The emergence of chemoresistance is a major limitation of current cancer therapies, and checkpoint kinase (Chk1) 1 positively correlates with resistance to chemo‑ or radio‑therapy. Cancer cells lacking p53 pathways are completely dependent on the S and G2/M checkpoints via Chk1; therefore, Chk1 inhibition enhances the cytotoxicity of DNA‑damaging agents only in p53‑deficient cells. However, little is known about the synergistic effect of Chk1 inhibition with 5‑FU, the most frequently used antimetabolite, ...

Endoscopic local steroid injection (LSI) has been used to prevent esophageal strictures after endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for superficial esophageal neoplasms (SENs). This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of LSI therapy. From May 2007 to September 2014, at four institutions, 40 consecutive patients with SENs were treated with ESD that left a mucosal defect of more than three-quarters of the esophageal circumference. Two patients who underwent esophagectomy after ESD were excluded, ...

In cultured porcine and human thyroid cells, electrophysiological and morphological studies showed that cultivation in the presence of TSH, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) or dibutyryl cyclic AMP (dbcAMP) maintained normal cell polarity with iodine incorporation and organification. Cells cultivated in the absence of these substances had inverted cell polarity and lacked iodide incorporation. In the presence of TSH, PGE2 or dbcAMP, the thyroid cells formed follicles with normal cell polarity and the microvilli ...

Catalytic oxidation of methane was carried out over various perovskite-type oxides and compared with Pt/alumina catalyst. Of the oxides examined, partially cation-substituted LaFe, LaMn, and La-Co oxide systems showed high oxidation activities. Most excellent activity was attained by Sr-doped LaMnO3 (La0.6Sr0.4MnO3), which is almost as active as Pt/alumina catalyst at a conversion level below 80%. However, the increase in activity with temperature was significantly suppressed at a high conversion ...

Synchronous early gastric cancer (EGC) has a prevalence of approximately 9%. The barium study findings of 73 patients with 163 synchronous EGC tumors were retrospectively reviewed, and the size, location, and morphologic type of each lesion considered malignant were analyzed and correlated with the endoscopic and final pathologic findings. Barium studies and endoscopy each correctly demonstrated 116 of the 163 synchronous EGC lesions. Those lesions not demonstrated by either technique were small, ...

Effects of five substance P (SP) analogs on the licking, biting and scratching response induced by neurokinin (NK) 1 receptor agonists such as SP, physalaemin and (p-Glu6,Pro9)-SP (6-11) (septide) were studied after intrathecal injections in mice. Septide brought about a SP-like behavioral response, and was approximately 25 times more potent than the D-Pro9 analog, D-septide. When administered simultaneously with NK-1 receptor agonists, a putative SP antagonist, spantide inhibited SP-, physalaemin- and ...

Despite its high sensitivity for detecting esophageal cancer, chromoendoscopy with iodine staining has low specificity and requires many biopsy specimens, which is undesirable. Dramatic color change after iodine staining (initially whitish yellow and then pink 2 to 3 minutes later) has come to be recognized as the pink-color sign in cancerous lesions. The aim of the present study was to verify the accuracy of the pink-color sign for diagnosing esophageal squamous neoplasms by a quantitative analysis. ...

A 49-year-old woman with dextrocardia and situs inversus underwent catheter ablation of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. A contrast injection into the left atrium revealed that the left atrial appendage (LAA) was adjacent to the right-sided (anatomic left) superior pulmonary vein (PV). After successful isolation of that PV, LAA potentials were recorded from several electrode pairs of a circular PV mapping catheter. LAA may cause similar difficulties during PVI of the right-sided superior PV in a dextrocardia ...

Plasma adiponectin levels are reduced in obese people, and hypoadiponectinemia is recently reported to associate with cholesterol gallstone formation in human. The aim of this study was to examine the role of adiponectin in gallstone formation using adiponectin knockout mice. We analyzed male knockout and C57BL6J mice fed normal or lithogenic diet for 6 weeks. On lithogenic diet, the prevalence rate of gallstone was significantly greater in knockout mice than C57BL6J mice. The molar percentages ...

Hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol in/under compressed CO2 was examined using commercial Rh/C and Rh/Al2O3 catalysts to investigate the effects of CO2 pressurization on the total conversion and the product selectivity. Although the total rate of phenol hydrogenation with Rh/C was lowered by the presence of CO2, the selectivity to cyclohexanone was improved at high conversion levels >70%. On the other hand, the activity of Rh/Al2O3 was completely lost in an early stage of reaction. ...

We developed acicular BaTiO3 particles achieved by controlling the morphology of BaC2O4·0.5H2O to acicular shape and its phase transition to BaTiO3 by introducing Ti ions from the coprecipitated amorphous phase. Acicular BaTiO3 particles have an aspect ratio as high as 18, and the particle size can be controlled by varying the growth period of BaC2O4·0.5H2O, which governs the size of BaC2O4·0.5H2O particles. Acicular particles of crystalline BaTiO3 can be used for ultrathin multilayer ceramic capacitors.

Myoglobin (Mb) stores dioxygen in muscles, and is a fundamental model protein widely used in molecular design. The presence of dimeric Mb has been known for more than forty years, but its structural and oxygen binding properties remain unknown. From an X-ray crystallographic analysis at 1.05 Å resolution, we found that dimeric metMb exhibits a domain-swapped structure with two extended α-helices. Each new long α-helix is formed by the E and F helices and the EF-loop of the original monomer, and as ...
