Abstract: Forest practices have progressively changed over the last 30 years in the Pacific Northwest to address water quality concerns. There have been some assessments of these new management practices made at a site scale but very few studies have attempted to evaluate their efficacy at reducing cumulative sediment production at a watershed scale. Such an evaluation is difficult due to the spatial and temporal variability in sediment delivery and transport processes. Due to this inherent variability, ...

Abstract We examined the structure of periphyton and macroinvertebrate assemblages in 18 Oregon Coast Range perennial headwater streams bordered by mature (6), clearcut (5), and thinned (7) forest treatments. Summer base flow discharge ranged from 0.02 to1.98 l/s (mean − 0.5 l/s). Periphyton was almost entirely diatoms (72 species) and assemblage characteristics were most strongly influenced by substrate characteristics. Mature treatment sites had fewer species of diatoms and less biomass than other treatments. ...

Abstract We compared stream ecosystem responses to two types of disturbances: flood and debris flows. A large storm in February 1996 disturbed four similarly sized sub‐watersheds of the Calapooia River, in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon, USA. All sub‐watersheds had flood and in two, 31 and 81% of the perennial channel, a debris flow affected the channel. For 8 years, we used a suite of approaches: stream temperature, nutrient regime, periphyton and macroinvertebrate assemblages, and resident trout ...
