crucial role of BBB in the maintenance of brain homeostasis and protection against toxic molecules ...

The Barroso–Alvao granitic pegmatite field, located in northern Portugal, is known for its numerous occurrences of Li-bearing pegmatites, especially spodumene- and petalite-bearing bodies. Recent work on this pegmatite field characterized other types of pegmatites, and complex mineralization and mineral associations. Minerals of the columbite–tantalite group are found in all the LCT (Li–Cs–Ta) pegmatites from Barroso–Alvao: spodumene pegmatites, petalite pegmatites, and lepidolite pegmatites. In ...

Methamphetamine's (METH) neurotoxicity is thought to be in part due to its ability to induce blood-brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction. Here, we investigated the effect of METH on barrier properties of cultured rat primary brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMVECs). At the same time, transendothelial electrical resistance was unchanged as was the ultrastructural appearance of inter-endothelial junctions and ...

Abstract How can design professionals preserve cultural diversity? A team of graduate students and professors at Université Laval worked with the Innu of Uashat mak Mani-Utenam, a group of First Nations peoples in Quebec, to develop modern housing prototypes that responded to their climatic and cultural needs. Recounting the experiences of those involved in this participatory design process, the authors comment on the challenges in intercultural design and discuss the resulting architectural solutions, ...

Gap junctions (GJs) are specialized cell-cell contacts formed by connexins (Cxs), which provide direct intercellular communication between eukaryotic cells. Although Cx43 has long been known to be a substrate for ubiquitination, the reversal of this modification by deubiquitylases (DUBs) has never been described. Here we report that the DUB-associated molecule with the SH3 domain of STAM (AMSH) interacts with Cx43 and mediates its deubiquitination. In this study, we demonstrate that Cx43 is modified ...

Microglial cells are the resident macrophages of the central nervous system. Their function is essential for neuronal tissue homeostasis. After inflammatory stimuli, microglial cells become activated changing from a resting and highly ramified cell shape to an amoeboid‐like morphology. These morphological changes are associated with the release of proinflammatory cytokines and glutamate, as well as with high phagocytic activity. The acquisition of such phenotype has been associated with activation ...

After several years of research on cryptographic models for privacy in RFID systems, it appears that no universally model exists yet. Experience shows that security experts usually prefer using their own ad-hoc model than the existing ones. In particular, the impossibility of the models to refine the privacy assessment of different protocols has been highlighted in several studies. The paper emphasizes the necessity to define a new model capable of comparing protocols meaningfully. It introduces ...

The rise of wireless applications based on RFID has brought up major concerns on privacy. Indeed nowadays, when such an application is deployed, informed customers yearn for guarantees that their privacy will not be threatened. One formal way to perform this task is to assess the privacy level of the RFID application with a model. However, if the chosen model does not reflect the assumptions and requirements of the analyzed application, it may misevaluate its privacy level. Therefore, selecting ...

A main function of the heart is to pump blood to the tissues and organs of the body. Although formed by different types of cells, the cardiomyocytes are the ones responsible for the coordinated and synchronized heart contraction. Given their low mitotic activity, cardiomyocytes largely depend on protein degradation mechanisms to maintain proteostasis and energetic balance. Autophagy, one of the main pathways whereby cells eliminate damaged, nonfunctional, or obsolete proteins, and organelles, is ...

Efficient electric activation and action potential propagation in the heart largely depends on gap junction (GJ) channels, formed by connexins (Cx) localized at the intercalated discs (IDs). Therefore, fine-tuning and maintenance of GJ in cardiomyocytes is essential for normal heart function. Several mechanisms have been implicated in the regulation of the amount of Cx43 at the plasma membrane. Results from our lab demonstrated that Nedd4-mediated ubiquitination of Cx43 signals internalization and ...

Abstract Intercellular communication is vital to ensure tissue and organism homeostasis and can occur directly, between neighbour cells via gap junctions (GJ), or indirectly, at longer distances, through extracellular vesicles, including exosomes. Exosomes, as intercellular carriers of messenger molecules, mediate the transfer of biological information between donor and acceptor cells. Although the biological effects of exosomes in target cells have been intensively studied, the mechanisms that govern ...
