Background and Objectives: Blood flow restriction during low-load exercise stimulates similar muscle adaptations to those normally observed with higher loads. Differences in the arterial occlusion pressure (AOP) between limbs and between sexes are unclear. We compared the AOP of the superficial femoral artery in the dominant and non-dominant legs, and the relationship between blood flow and occlusion pressure in 35 (16 males, 19 females) young adults. Materials and Methods: Using ultrasound, we measured ...

Common infections of the skin such as impetigo and scabies represent a large burden of disease globally, being particularly prevalent in tropical and resource-limited settings. Efforts to address these infections through mass drug administrations have recently been shown as efficacious and safe. In Samoa, a Pacific Island nation, there is a marked lack of epidemiological data for these neglected tropical diseases, or appreciation of their drivers in this setting. An observational, cross-sectional ...

This Series paper describes the current state of cancer control in Pacific island countries and territories (PICTs). PICTs are diverse but face common challenges of having small, geographically dispersed, isolated populations, with restricted resources, fragile ecological and economic systems, and overburdened health services. PICTs face a triple burden of infection-related cancers, rapid transition to lifestyle-related diseases, and ageing populations; additionally, PICTs are increasingly having ...

Summary: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) disproportionately affects Māori (the indigenous people of New Zealand [NZ]) as well as Pacific people, particularly from Samoa, Tonga, and Fiji. As New Zealand is home to the largest population of Pacific people, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands fulfil the definition of a CKD 'hotspot'. Although diabetic nephropathy is the major cause of CKD, with disproportionately higher rates in NZ Māori and Pacific people, there is increasing evidence that there is a familial ...

Abstract Background Global health education partnerships should be collaborative and reciprocal to ensure mutual benefit. Utilisation of digital technologies can overcome geographic boundaries and facilitate collaborative global health learning. Global Health Classroom (GHCR) is a collaborative global health learning model involving medical students from different countries learning about each other’s health systems, cultures, and determinants of health via videoconference. Principles of reciprocity ...

BackgroundThere is limited literature on kidney disease in the Pacific Region, despite it being recognised as a leading cause of death in some Pacific Island nations. Kidney replacement therapy is only available in a handful of Pacific Islands. This paper reports the epidemiology of haemodialysis patients in Samoa.MethodsRegistry data from the National Kidney Foundation of Samoa was analysed to estimate the incidence and prevalence rates of kidney failure from the rates of haemodialysis in Samoa ...

Pacific peoples have higher rates of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and are five times more likely to commence kidney replacement therapy compared with New Zealand (NZ) Europeans. As the majority live Auckland, this study looked at the prevalence of CKD in two Auckland Pacific Island health providers caring for a large proportion of Pacific peoples, of which almost 50% are Samoan, as well as NZ Europeans.

Objectives In 2019, under the World Kidney Day theme of ‘Kidney health for everyone everywhere’, the National Kidney Foundation of Samoa undertook an extensive community screening campaign to detect the estimated prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its associated risk factors in the community. Participants All participants were self-referrals ...

Background: Like other LMICs, many Pacific Island countries and territories (PICTs) have fragile and overburdened health systems with which to combat an increasing burden of cancer. Additionally, a combination of small geographically dispersed populations, limited resources, isolation and frequent natural disasters make cancer control in Pacific Islands also significantly different to elsewhere in the world. No prior work has provided a stocktake of current capacity for diagnosis and treatment of ...

Professional organizations advise prescribing intensity of aerobic exercise using heart rate reserve (%HRR) which is presumed to have a 1:1 relationship with either maximal oxygen uptake (%VO2max) or %VO2 reserve (%VO2R). Even though running and cycling are popular modes of training, these relationships have not been investigated in a group of males and females during both running and cycling. This study evaluated the %HRR-%VO2max and %HRR–%VO2R relationships in 41 college-aged males (n = 21) and females (n = ...

Use of blood flow restriction (BFR) during strength training results in an increase in muscle strength and mass when using light loads (20-30% of 1 RM). Only a few studies have reported actual arterial blood flow characteristics during BFR. In addition, research reporting blood flow characteristics in the dominant and non-dominant limb in both males and females is lacking. PURPOSE: This study compared femoral artery occlusion pressure (AOP) and femoral artery blood flow characteristics at different ...

Although the direct measurement of VO2max during an exercise test provides the most accurate assessment of cardiorespiratory fitness, estimates of VO2max are often more practical. Prior research suggests that VO2max obtained during a treadmill maximal graded exercise test can be accurately estimated in men using the Heart Rate Ratio Method. This method estimates VO2max using the following equation: VO2max (mL/kg/min) = (HRmax / HRrest) x 15. The validity of this equation to estimate VO2max has not been ...
