The complementary strands of the DNA double helix are antiparallel and their replication proceeds semiconservatively. Since both replica strands are synthesized sequentially and nearly simultaneously, one nascent polynucleotide chain grows in the 5′→3′ direction and the other in the 3′→5′ direction. Only one enzymatic reaction is known to elongate the DNA chain: the 5′→3′ chain elongation catalyzed by many DNA polymerases. To reconcile the dilemma of the simultaneous growth of the two antiparallel ...

Endoscopic papillectomy (EP) for benign ampullary neoplasms could be a less-invasive alternative to pancreatoduodenectomy (PD). There are some problems and limitations with EP. The post-EP resection margins of ampullary tumors are often positive or uncertain because of the burning effect of EP. The clinical outcomes of resected margin positive or uncertain cases after EP remain unknown. To investigate the clinical outcomes of resected margin positive or uncertain cases after EP.Between January 2007 ...

In this paper, we first show that three public-key (k, n)- traceability schemes can be derived from an [n, u, d]-linear code C such that d ≥ 2k+1. The previous schemes are obtained as special cases. This observation gives a more freedom and a new insight to this field. For example, we show that Boneh-Franklin scheme is equivalent to a slight modification of the corrected Kurosawa-Desmedt scheme. This means that BF scheme is redundant or overdesigned because the modified KD scheme is much simpler. It ...

New azo-bridged ferrocene trimers, Fc−Fc'−NN−Fc (2) and Fc−NN−Fc'−NN−Fc (3), where Fc and Fc' refer to (η5-C5H5)Fe(η5-C5H4-) and Fe(η5-C5H4-)2, respectively, were obtained in the reaction of a mixture of lithioferrocene and 1,1'-dilithioferrocene with N2O. X-ray crystallography of azoferrocene (1) has determined that the Fe−Fe distance is 6.80 Å in the trans form. Cyclic voltammograms of 3 in aprotic solvents such as CH2Cl2 or THF exhibit reversible 2e- and 1e- oxidation waves, indicating that the positive ...

We first present two tight lower bounds on the size of the secret keys of each user in an unconditionally secure one-time use broadcast encryption scheme (OTBES). Then we show how to construct a computationally secure multiple-use broadcast encryption scheme (MBES) from a key predistribution scheme (KPS) by using the ElGamal cryptosystem. We prove that our MBES is secure against chosen (message, privileged subset of users) attacks if the ElGamal cryptosystem is secure and if the original KPS is simulatable. ...

GAGG(Ce) is a novel scintillator with a fast response and high light output without a hygroscopic nature. It is expected to be a useful detector for charged particles at high-counting rates. However, the response of the GAGG(Ce) scintillator to charged particles has not been fully examined. In the present work, the light output and energy resolution of the GAGG(Ce) scintillator were measured for protons and alpha particles at Ep=5–68 MeV andEα=8–54 MeV as well as gamma rays atEγ=662 keV from a 137Cs ...

Modeling of neurological diseases using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) derived from the somatic cells of patients has provided a means of elucidating pathogenic mechanisms and performing drug screening. T cells are an ideal source of patient-specific iPSCs because they can be easily obtained from samples. Recent studies indicated that iPSCs retain an epigenetic memory relating to their cell of origin that restricts their differentiation potential. The classical method of differentiation via ...

To assess the incidence of and risk factors associated with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) after hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection, we conducted a retrospective chart review of 418 consecutive patients who underwent HCT between April 2005 and March 2007. The male/female ratio was 221/197, median age at HCT was 47 years (range: 0-69 years), and autologous/allogeneic/syngeneic HCT ratio was 154/263/1. Seventy-eight patients developed VZV infection after HCT. ...

Abstract Purpose The purpose of this study was to determine whether endurance and strength hand grip exercises during 3-week upper limb immobilization preserve muscle oxidative capacity, endurance performance and strength. Methods Ten healthy adult men underwent non-dominant forearm immobilization by plaster cast for 21 days. Five healthy adult subjects were designated as the immobilization (IMM) group and five were designated as the immobilization + training (IMM+TRN) group. Grip strength, forearm ...

Flowering phenology of alpine plants is strongly determined by the timing of snowmelt, and the conditions of pollination of widely distributed plants vary greatly during their flowering season. We examined the reproductive success of the distylous alpine herb, Primula modesta, along the snowmelt gradient under natural conditions, and compared it with the result of artificial pollination experiments. In addition, the compositions and visit frequencies of pollinators to the flower of P. modesta were ...

We describe a case of posterior capsule rupture during femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) due to direct exposure of the posterior capsule to the laser beam.A 47-year-old man underwent FLACS for anterior capsule opacity. The CATALYS® system automatically detected the posterior capsule from the optical coherence tomography (OCT) images, after which the operator manually adjusted the line of posterior capsule. Femtosecond laser irradiation was presumed to be completed successfully. However, ...

Abstract Tatton-Brown-Rahman syndrome is a congenital anomaly syndrome that manifests with overgrowth, macrocephaly, and characteristic facial features. This autosomal dominant disease is caused by a germline mutation in DNMT3A . Some patients with this syndrome develop mild to severe intellectual disability, which is sometimes accompanied by autism spectrum disorder or other developmental disorders. We report a Japanese patient with severe intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder with ...

Abstract Background Congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDGs) are genetic diseases caused by pathogenic variants of genes involved in protein or lipid glycosylation. De novo variants in the SLC35A2 gene, which encodes a UDP‐galactose transporter, are responsible for CDGs with an X‐linked dominant manner. Common symptoms related to SLC35A2 variants include epilepsy, psychomotor developmental delay, hypotonia, abnormal facial and skeletal features, and various magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings. ...

Pancreatic juice cytology (PJC) for intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) is a possible tool to enhance preoperative diagnostic ability by improving risk classification for malignant IPMN, but its efficacy is controversial. This study evaluated the efficacy of PJC for risk classification according to international guidelines. We retrospectively analyzed 127 IPMN patients who underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) preoperatively. PJC was performed in 125 of the 127 cases. ...

This paper intends to provide general information about the experiences of numerical relay operation under many different kinds of surges from switchyards in Japan. The main focus of this paper is to investigate the immunity of numerical relays against a switching surge with relatively high frequency in a gas-insulated substation that is considered to be severe for the relay's correct operation. It is concluded that the reliability of today's numerical relays in Japan against the switching surge ...

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the initial rate of hemoglobin and myoglobin deoxygenation during immediate postexercise ischemia, a reflection of muscle O2 consumption (VO2mus), can be a quantitative measure of muscle oxidative metabolism. The finger flexor muscles of five healthy men (aged 25-31 yr) were monitored by 31P-magnetic resonance spectroscopy for changes in phosphocreatine (PCr), Pi, and pH. Tests were conducted during 15 min of cuff ischemia and during 5 min of submaximal ...
