The compositional range of ‘Bi4V2O11’ solid solutions containing Na has been determined by means of a phase diagram study using X-ray diffraction and electron probe microanalysis. The locus of the solid solution indicates that Na replaces V in the crystal structure and the BINAVOX family has the overall formula Bi4+yV2–y–xNaxO11–y–2x. The solid solution limits are temperature dependent and for samples prepared and air-cooled from 830 °C the limits are defined as 0.00<x<0.18 and 0.05<y 0.10 are thermodynamically ...

The conformational changes required for activation and K + conduction in inward-rectifier K + (Kir) channels are still debated. These structural changes are brought about by lipid binding. It is unclear how this process relates to fast gating or if the intracellular and extracellular regions of the protein are coupled. Here, we examine the structural details of KirBac1.1 reconstituted into both POPC and an activating lipid mixture of 3:2 POPC:POPG (wt/wt). KirBac1.1 is a prokaryotic Kir channel that shares ...

In this work we study changes in the chemical state of hydrogenated and bare diamond film surfaces after their exposure to water (a mixture of D2O and H2O) vapor. For this purpose X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) measurements were performed. From XPS showing the O (1s) binding energy peak, water molecules adsorb on both types of surfaces. The result of their interaction is different, however, for hydrogenated diamond as compared to ...

A study was made of the phase-change behavior of hydrogen in niobium and in niobium–vanadium alloys. A lattice-gas model calculation for hydrogen in pure niobium in which no adjustable parameters are used predicts a critical point temperature of 460 K as compared with the experimental value of 443 K. More importantly, the shape of the coexistence curve corresponds quite closely to the shape of the coexistence curve found experimentally. The model is extended to the case where hydrogen is dissolved ...

Available data from different laboratories have confirmed that both Ca(2+) and Cl(-) are crucial for water oxidation in Photosystem II. However, their roles are still elusive. Using a manganese(II) complex having a cross-bridged cyclen ligand as a model, the influence of Ca(2+) on the oxidative reactivity of the manganese(II) complex and its corresponding manganese(IV) analogue were investigated. It has been found that adding Ca(2+) can significantly improve the oxygenation efficiency of the manganese( ...

Trace elements have been calibrated by spiking nine carefully ...

For several decades it has been recognized that the extent to the east of lower Paleozoic eugeosynclinal rocks (Fig. 1) is greater in northern Elko County than elsewhere in Nevada. It was early recognized that these rocks are allochthonous; in some places it was demonstrable that they form the upper plate of the Roberts Mountains thrust and rest on eastern-facies (carbonate-clastic) lower Paleozoic rocks. Recent detailed mapping has shown that the Roberts Mountains thrust is not deflected to the east ...

Summary The structural states of alkali feldspars from the eastern end of the Galway Granite show transitions from orthoclase to microcline as a result of late deformation. Analyses of twenty samples for SiO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , Fe 2 O 3 , CaO, Na 2 O, K 2 O, S, Cu, Zn, Ga, Rb, Sr, Ba, and Pb agree with previously determined orders of entry of elements into the ‘alkali site’. A relationship between this order of entry and the melting points of feldspar end-members is discussed.

Abstract Samples of coat and core of coated diamonds have been analysed for nitrogen by burning them in pure oxygen and analysing the gaseous products of combustion by gas chromatography. The samples of diamond coat contained 0·047–0·130% nitrogen, those of core 0·058–0·148% nitrogen. One sample of diamond coat was examined by electron probe x-ray microanalysis. The inclusions were found to contain silicon and oxygen in varying proportions. Electron microscopy showed that the inclusions were polycrystalline. ...

Quantitative X‐ray diffraction measurements were used to study the firing behavior of a typical TiO 2 ‐opacified cover coat enamel. A model was developed for predicting the anatase and rutile concentrations as a function of time and temperature of firing. The model consists of three first order reactions: crystallization of anatase, crystallization of rutile, and inversion of anatase to rutile. It predicts successfully over a wide range of time‐temperature conditions. Discrepancies are found, however, ...

Abstract A series of UV‐curable nanocomposites were prepared with 3‐(trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate (MPS) modified nanosilica under the initiation of 2,2‐dimethoxy‐1,2‐diphenylethan‐1‐one. It was found that MPS‐modified nanosilica together with free MPS could form transparent nanocomposite coats. As the particle size of nanosilica increased, the photopolymerization rate, final double bond conversion, and tack‐free time of nanocomposites increased while the surface roughness, glass‐transition ...

Abstract Ulva armoricana sp. nov. is described from the coast of Brittany, France, using the taxonomic criteria established by Bliding, Koeman and van den Hoek for the European species of Ulva. Morphological evidence strongly suggests that Ulva armoricana is conspecific with the free-living Ulva populations responsible for the ‘green tide’ phenomenon that occurs at some eutrophicated sites in North Brittany. Blades of U. armoricana are variable in shape, fragile, easily torn, and 30–55 lm thick in ...

The strontium oxide–copper oxide binary phase diagram has been reinvestigated under oxygen pressures of up to 600 bar, in the temperature range 600–850 °C. A new, high-pressure phase, Sr0.74CuO2, has been isolated and characterised. The oxygen stoichiometry, confirmed by thermogravimetry, gives an average formal copper valence of ca. 2.5. X-Ray and electron diffraction analyses suggest that Sr0.74CuO2 has a Vernier structure incommensurate in b. The subcells are body-centred orthorhombic: aI= 6.8182( ...

New infrared intensity data for the bands owing to ν3 and ν4 in SiH4, GeH4 and SnH4 are reported. Substantial changes from earlier estimates are found, particularly for SnH4. The intensities in SiH4 are also calculated ab initio using 6–31G* and 6–31G** basis sets. With the signs of ∂p/∂Q fixed by these and prior calculations, ∂p/∂S values are calculated and interpreted in terms of zero order electro optical parameters, charge fluxes and atomic polar tensors. The atom polarisation PA found for SiH4 ...

Shape-persistent macrocyclic host molecules 1 and 2 form complexes with guest molecules 3 and 4 due to the complementary arrangement of hydrogen bond donor phenol groups on the host molecules and hydrogen bond accepting amine groups on the guests.
