Aging men and women display both increased incidence of cardiovascular disease and complications of myocardial infarction and heart failure. We hypothesized that altered glucose metabolism, in particular, flux of glucose via the polyol pathway (PP) may be responsible, in part, for the enhanced vulnerability of aging myocardium to ischemic injury, even in the absence of superimposed disease processes linked to PP flux, such as diabetes. To test our hypothesis, we determined the expression and products ...

It had been found earlier that the chloronicotinyl insecticide thiacloprid (as the 480 g litre(-1) SC Calypso) poses a favourably low toxicity hazard to the honeybee, Apis mellifera L. As with pyrethroids, the metabolization of chloronicotinyl compounds involves monooxygenases, which are known to be inhibited by some ergosterol biosynthesis inhibitor (EBI) fungicides potentially co-applied with these insecticides. The potential synergistic enhancement of the toxicity of thiacloprid to honeybees when ...

Microplastics are a relevant environmental concern in marine ecosystems due to their ubiquity. However, knowledge on their dispersion patterns within the ocean basin and the interaction with biota are scarce and mostly limited to surface waters. This study investigated microplastic contamination in two species of deep-sea cephalopods from the southwestern Atlantic with different ecological behaviour: the vampire squid (Vampyroteuthis infernalis) and the midwater squid (Abralia veranyi). Microplastic ...

Biometric technologies are the primary tools for certifying identity of individuals. But cost of sensing hardware plus degree of physical invasion required to obtain reasonable success are considered major drawbacks. Nevertheless, the signature is generally accepted as one means of identification. We present an approach on signature recognition using face recognition algorithms to obtain class descriptors and then use a simple classifier to recognize signatures. We also present an algorithm to store ...

Duffy blood group system is of interest in several fields of science including transfusion medicine, immunology and malariology. Although some methods have been developed for Duffy polymorphism genotyping, not all of them have been sufficiently described and validated, and all present limitations. At the same time, the frequency of Duffy alleles and antigens in some densely populated regions of the world are still missing. In this study we present new tests for genotyping the major alleles of the ...

The all-vanadium redox flow battery (VRB) has attracted increasing attention because of the growing share of fluctuating renewables for power generation. However, the high crossover rate of vanadium ions through the separator is the major cause of capacity fading and efficiency loss in the VRB, limiting its use as an energy storage device. Ion exchange membranes (IEMs) with amidoxime groups, known for their ability to complex various metal ions, including vanadium, were prepared to address vanadium ...

Background— The beneficial effects of reperfusion therapies have been limited by the amount of ischemic damage that occurs before reperfusion. To enable development of interventions to reduce cell injury, our research has focused on understanding mechanisms involved in cardiac cell death after ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. In this context, our laboratory has been investigating the role of the receptor for advanced-glycation end products (RAGE) in myocardial I/R injury. Methods and Results— In ...

We have investigated, using ab initio total energy density-functional calculations, the electronic, structural, and magnetic properties of Mn doped InP nanowires. The nanowires have been constructed along the [111] direction and the dangling bonds on the surface have been saturated by hydrogen atoms. We found that the most energetically favorable position for the Mn atom is near the surface. When the Mn atoms are in ``bulklike'' positions, the magnetic Mn-Mn coupling in the nanowire is ferromagnetic. ...

The anticonvulsant vigabatrin (VGB; SabrilR) irreversibly inhibits GABA transaminase to increase neural GABA, yet its mechanism of retinal toxicity remains unclear. VGB is suggested to alter several amino acids, including homocarnosine, β-alanine, ornithine, glycine, taurine, and 2-aminoadipic acid (AADA), the latter a homologue of glutamic acid. Here, we evaluate the effect of VGB on amino acid concentrations in mice, employing a continuous VGB infusion (subcutaneously implanted osmotic minipumps), ...

We investigated the interaction of As impurities with a 90º partial dislocation in Si. The calculations show that As atoms segregate to the dislocation core. The most stable site for the As atom is at the stacking fault side, which is favorable by 0.26 eV as compared to an As atom in a crystalline position. There is no charge transfer from the As impurity to the dislocation core when the impurity is far from it. The segregation of the impurity can be understood mainly due to structural effects. ...

The homing, behavior and survival of normal PC, but also CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells (HSC), B-cell precursors, and clonal PC largely depends on their interaction with stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) expressing, potentially overlapping BM stromal cell niches. Altered glucose metabolism may contribute to age-related vascular dysfunction. Aging alters expression of polyol pathway enzymes and hence substrate flux via these enzymes. Aldose reductase (AR) is the rate-limiting enzyme in the polyol pathway. The effect of AR inhibitor Zopolrestat (ARI) on improving vascular dysfunction in aged rats was examined. Endothelium dependent relaxation (EDR) was measured in aortic rings from young and aged (4 vs. 26 months) Fisher 344 rats in organ baths. EDR to acetylcholine ( ...

Abstract Succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase deficiency (SSADHD) manifests with low levels of glutamine in the brain, suggesting that central glutamine deficiency contributes to pathogenesis. Recently, we attempted to rescue the disease phenotype of aldh5a1 −/− mice, a murine model of SSADHD with dietary glutamine supplementation. No clinical rescue and no central glutamine improvement were observed. Here, we report the results of follow‐up studies of the cellular and molecular basis of the resistance ...

Abstract Characterization of the genetic landscape of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and related dementias (ADD) provides a unique opportunity for a better understanding of the associated pathophysiological processes. We performed a two-stage genome-wide association study totaling 111,326 clinically diagnosed/‘proxy’ AD cases and 677,663 controls. We found 75 risk loci, of which 42 were new at the time of analysis. Pathway enrichment analyses confirmed the involvement of amyloid/tau pathways and highlighted ...

The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015--2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14\,000\,deg$^2$ of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that ...
