Abstract Objective Tissue hypoxia is closely associated with arthritis pathogenesis, and extracellular high mobility group box chromosomal protein 1 (HMGB‐1) released from injured cells also has a role in arthritis development. This study was thus undertaken to investigate the hypothesis that extracellular HMGB‐1 may be a coupling factor between hypoxia and inflammation in arthritis. Methods Concentrations of tumor necrosis factor α, interleukin‐6, vascular endothelial growth factor, lactic acid, ...

Takeo Fukuda,

Multispan suspension bridges can be exactly and conveniently analyzed by the writer's method, which was derived by means of finite difference calculus with due consideration to the flexure of towers. The method can be applied to bridges with any number of spans, irrespective of whether the cables rest on movable saddles or are anchored at tower tops. Results are shown of analyses made on a 5,000 m five-span bridge with a 1,500 m center span and on a 3,220 m four-span bridge, both tentatively designed ...

An outbreak of type B botulism occurred in Miyazaki Prefecture in August, 1969. There were 21 cases of which three resulted in death of patients. This was the first outbreak of human botulism of a type other than type E in Japan. Type B toxin was demonstrated in fecal specimens; Clostridium botulinum type B was isolated from a single patient. Bottled caviar imported from West Germany was most strongly suspected of being the vehicle.

We report on the results of optical and near-infrared photometry of the cluster of galaxies A 851 (= CL 0939+4713) carried out as one of the first-light observations of the 8.2 m Subaru telescope on Mauna Kea. Images as sharp as 0″.3 FWHM in K′ and 0″.45 in R were obtained in these observations. The 3σ limiting magnitudes for points sources in 0″.3 seeing with a 0″.6 software aperture were shown to go down to R = 28.1, J = 25.1, and K′; = 24.0, respectively, for about 1 hour integration. Subaru photometry ...

This paper describes the first light and subsequent test observations with the 8.2 m aperture Subaru Telescope constructed at the summit of Mauna Kea. Following the engineering first light, which started 1998 December, the astronomical first light and test observations were carried out in 1999 January with 4 testing instruments under seeing conditions of 0″.2*#x2013;0″.5 for near-infrared and 0″.3–0″.6 for optical wavelengths. The actively supported primary mirror was shown to achieve an overall ...

Nowadays various analgesic medications are used for the management of acute and chronic pain. Among these opioid and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs stand in the first line of therapy, however, prolonged administration of these substance is generally challenged by development of analgesic tolerance in patients. Therefore, it is highly valuable to find new pharmacological strategies for prolonged therapeutic procedures. In this respect, Taurine, a free amino acid, has been shown to induce significant ...

Effects of intraventricular injection of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) on maximal electroshock seizures and decapitation convulsions were investigated in mice. The incidence of the clonic phase of maximal electroshock seizure was suppressed by 6-OHDA. The time course of the suppression was in good agreement with the decreased level of whole brain norepinephrine. The incidence of clonic convulsions following decapitation was also suppressed by 6-OHDA. On the contrary, the tonic phase of maximal electroshock ...

Metacercaria of Stellantchasmus falcatus, homogenized or untreated, were inoculated into mice via peritoneal or oral routes. The mice were autopsied after 14 days and 30 days, respectively, and thereafter blind passages were done every 14 days with spleen homogenate. Four strains of rickettsia-like organisms ...

The role of the central norepinephrine (NE) system, especially the locus coeruleus (LC), in the occurrence of decapitation convulsions was investigated in rats. Intraspinal injection of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) caused a significant inhibition of decapitation convulsions as shown by prolongation of the latency and shortening of the convulsion's duration, as well as decreasing the NE content of the spinal cord to 35% of the control value without affecting the NE content of the various regions in the ...

"Hyuga" fever, reportedly caused by Rickettsia sennetsu, occurring in the west of Japan was suspected to be an endoparasite-borne rickettsiosis. No R. sennetsu, however, was detected in metacercariae found in the muscles of grey mullets (Mugil cephalus) ingested raw by most "Hyuga" fever patients. Instead, another neorickettsia-like organism (SF strain) was isolated occasionally from metacercariae of Stellantchasmus falcatus. A dog was inoculated with SF strain. It developed mild fever after an incubation ...

We investigated the antinociceptive effects produced by peripheral electric stimulation (PES) in mice and the influence of administration of l-5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), methysergide and naloxone on the antinociceptive effects of the PES. Administration of 5-HTP enhanced antinociceptive effects induced by PES, while methysergide and naloxone abolished this antinociception. The mechanisms of analgesia produced by PES involve both endogenous opiate systems and central serotonergic mechanisms.

Postural myoclonus associated with long-term administration of neuroleptics was demonstrated in schizophrenic patients. Sixty patients who had been taking neuroleptics for more than 3 months were investigated for myoclonus and the relationships between postural myoclonus and age, duration of illness, duration of medication, current daily dose, cumulative dose, occurrence of abnormal finger movement, parkinsonism, and tardive dyskinesia were evaluated. Twenty-three patients (38%) showed postural myoclonus ...

A new fungal metabolite designated calpinactam (1) was isolated from the culture broth of Mortierella alpina FKI-4905, and its structure was elucidated by spectroscopic analyses including NMR experiments. Calpinactam was found to be a hexapeptide with a caprolactam ring at its C-terminal. Its absolute stereochemistry was determined by amino acid analysis and total synthesis. Calpinactam selectively inhibited the growth of mycobacteria among various microorganisms. The MIC values of calpinactam against ...

The role of the N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor-channel complex in ketamine-induced anesthesia was examined in mice. General anesthetic potencies were evaluated on a rating scale, which provided the data for anesthetic scores, loss of righting reflex, sleeping time and recovery time. All drugs were administered intraperitoneally. NMDA (60–300 mg/kg), an NMDA receptor agonist, dose-dependently antagonized the general anesthetic potencies of ketamine at a dose of 100 mg/kg which produced loss of ...

The best feature of our synthetic route is macrocyclization at C11−C12 for the construction of an 18-membered ring after esterification between two segments. A detailed examination of the macrocyclization led us to the samarium(II) iodide-mediated intramolecular Reformatsky-type reaction as the most efficient synthetic approach. To investigate what property of β-blockers plays the main role in suppressing tremor, we employed five β-blockers (propranolol, atenolol, butoxamine, pindolol, and arotinolol). All drugs suppressed oxotremorine-induced tremors but none reduced harmaline-induced tremors. Even though TRH-induced tremors were decreased significantly only by propanolol ...

In a microdialysis study, the administration of Ro19-6327 was found to minimize the increase in metabolites of dopamine (DA) following injection of levodopa.
