Rainwater was collected daily, at the Portuguese west coast, between April 1985 and October 1989 and analysed for pH, conductivity, Cl−, NO3−, SO22− and NH4+ concentrations. A seasonal variation was observed for sulphates and nitrates, with minimum concentrations during autumn and maximum during winter and spring. No seasonal pattern could be detected for acidity. The level of acidity in rainwater is highly dependent on the history of the air mass. Levels of acidity 10 × higher than average were found ...

To understand the processes controlling the formation of the sediment record, seasonal variations of living communities, fluxes through the water column, and sediment accumulation rates of diatoms, coccolithophores (phytoplankton), and planktic foraminifera (zooplankton) were studied through seasonal water-column sampling, sediment traps, and box- and multi-core sediment sampling in the Canary Islands region (29°N), from the productive NW African coastal area to offshore oligotrophic waters. Abstract The morphology, distribution and release mechanism of the glandular trichomes of Teucrium salviastrum Schreber were studied, along with the chemical composition of the essential oils. Peltate and capitate trichomes are present on both vegetative and reproductive organs. In this study, particular emphasis is given to the capitate trichomes with long multicellular stalks. These trichomes are very abundant, and the secretion material is released by cuticule rupture on the top of the head cells. ...

The thermodynamic parameters which govern the homotropic (e-/e-) and heterotropic (e-/H+) cooperativity in the tetrahaem cytochrome c3 isolated from Desulfovibrio vulgaris (Hildenborough) were determined, using the paramagnetic shifts of haem methyl groups in the NMR spectra of intermediate oxidized states at different pH levels. A model is put forward to explain how the network of positive and negative cooperativities between the four haems and acid/base group(s) enables the protein to achieve a proton- ...

Abstract Background There is a growing concern that global climate change will affect the potential for pathogen transmission by insect species that are vectors of human diseases. One of these species is the former European malaria vector, Anopheles atroparvus . Levels of population differentiation of An. atroparvus from southern Europe were characterized as a first attempt to elucidate patterns of population structure of this former malaria vector. Results are discussed in light of a hypothetical ...

The thermodynamic properties of the Desulfovibrio vulgaris (Hildenborough) tetrahaem cytochrome c 3 (Dv c 3 ) are rationalised by a model which involves both homotropic (e − /e − ) and heterotropic (e − /H + ) cooperativity. The paramagnetic shifts of a methyl group from each haem of the DV c 3 have been determined in each stage of oxidation at several pH values by means of two‐dimensional exchange NMR. The thermodynamic parameters are obtained by fitting the model to the NMR data and to redox titrations followed by ...

LANDSCAPE AND GEOGRAPHY – The word landscape was first applied to renaissance paintings, but the concept really emerged during the scientific revolution that replaced the theological explanation of the world and was part of the events that led to the making of the modern world. Landscape has a central place in classical geography because of the importance romantic aesthetics attached to nature in the early 19th century. It was then seen as a piece of land on the surface of the earth surface as well ...
