The semantic structure of paired English adjectives is investigated, and the results are extended-or an extension of the result is suggested-to the vast lexicon of derived English adjectives. It is found that English adjectives are not semantic primitives, but rather are semantically based upon or derived from nouns or verbs. Categories of noun-based vs. verb-based adjectives are set up, and then contrasted with the categories of stative vs. active adjectives. It is claimed that the facts of semantic ...

The contributors to this volume are linguists, psychologists, neuroscientists, primatologists, and anthropologists who share the assumption that language, just as mind and brain, are products of biological evolution. The rise of human language is not viewed as a serendipitous mutation that gave birth to a unique linguistic organ, but as a gradual, adaptive extension of pre-existing mental capacities and brain structures. The contributors carefully study brain mechanisms, diachronic change, language ...

This collection aims first to establish a structure-independent, language-independent definition of pragmatic voice, and more specifically then a universal functional definition of “inverse”. The grammar and pragmatic function of the four major voice constructions — direct-active, inverse, passive, antipassive — are surveyed using narrative texts from 14 languages: Koyukon (Athabascan), Plains Cree (Algonquian), Chepang (Tibeto-Burman), Squamish and Bella Coola (Salish), Sahaptin ( ...

Two theses concerning word order in Mandarin Chinese have been investigated through a quantified study of written and spoken contemporary Mandarin. It is found, first, that Mandarin is synchronically a typical VO language, in terms of text distribution of VO and OV orders. OV appears at the level of 10% or lower in text, and this is true for both definite and indefinite objects. Further, the functional distribution of OV in both texts suggests that it is an emphatic/contrastive discourse device, ...

The history of the treatment of both semantics and pragmatics in Linguistics has been until recently a captive of over-logicization, where the deductive, algorithmic, close-ended, context-free properties of the system were over-emphasized to the detriment of a more realistic view of facts of natural language. A careful survey of even the traditional preoccupations of logicians and philosophers of language, such as reference, definite description or presupposition, reveals that the logico-deductive ...
