In order to identify novel genes affecting cell wall integrity, we have generated mutant strains of the filamentous fungus Aspergillus nidulans that show hypersensitivity to the chitin-binding agent Calcofluor White (CFW). Affected loci are designated cal loci. The phenotype of one of these alleles, calI11, also includes shortened hyphal compartments and increased density of branching in the absence of CFW, as well as reduced staining of cell walls by the lectin FITC–Concanavalin A (ConA), which has ...

Blood pressure (BP) is a heritable trait of major public health concern. The WNK1 and WNK4 genes, which encode proteins in the WNK family of serine-threonine kinases, are involved in renal electrolyte homeostasis. Mutations in the WNK1 and WNK4 genes cause a rare monogenic hypertensive syndrome, pseudohypoaldosteronism type II. We investigated whether polymorphisms in these WNK genes influence BP in the general population.Associations between 9 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in WNK1 and 1 ...

Several epidemiologic studies indicate that NAT2-related slow N-acetylation increases bladder cancer risk among workers exposed to aromatic amines, presumably because N-acetylation is important for the detoxification of these compounds. Previously, we showed that NAT2 polymorphisms did not influence bladder cancer risk among Chinese workers exposed exclusively to benzidine (BZ), suggesting that NAT2 N-acetylation is not a critical detoxifying pathway for this aromatic amine. To evaluate the biologic ...

In a cross-sectional study of 33 workers exposed to benzidine and benzidine dyes and 15 non-exposed controls, we previously reported that exposure status and internal dose of benzidine metabolites were strongly correlated with the levels of specific benzidine–DNA adducts in exfoliated urothelial cells. We also evaluated DNA adduct levels in peripheral white blood cells (WBC) of a subset of 18 exposed workers and 7 controls selected to represent a wide range of adducts in exfoliated urothelial cells. ...

We describe the spatiotemporal expression pattern of Nesp, and its antisense transcript, Nespas. We found non-complementary expression of these two oppositely imprinted transcripts during mouse embryogenesis, in a number of forming embryonic structures. Nesp expression was primarily seen in the somites and vasculature, whereas Nespas was mainly detected in the progress zone, mesenchyme and ectoderm of the limb, and the neural tube.

Abstract Automated methods are described for extracting drugs from urine and for subsequently detecting them by ultraviolet or visible absorptiometry, or by spectrofluorometry. Standard Technicon AutoAnalyzer equipment has been adapted for use in the extraction processes; and manifolds for barbiturates, morphine, and bases are described. For drugs extracted from urine, the limits of detection were 2.5 , µg/ml for barbiturates and 0.2 µg/ml for morphine, Results are given for processing 204-ml samples ...

Cell density-dependent regulation of gene expression in Xylella fastidiosa that is crucial to its switching between plant hosts and insect vectors is dependent on RpfF and its production of 2-enoic acids known as diffusible signal factor (DSF). We show that X. fastidiosa produces a particularly large variety of similar, relatively long-chain-length 2-enoic acids that are active in modulating gene expression. Both X. fastidiosa itself and a Pantoea agglomerans surrogate host harboring X. fastidiosa ...

ABSTRACT In order to evaluate the existing risk to public health in Arizona related to hazardous air pollution, ambient air monitoring for selected hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) was carried out in 1994-1996 in several representative urban and rural areas of Arizona. A wide range of organic HAPs was monitored, requiring a variety of sampling and analysis methods. Stainless steel SUMMA canisters were used for collection of volatile hydrocarbons and halocarbons, which were analyzed by capillary gas ...

David M Mazzera, Terry Hayes, D. H. Lowenthal, Barbara Zielińska,
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of compounds that have attracted much attention over the past several years. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has identified numerous PAHs as known or probable human carcinogens. The quantity of PAHs in the environment has dramatically increased, with the majority emitted from fossil fuel combustion sources. Surface soil samples were collected at McMurdo Station, Antarctica (77 degrees 51S, 166 degrees 41E), during peak summer ...
