A bstract A determination of the top-quark mass is presented using 20.2 fb − 1 of 8 TeV proton-proton collision data produced by the Large Hadron Collider and collected by the ATLAS experiment. The normalised differential cross section of top-quark pair production in association with an energetic jet is measured in the lepton+jets final state and unfolded to parton and particle levels. The unfolded distribution at parton level can be described using next-to-leading-order QCD predictions in terms of ...

The response of the ATLAS detector to large-radius jets is measured in situ using 36.2 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV proton-proton collisions provided by the LHC and recorded by the ATLAS experiment during 2015 and 2016. The jet energy scale is measured in events where the jet recoils against a reference object, which can be either a calibrated photon, a reconstructed $Z$ boson, or a system of well-measured small-radius jets. The jet energy resolution and a calibration of forward jets are derived ...

Abstract The jet energy scale, jet energy resolution, and their systematic uncertainties are measured for jets reconstructed with the ATLAS detector in 2012 using proton–proton data produced at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV with an integrated luminosity of $$20 \, \hbox {fb}^{-1}$$ 20 fb - 1 . Jets are reconstructed from clusters of energy depositions in the ATLAS calorimeters using the anti- $$k_t$$ k t algorithm. A jet calibration scheme is applied in multiple steps, each addressing specific effects including ...

The response-to-tissue-injury theory is currently the favorite paradigm to investigate valve pathology. To the best of our knowledge, there are currently no in vivo valve injury models. There are few calcific aortic valve stenosis (AVS) models that develop hemodynamically significant stenosis. Here, we investigated the effect of direct mechanical injury on aortic valves in vivo and developed a novel mouse model of calcific AVS.Aortic valve injury was created by inserting and moving a spring guidewire ...

Abundant primary sulfides occur as inclusions in silicates and as discrete grains in mantle-derived spinel lherzolite xenoliths from Miocene intraplate basalts on the Penghu Islands, Taiwan, which is located at the southeastern margin of Cathaysia Block. These sulfides are dominantly mixtures of Fe-rich and Ni-rich monosulfide solid solutions (MSS), with minor pentlandite, millerite and chalcopyrite, and are considered to represent sulfide melts crystallized at high temperatures (>900 °C). Some sulfides ...

Neurite outgrowth is the first step in the processes of neuronal differentiation and regeneration and leads to synaptic polarization and plasticity. Rab13 small G protein shows an increased mRNA expression level during neuronal regeneration; it is therefore thought to be involved in this process. We previously identified JRAB (junctional Rab13-binding protein)/MICAL-L2 (molecules interacting with CasL-like 2) as a novel Rab13 effector protein. Here, we show that Rab13 regulates neurite outgrowth in ...

Our objective was to describe cases of hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (HHS) in advanced amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients and discuss its pathophysiology. Five ventilator-dependent patients with ALS, with no previous history of diabetes, showed development of marked hyperglycemia (plasma glucose levels of 755–1544 mg/dl) after preceding infectious episodes. All patients had severe generalized muscle wasting and tetraplegia. The initial manifestations of HHS were fever, drowsiness, or polyuria. ...

The thermal stability of a self-assembled micelle was remarkably enhanced by a topology effect. Linear poly(butyl acrylate)-block-poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(butyl acrylate) (1) and the cyclized product, poly(butyl acrylate)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (2), were self-assembled to form flower-like micelles. By means of viscometry, the critical micelle concentrations were determined to be 0.13 and 0.14 mg/mL for 1 and 2, respectively. Dynamic light scattering, atomic force microscopy, and transmission ...

A novel amphiphilic block copolymer, i.e., cyclic polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (cyclic PS-b-PEO 2), was synthesized through atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), followed by ring-closing metathesis (RCM). Thus, a bromobenzyl-terminated PS-b-PEO-b-PS (6) was first prepared by ATRP of styrene using a PEO macroinitiator having 2-bromoisobutyryl groups (5). The subsequent end-group conversion into allyl groups was performed quantitatively with allyltrimethylsilane (ATMS) in the presence of TiCl4. ...

Abstract Tektins, which are thought to be the constitutive proteins of microtubules in cilia, flagella, basal bodies, and centrioles, have been reported to be involved in the stability and structural complexity of axonemal microtubules. Four types of mammalian Tektins have been reported, and at least two types of Tektins, Tektin 2 and Tektin 4, have been verified to be present in sperm flagella. To elucidate the molecular localization of Tektin 4 in flagella of rodent spermatozoa, we performed immunocytochemistry, ...

Spetex-1 has recently been isolated by differential display and screening of cDNA library. It encodes a protein of 556 amino acid residues possessing coiled-coil motifs. In the rat seminiferous tubules (ST), Spetex-1 was expressed in the cytoplasm of elongating spermatids. To examine the subcellular distribution of Spetex-1 in mature spermatozoa, we performed biochemical and immunocytochemical approaches. We found that Spetex-1 that was synthesized in the cytoplasm of elongating spermatids was subsequently ...

New noble gas data are presented for ultramafic mantle xenoliths, occurring in 10–20 Ma old volcanics from the Kerguelen Archipelago. Fusion results indicate that neon is isotopically primitive, whereas helium shows considerable isotopic variations, tending towards more radiogenic values. These fusion results of mantle xenoliths are the first report of a difference between helium and neon isotope systematics, which in most other studies show correlated isotope systematics [1–4]. Helium isotopic compositions ...

Lung surfactant protein-A (SP-A) is a major phospholipid-associated glycoprotein in surfactant, and is a useful immunohistochemical marker for lung adenocarcinoma. Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) has not been immunohistochemically detected in mesothelioma. In pleural effusions due to malignant mesothelioma, very low concentrations of SP-A and CEA can be expected. We studied the value of combined determinations of CEA and SP-A in pleural fluid to distinguish between lung adenocarcinoma and mesothelioma. ...

We apply supersymmetric localization to $$ \mathcal{N}=\left(2,2\right) $$ gauged linear sigma models on a hemisphere, with boundary conditions, i.e., D-branes, preserving B-type supersymmetries. We explain how to compute the hemisphere partition function for each object in the derived category of equivariant coherent sheaves, and argue that it depends only on its K theory class. The hemisphere partition function computes exactly the central charge of the D-brane, completing the well-known formula obtained ...

This letter is concerned with experimental results of aircraft positioning by using terrestrial digital broadcasting signal delay. Passive bistatic radar (PBR) is expected to be a conventional primary surveillance radar alternative, and it can also achieve expanding coverage area of the conventional radar. The PBR sensors allow the detection and tracking of noncooperative targets illuminated by transmitters of opportunity such as communication systems [digital terrestrial television broadcasting (DTTB), ...

Single photon emission computed tomography was used to evaluate regional cerebral blood flow changes during gait on a treadmill in 10 patients with Parkinson's disease and 10 age-matched controls. The subjects were injected with [99mTc]hexamethyl-propyleneamine oxime twice: while walking on the treadmill, which moved at a steady speed, and while lying on a bed with their eyes open. On the treadmill, all subjects walked at the same speed with their preferred stride length. The patients showed typical ...

NIPAL4 is one of the causative genes for autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis. However, the role of NIPAL4 in skin barrier formation and the molecular mechanism of ichthyosis pathology caused by NIPAL4 mutations, have not yet been determined. Here, we found that Nipal4-knockout (KO) mice exhibited neonatal lethality due to skin barrier defects. Histological analyses showed several morphological abnormalities in the Nipal4-KO epidermis, including impairment of lipid multilayer structure formation, ...

Transfer RNAs (tRNAs) function in translational machinery and further serves as a source of short non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs). tRNA-derived ncRNAs show differential expression profiles and play roles in many biological processes beyond translation. Molecular mechanisms that shape and regulate their expression profiles are largely unknown. Here, we report the mechanism of biogenesis for tRNA-derived Piwi-interacting RNAs (td-piRNAs) expressed in Bombyx BmN4 cells. In the cells, two cytoplasmic tRNA species, ...

Loss of muscle mass and strength are progressing with aging. Exercise is a beneficial method to prevent physical dysfunction, and habitual exercise can improve the muscle quality. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of long-term habitual exercise’s impact on sarcopenia utilizing the senescence-accelerated mice prone8 (SAMP8) model. Notably, 27 w SAMP8 were used in this study. Mice were classified into 28 (28 w) and 44 weeks old. The 44-week group was divided into the sedentary group (44 w) and a group ...

Impaired wound healing is one of the most common complications of diabetes, and is known to be caused by multiple complicated factors. For instance, impaired angiogenesis, neuropathy, and hyperglycemia all function to delay subsequent wound closure. Alternatively, moist wound healing, which provides an appropriate environment for wounds, was reported to permit rapid healing by managing wound exudate. Accordingly, wound dressing materials that facilitate moist healing have been developed. The present ...

For the successful deployment of the aeronautical surveillance systems, it is important to select the appropriate path loss model that is used in the coverage design. While the flight experiment is a traditional approach to evaluate the path loss models, the passive measurement of the 1090-MHz extended squitters (1090 ESs) broadcast by target of opportunity is a new complementary approach. This letter examines the feasibility of the 1090 ES measurement for evaluating the aeronautical path loss models. ...

The thermostable direct hemolysin produced by Vibrio parahaemolyticus showed cytotoxic activity on FL cells derived from human amniotic membrane. Scanning electron micrographs of the whole cells showed that the microvilli on the cell surface decreased in number and changed in shape on treatment with the hemolysin. Most of the microvilli disappeared before death of the cells, as judged from the results of staining the cells with trypan blue and measuring release of alkaline phosphatase from the cells. ...
