Abstract Structure and thermodynamics of pure cubic ZrO 2 and HfO 2 were studied computationally and experimentally from their tetragonal to cubic transition temperatures (2311 and 2530 °C) to their melting points (2710 and 2800 °C). Computations were performed using automated ab initio molecular dynamics techniques. High temperature synchrotron X-ray diffraction on laser heated aerodynamically levitated samples provided experimental data on volume change during tetragonal-to-cubic phase transformation ( ...

The XAFS2 is a general-purpose X-ray absorption beamline. It is the second one built at the LNLS. After approximately 7 years in operation this beamline has been substantially updated in order to improve its experimental possibilities. Recently arrived, a 4-circle Huber diffractometer has been incorporated to perform combined experiments. This collects XRD patterns with the XAFS. Through the development of a new sampling environment it is now also possible to perform these measurements in situ/operando ...

The melting point is a fundamental property that is time-consuming to measure or compute, thus hindering high-throughput analyses of melting relations and phase diagrams over large sets of candidate compounds. To address this, we build a machine learning model, trained on a database of ∼10,000 compounds, that can predict the melting temperature in a fraction of a second. The model, made publicly available online, features graph neural network and residual neural network architectures. We demonstrate ...

Abstract The formation conditions of nitrate–cancrinite and chlorosodalite-type zeolites were studied by investigating the influence of the pH and NO 3 - /Cl − ratios on the synthesis of these compounds. The pH was varied by using different NaOH concentrations i.e., 3, 8 and 16 mol/L (aqueous solution) and the ratio of NO 3 - /Cl − ions was defined by different weight fractions of NaNO 3 /(NaNO 3 + NaCl) i.e., 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%. In the case of 3 M NaOH one additional experiment with 2% NaNO 3 was carried ...

This study provides atomistic insights into the interface between a single-site catalyst and a transition metal chalcogenide support and reveals that peak catalytic activity occurs when edge/support redox cooperativity is maximized. A molecular platform MCo6Se8(PEt3)4(L)2 (1-M, M = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, and Zn) was designed in which the active site (M)/support (Co6Se8) interactions are interrogated by systematically probing the electronic and structural changes that occur as the identity of the metal varies. ...

A renaissance of interest in crystallographic shear structures and our recent work in this remarkable class of materials inspired this review. We first summarize the geometrical aspects of shear plane formation and possible transformations in ReO 3 , rutile, and perovskite-based structures. Then we provide a mechanistic overview of crystallographic shear formation, plane ordering, and propagation. Next we describe the energetics of planar defect formation and interaction, equilibria between point ...

Serial femtosecond crystallography (SFX) is a powerful technique that exploits X-ray free-electron lasers to determine the structure of macro-molecules at room temperature. Despite the impressive exposition of structural details with this novel crystallographic approach, the methods currently available to introduce crystals into the path of the X-ray beam sometimes exhibit serious drawbacks. Samples requiring liquid injection of crystal slurries consume large quantities of crystals (at times up to ...
