The aim of the present study was to test a mathematical model of the biochemical processes in the parathyroid glands responsible for the secretion of parathyroid hormone resulting from extracellular calcium reduction. A double exponential curve described the parathyroid hormone secretion induced by rapid lowering of blood-ionized calcium in humans with normal as well as abnormal parathyroid tissue. Our data show that it was possible to establish a simple mathematical model of the parathyroid hormone ...

This article argues that the narrow and frequently negative conceptualisations of small island states as environmentally vulnerable and economically dependent are problematic for sustainable tourism development and for economic development, generally. Scenarios presented to date are often incomplete. Narratives suggesting that island peoples are unskilled and lack resources, and that their islands are 'tiny' and 'fragile', can undermine their pride and stifle their initiative, reducing their ability ...

In 336 consecutive autopsies a total of 305 tumors were recorded in the large intestine. Of these, 184 were adenomas occurring in 26% of the 196 men and 17% of the 140 women, resulting in an overall prevalence of 22%, or 15% when standardized to the world standard population (WSP). The prevalence of adenomas increased with age, and a shift from distal to proximal location occurred in the older age groups, mostly accounted for by the greater tendency to multiplicity in old age. Regardless of age 57% ...

Abstract The notion that tourism can contribute significantly to poverty reduction strategies is attracting great interest from multilateral institutions, tourism bodies, donors and other organizations around the globe. Tourism is certainly a major contributor to economic development in many small island developing states (SIDS) and often it is the only industry in these countries to consistently demonstrate growth in recent years. However, the growth of tourism in SIDS is by no means synonymous ...

Water is one of the most important natural resources, and its effective management is essential given its scarcity. In rural Sri Lanka, the management of available water resources needs special attention because investment for water resource improvement is hard to obtain, and water itself is relatively scarce in the drier areas of the country. The Wanaraniya Water Project pipes water 6.5km from its source to individual houses in the village, saving women daily time and effort. The project is founded ...

Objective: Olopatadine, an effective topical ocular human conjunctival mast cell stabilizer/antihistaminic antiallergic drug, was evaluated and compared to selected classical antihistamines for their interaction with model and natural membranes to ascertain potential functional consequences of such interactions. Methods: The model membranes examined consisted of the argon-buffer interface and monomolecular films of 1-stearoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (SOPC) at the argon-buffer interface. ...

In the 1960s the isolated tropical forest enclave of Quintana Roo was targeted by the Mexican Government to serve as the cornerstone for launching what is now considered to be one of Mexico’s most successful economic development strategies – Planned Tourism Development (PTD). This paper commences with a brief review of the role of state-driven PTD in Mexico’s national economic development agenda. Government discourse surrounding the Cancun project emphasised tourism as a mechanism for promoting ‘regional ...

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the long term results of repair of ventral incisional hernias or of defects in the abdominal wall using polypropylene mesh. Eighty-eight patients were operated on from 1979-1996, inclusive. Abdominal protrusion was found in 78 patients. Fifty-one of these patients had previously had an incisional hernia repaired and the remaining 10 patients had an abdominal wall defect as a result of excision of a malignant tumour. The polypropylene mesh was placed extraperitoneally ...

Data from the records of 112 patients who were treated by dermatome shaving for psoriasis vulgaris were analysed. A psoriatic "area" was defined as all psoriatic skin lesions present in a specific region at the first treatment, and 108 patients with 202 areas were included in the study. In 68 patients the treatment was limited to a single area, and 40 patients had from two to nine areas treated, mainly on the legs and arms. Complications occurred in nine patients; one had a wound infection that required ...

In examining the development of the International Geographical Union’s (IGU) Commission on Gender and Geography over the last three decades, we first highlight the advances made to establish visibility for gender studies within the IGU and create structures for more inclusive feminist geographies across national, disciplinary and other borders. Given that many of the early and most widely-known advances were largely within Anglophone contexts, we then discuss the ongoing challenges and possibilities ...

As active learning pedagogies continue to increase in popularity in higher education, new questions have emerged about how instructors can manage all of the associated 'moving parts' of active learning, including how and when to deliver feedback. Currently, little is known about how students perceive the effects of verbal feedback during in-class activities. This study examined two large sections of introductory biology held in an active learning SCALE-UP (Student-Centred Active Learning Environments ...

Attendance to health appointments may pose challenges to patients, especially when living in socially disadvantaged situations, with a fragile network. Inequality in health is increasingly highlighted in Denmark. To enhance social equity in health, a non-governmental organization introduced bridge-building, where healthcare students volunteer to accompany persons in socially vulnerable situations to health appointments. The purpose of the study was to explore what bridge-building entails and which ...

Il est proposé d'utiliser une méthode de différenciation, de délimitation et d'interprétation de signatures, semblable à celle qui est utilisée dans les sciences physiques pour le concept d'unité de terrain. Most of the research on student understanding of evolution by natural selection has focused on undergraduate biology courses for science majors. However, the majority of undergraduates in the United States will not enroll in a biology course for majors. In this study, we identify the extent of natural selection understanding that students acquire through an undergraduate, non-majors geology course. Using a pre/post assessment model, we administered open-response items from the Bishop and Anderson ...
