Abstract As developmental biologists in the age of genome editing, we now have access to an ever-increasing array of tools to manipulate endogenous gene expression. The auxin-inducible degradation system allows for spatial and temporal control of protein degradation via a hormone-inducible Arabidopsis F-box protein, transport inhibitor response 1 (TIR1). In the presence of auxin, TIR1 serves as a substrate-recognition component of the E3 ubiquitin ligase complex SKP1-CUL1-F-box (SCF), ubiquitinating ...

Abstract Transgender inclusion within policy is critical yet often missing. We propose a policy tool to assesses human rights, access to resources and opportunities, language, and implications for transgender and nonbinary individuals. Previous studies have suggested that frailty among older adults with cancer is associated with a variety of negative outcomes, including greater chemotherapy toxicity and worse survival. However, results often do not include patient-reported outcomes, such as quality of life (QOL). The objective of this study was to evaluate frailty prior to receipt of moderately- or highly-emetogenic chemotherapy and acute changes in QOL in patients at least 65 years of age. It was hypothesized that frail patients ...

Day-to-day variations in plasma theophylline concentrations at steady-state have been assessed in 29 hospital inpatients who required theophylline for obstructive airways disease. Plasma concentrations were measured at 09.00h and 14.00h for four consecutive days in the equilibrium state in 13 patients taking 350 mg/day and 16 patients taking 700 mg/day. Analysis of variance gave 95% confidence limits for day-to-day variation of +/- 2.9 micrograms/ml at 350 mg/day and +/- 4.8 micrograms/ml at 700 mg/day. ...

Psoriasis negatively impacts sleep, but the factors that cause this sleep disturbance are not well characterized. To assess sleep quality in subjects with psoriasis.35 outpatients diagnosed with chronic plaque psoriasis affecting at least 10 percent BSA and 44 controls completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Patient Health Questionnaire, Itch Severity Scale, Insomnia Severity Index, and Epworth Sleepiness Scale. For multiple testing, alpha was set at 0.008.Adjusting for age, BMI, and gender, ...

The purpose of this study was to determine whether disposable suction catheters can be reused in the same patient for a 24-hour period without affecting the incidence of pneumonia. The study design was a randomized controlled trial. The study was conducted in the pediatric intensive care unit of a tertiary pediatric center.Subjects included 486 children with an endotracheal tube in place. The development of pneumonia, diagnosed with radiographic and clinical evidence, was the measure. Cost analysis ...

Primary surgical resection of locally advanced squamous cancer of the vulva may compromise the integrity of important midline structures such as the anus, clitoris, urethra, and vagina. Chemoradiation (synchronous radiation and cytotoxic chemotherapy) has been used as alternative initial treatment which may serve as definitive management for some patients, or may reduce the scope and functional sequelae of subsequent surgery in others. Inguinofemoral node dissection is associated with substantial ...

Cell invasion is a specialized cell behavior that likely co-evolved with the emergence of basement membranes in metazoans as a mechanism to break down the barriers that separate tissues. A variety of conserved and lineage-specific biological processes that occur during development and homeostasis rely on cell invasive behavior. Recent innovations in genome editing and live-cell imaging have shed some light on the programs that mediate acquisition of an invasive phenotype; however, comparative approaches ...

Continuing the resolution revolution The living cell contains dynamic, spatially complex subassemblies that are sensitive to external perturbations. To minimize such perturbations, cells should be imaged in their native multicellular environments, under as gentle illumination as possible. However, achieving the spatiotemporal resolution needed to follow three-dimensional subcellular processes in detail under these conditions is challenging: Sample-induced aberrations degrade resolution and sensitivity, ...
