Coronaviridae is a family of single-stranded positive enveloped RNA viruses. This article aimed to review the history of these viruses in the last 60 years since their discovery to understand what lessons can be learned from the past. A review of the PubMed database was carried out, describing taxonomy, classification, virology, genetic recombination, host adaptation, and main symptoms related to each type of virus. SARS-CoV-2 is responsible for the ongoing global pandemic, and SARS-CoV and MERS- ...

Abstract The phylum Pseudomonadota is amongst the most represented in the environment, with a comparatively lower prevalence in the human oral cavity. The ubiquity of Pseudomonadota and the fact that the oral cavity is the most likely entry portal of bacteria from external sources underlie the need to better understand its occurrence in the interface environment-humans. Yet, the relevance oral Pseudomonadota is largely underexplored in the scientific literature, a gap that this review aims at addressing ...

Europe is committed to a new growth strategy with no net greenhouse gases emissions by 2050, where hydrogen has a clear role to play. Portugal's strategy for H2 sets public policies promoting an industry focused on the hydrogen value chain. Considering the production of green hydrogen from renewable sources is key, water electrolysis becomes a priority, and with it, the need to assess the suitability of water sources, which is determined by both quantitative and qualitative factors. This work presents ...

This paper presents a review of the state of the art for fault location methods in transmission lines based on travelling waves. The motivations that led to these methods are explained historically. Also, a critical analysis, showing the advantages and disadvantages of each of them and their most common applications, is performed. Finally, a comparative analysis between two of the most widely used methods is carried out using real faults, in order to show the results' sensitivity to changes in the ...

Most optimization and decision problems in power systems include integer or binary variables, leading to combinatorial problems. In this paper, several approaches using metaheuristics and genetic algorithms are presented that deal with real problems of the power industry. Most of these methodologies are now implemented in distribution management systems (DMS) used by several utilities.

This article describes a time-domain transmission line model based on distributed parameters for transient analysis. This model is based directly on the difierential equations for the basic transmission line without any previous simpliflcation. The solution presented here for these difierential equations results in a more detailed time-domain model than others models currently in use, and with certain structural similarities with the distributed parameter frequency-domain model for long transmission ...

For the analysis of power system transients in overhead transmission lines and underground cables, a common assumption is related to the quasi-TEM (transverse electromagnetic) approximation. In this paper, we investigate the applicability of this approximation throughout a wide frequency band when both conduction and displacement currents in ground are considered, typically only the former is considered. A full-wave model is established to assess the behavior of the propagation constant for bare ...

Indigenous societies are known to have occupied the Amazon basin for more than 12,000 years, but the scale of their influence on Amazonian forests remains uncertain. We report the discovery, using LIDAR (light detection and ranging) information from across the basin, of 24 previously undetected pre-Columbian earthworks beneath the forest canopy. Modeled distribution and abundance of large-scale archaeological sites across Amazonia suggest that between 10,272 and 23,648 sites remain to be discovered ...

Abstract This study presents an inexpensive and easy way to produce a microfluidic device that mimics a blood vessel, serving as a start point for cell culture under perfusion, cardiovascular research, and toxicological studies. Endpoint assays ( i.e ., MTT reduction and NO assays) were used and revealed that the components making up the microchip, which is made of polyester and toner (PT), did not induce cell death or nitric oxide (NO) production. Applying oxygen plasma and fibronectin improved the adhesion ...

This study proposes the expressions for return impedances and admittances for the transient modelling of subsea cables buried below the seabed. Unlike buried cables or overhead lines where only one of the external media shows losses, for a subsea cable buried in the seabed both media are lossy. The expressions are derived from quasi-transverse electromagnetic (quasi-TEM) approximation of a full-wave modelling. A comparison of a full-wave-based results and the ones using a quasi-TEM approximation ...

Eukaryotes from the Excavata superphylum have been used as models to study the evolution of cellular molecular processes. Strikingly, human parasites of the Trypanosomatidae family (T. brucei, T. cruzi and L. major) conserve the complex machinery responsible for selenocysteine biosynthesis and incorporation in selenoproteins (SELENOK/SelK, SELENOT/SelT and SELENOTryp/SelTryp), although these proteins do not seem to be essential for parasite viability under laboratory controlled conditions. Abstract Classic galactosemia is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by deficient galactose‐1‐phosphate uridylyltransferase (GALT) activity. Patients develop symptoms in the neonatal period, which can be ameliorated by dietary restriction of galactose. Many patients develop long‐term complications, with a broad range of clinical symptoms whose pathophysiology is poorly understood. The high allelic heterogeneity of GALT gene that characterizes this disorder is thought to play a determinant role ...

Abstract Species distribution models (SDMs) are widely used in ecology and conservation. Presence-only SDMs such as MaxEnt frequently use natural history collections (NHCs) as occurrence data, given their huge numbers and accessibility. NHCs are often spatially biased which may generate inaccuracies in SDMs. Here, we test how the distribution of NHCs and MaxEnt predictions relates to a spatial abundance model, based on a large plot dataset for Amazonian tree species, using inverse distance weighting ( ...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the proteic extract of R. communis on the cell physiology by the osmotic fragility, labeling of the blood elements with the 99mTc and cell morphology. To evaluate the osmotic fragility, the blood samples of the Wistar rats were incubated with the concentrations of R. communis and with the solutions of NaCl (0.4; 0.7; 0.9%). In the labeling of the blood elements procedure, the rat blood was treated with a solution of Tc-99m and TCA at 5%, determining ...

Abstract Aim To investigate the geographic patterns and ecological correlates in the geographic distribution of the most common tree dispersal modes in Amazonia (endozoochory, synzoochory, anemochory and hydrochory). We examined if the proportional abundance of these dispersal modes could be explained by the availability of dispersal agents (disperser‐availability hypothesis) and/or the availability of resources for constructing zoochorous fruits (resource‐availability hypothesis). Time period Tree‐ ...
