Multivariate techniques are used in this study to analyze the monitoring data displacements of a concrete dam, measured by means of pendulums, extensometer bases and multiple rod extensometers, taking into account the action of environmental conditions, bounded by the surface temperature of the concrete at ambient temperature and the tank water level. The canonical correlation analysis is used to evaluate the influence of environmental variables in the displacement of structures and dam foundations. ...

Bacterial contamination is found during ethanol production in the form of biofilms, which can decrease ethanol yield by 30%. Carvacrol, nisin, and hops extract, alone and in combination with SDS, were tested against planktonic and preformed biofilms of Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus plantarum, and/or Leuconostoc mesenteroides. MICs of carvacrol, nisin, hops extract and SDS were 250, 30, 5 and 37.5 mg/L, respectively, against all bacteria. Synergism between SDS and carvacrol (FICindex = 0.125), ...

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has become a public health problem with major family, social, and economic impacts. This study aimed to estimate the association between ASD and parents' age at the time of their child's birth. A case-control study was performed, consisting of 243 individuals with ASD (cases) and 886 neurotypical controls. A semi-structured questionnaire was applied, following by multiple logistic regression. Associations between ASD and paternal age (in years) from 25 to 34 (OR = 1.65; ...

Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disease that results in a disabling and painful condition as it progresses to destruction of the articular cartilage and ankylosis of the joints. Although the cause of the disease is still unknown, evidence argues that autoimmunity plays an important part. We studied serotonin's involvement during ...

Tryptophan as the precursor of several active compounds, including kynurenine and serotonin, is critical for numerous important metabolic functions. Enhanced tryptophan metabolism toward the kynurenine pathway has been associated with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDSs), which are preleukemic clonal diseases characterized by dysplastic bone marrow and cytopenias. Here, we reveal a fundamental role for tryptophan metabolized along the serotonin pathway in normal erythropoiesis and in the physiopathology ...

Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) is an endosomal receptor expressed in several immune and epithelial cells. Recent studies have highlighted its expression also in solid tumors, including prostate cancer (PCa), and have described its role primarily in the proinflammatory response and induction of apoptosis. It is up-regulated in some castration-resistant prostate cancers. However, the role of TLR3 in prostate cancer progression remains largely unknown. The current study experimentally demonstrated that ...

Abstract G-quadruplexes are noncanonical nucleic acid structures formed by stacked guanine tetrads. They are capable of a range of functions and thought to play widespread biological roles. This diversity raises an important question: what determines the biochemical specificity of G-quadruplex structures? The answer is particularly important from the perspective of biological regulation because genomes can contain hundreds of thousands of G-quadruplexes with a range of functions. Here we analyze ...
