Amyloid-producing odontogenic tumors (APOTs) of the facial skin were diagnosed in 3 domestic cats. The neoplasms had the histopathological characteristics of the odontogenic tumor. The neoplastic cells were present in irregular islands, strands, and sheets. The peripheral neoplastic cells of the islands and strands were arranged in a palisading fashion, while the central cells were polyhedral to stellate and randomly arranged. Multiple spherules of homogeneous eosinophilic material were closely apposed ...

A piezoelectric effect has been observed in a cholesteric liquid crystal layer (an electric field effect type, a mixture of cholesteryl oleyl carbonate, cholesteryl chloride and cholesteryl nonanoate) [1]. The layer, subjected to shear vibration, generates an alternating electric potential of the same frequency as the exciting vibration. In the present paper an extension of these investigations is reported to cases with various mixing ratios and also to one of smectic liquid crystals (lecithin with ...

Solid tumors are composed of a heterogeneous population of cells surviving in various concentrations of oxygen. In a hypoxic environment, tumor cells generally up-regulate glycolysis and, therefore, generate more lactate that must be expelled from the cell through proton transporters to prevent intracellular acidosis. Monocarboxylate transporter 1 (MCT1) is a major proton transporter in mammalian cells that transports monocarboxylates, such as lactate and pyruvate, together with a proton across the ...

A newly designed pulse frequency modulation photosensor for use in retinal prosthesis is proposed and demonstrated. The pixel converts the intensity of incident light into biphasic current pulses at frequencies suitable for the electrical stimulation of retinal neurons. Experimental results showed that the device was sensitive over a dynamic range of input light of about 120 dB, and that photosensitivity could be varied from 0 dB to around −40 dB.

Bacterial hooks were partially purified from flagella isolated from Salmonella SJ25, by treatment with heat to depolymerize flagellar filaments and with n -butanol and calcium chloride to remove membranes. Antihook serum was obtained from a rabbit inoculated with a preparation of hooks. The serum contained antibodies directed against the flagellar filament and cell membrane. These antibodies could be removed from the serum by absorption with purified flagellar filaments and cells of a nonflagellated ...

A new architecture for pixel-level parallel image processing in the pulse domain for CMOS vision chips has been developed. Image processing such as edge enhancement, edge detection, and blurring are realized based on suppression and promotion of digital pulses; the pixel value is represented by the frequency of digital pulses by use of a pulse-frequency modulation (PFM) photosensor or that with an in-pixel 1-bit analog-to-digital converter. The proposed architecture is suitable for low-voltage operation ...

Lawn covered earth surface has passive cooling effects and mitigates the hot environment in summer with its evapotranspiration mechanism. Soil covered roofs might decrease the cooling-load of buildings. Quantitative investigation of hygrothermal characteristics of lawn and soil surfaces is indispensable for the utilization of these effects. Eight test pieces, therefore, of lawn and bare soil surfaces have been observed to identify their hygrothermal characteristics since August of 1995 on the roof ...

The expression of Wilms' tumor gene WT1 protein was investigated immunohistochemically in 73 glial tumors, including 60 astrocytic tumors, eight oligodendroglial tumors, and five ependymal tumors. WT1 protein was detected in 70 of the 73 glial tumors (95.9%) examined. Almost all glioblastomas, anaplastic astrocytomas, anaplastic ependymomas, and anaplastic oligodendrogliomas expressed high levels of WT1 protein. A significant (p < 0.001) correlation was found between WT1 protein expression and MIB-1 ...

This paper deals with the optical transmission and the dielectric effects in a nematic liquid crystal film (MBBA) of homeotropic state subjected to ultrasound. As in the case of the application of shear vibration, it is found that not only the transmitted light intensity through the film but also the dielectric constant and the tanδ of the film change with ultrasound intensity. There exists a threshold sound pressure above which the effects are appreciable. The threshold sound pressure is almost ...
