In spring 2014, a sudden rise in the number of notified Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infections occurred across Saudi Arabia with a focus in Jeddah. Hypotheses to explain the outbreak pattern include increased surveillance, increased zoonotic transmission, nosocomial transmission, and changes in viral transmissibility, as well as diagnostic laboratory artifacts.Diagnostic results from Jeddah Regional Laboratory were analyzed. Viruses from the Jeddah outbreak and viruses ...

Increasing prevalence of antimicrobial resistance is a major concern especially in light of lack of new antimicrobial agents. Here, we present antibiotic resistance pattern of gram-negative bacteria (GNB) over six years (2013-2018) in a hospital in Saudi Arabia. The study included a report of the cumulative antibiogram of GNB. Interpretation of the antibacterial susceptibility tests was based on the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines and VITEK® 2 system. There was a total of 32,890 ...

Background Clostridioides (Clostridium) difficile infection (CDI) is an important health care-associated infection with variable incidence and prevalence across the globe. There are limited data from Saudi Arabia on the epidemiology of C. difficile -associated diarrhea (CDAD). In this study, we present the epidemiology and incidence of CDAD in a hospital in Saudi Arabia. Methods This study included all stool samples from 2001 to 2018 that were tested for C. difficile. The emergence of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) in 2012 brought back memories of the occurrence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) in 2002. More than 1500 MERS-CoV cases were recorded in 42 months with a case fatality rate (CFR) of 40%. Meanwhile, 8000 cases of SARS-CoV were confirmed in six months with a CFR of 10%. The clinical presentation of MERS-CoV ranges from mild and non-specific presentation to progressive and severe pneumonia. No predictive ...

Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection is one of the most common viral infections worldwide. Genital herpes is associated with other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV. Data on prevalence of HSV infections and other STIs in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are limited. We conducted the first national seroprevalence survey to determine the prevalence and epidemiology of HSV infection among adult Saudis and coinfection with other STIs. Serology was used to detect HSV-1, HSV-2, HIV, and syphilis ...

The newly emerged Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) has infected at least 1,082 people, including 439 fatalities. So far, no empirical virus isolation study has been done to elucidate infectious virus secretion or serotype variability. Here, we used 51 respiratory samples from 32 patients with confirmed MERS-CoV infection for virus isolation in Vero B4 and Caco-2 cells. We found Caco-2 cells to significantly enhance isolation success over routinely used Vero cells. Isolation ...

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), a family of proteolytic enzymes produced by both stromal and tumor cells, appear to have a key role in the events leading to local invasion and metastasis by malignant neoplasms. In the present study, we evaluated the role of MMP-2, squamous cell carcinoma antigen (SCCA), and tissue polypeptide - specific antigen (TPS) in cervical neoplasia. Using Western blotting and enzyme immunoassay (EIA), we analyzed 50 patients with cervical carcinoma (CC) and 25 normal controls ...

Fractional-stochastic quadratic-cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (QC-NLSE) describing propagation of solitons through optical fibers is analyzed. Hermite transforms, white noise analysis and an improved computational method are used to investigate uncertain solutions for QC-NLSE. Specifically, Hermite transformation is applied to convert fractional-stochastic differential equations by Wick-type into deterministic fractional differential equations with an integral term. Furthermore, inverse Hermite ...

The SOX18 gene encodes a transcription factor that plays a notable role in certain developmental contexts such as lymphangiogenesis, hair follicle development and vasculogenesis. SOX18 mutations are linked to recessive and dominant hypotrichosis–lymphedema–telangiectasia syndrome (HLTS). In this study we report on a novel heterozygous mutation in SOX18 in a Jordanian patient suffering from HLTS that was revealed by Whole Exome Sequencing. In this case, a frameshift caused by 14-nucleotide duplication ...
