δ-Atracotoxin-Ar1a (δ-ACTX-Ar1a) is the major polypeptide neurotoxin isolated from the venom of the male Sydney funnel-web spider, Atrax robustus. This neurotoxin targets both insect and mammalian voltage-gated sodium channels, where it competes with scorpion α-toxins for neurotoxin receptor site-3 to slow sodium-channel inactivation. Progress in characterizing the structure and mechanism of action of this toxin has been hampered by the limited supply of pure toxin from natural sources. In this paper, ...

Graham H. Norton, Ana Sălăgean,
Gröbner bases have been generalised to polynomials over a commutative ring A in several ways. Here we focus on strong Gröbner bases, also known as D-bases. Several authors have shown that strong Gröbner bases can be effectively constructed over a principal ideal domain. We show that this extends to any principal ideal ring. We characterise Gröbner bases and strong Gröbner bases when A is a principal ideal ring. We also give algorithms for computing Gröbner bases and strong Gröbner bases which generalise ...

Graham H. Norton, Ana Sălăgean,
Suppose that A is a finite direct product of commutative rings. We show from first principles that a Gröbner basis for an ideal of A [ x 1 ,…, x n ] can be easily obtained by ‘joining’ Gröbner bases of the projected ideals with coefficients in the factors of A (which can themselves be obtained in parallel). Similarly for strong Gröbner bases. This gives an elementary method of constructing a (strong) Gröbner basis when the Chinese Remainder Theorem applies to the coefficient ring and we know how to compute ( ...

We show that minimal realization (MR) of a finite sequence and the associated MR algorithm [10] provide new solutions to a number of decoding problems: BCH and Reed-Solomon codes, errors and erasures, classical Goppa codes and negacyclic codes. We concentrate on the MR of the DFT of an error polynomial, thus avoiding the “key equation” and Forney's procedure. We also discuss simplification of the theory in characteristic two and an extension of the MR theory to several sequences, obtaining a new simultaneous ...

Abstract Mast cells and MDSCs are increased by parasitic infection and tumor growth. We previously demonstrated that enhanced MDSC development in ADAM10 transgenic mice yielded resistance to Nb infection and that coculturing MDSCs and mast cells enhanced cytokine production. In the current work, we show that MDSC-mast cell coculture selectively enhances IgE-mediated cytokine secretion among mast cells, without increasing MDSC cytokine production. This effect was independent of cell contact and elicited ...

Let R be a commutative ring and let n ≥ 1. We study Γ(s), the generating function and Ann(s), the ideal of characteristic polynomials of s, an n-dimensional sequence over R . We express f(X1,…,Xn) · Γ(s)(X-11,…,X-1n) as a partitioned sum. That is, we give (i) a 2n-fold "border" partition (ii) an explicit expression for the product as a 2n-fold sum; the support of each summand is contained in precisely one member of the partition. A key summand is βo(f, s), the "border polynomial" of f and s, which is divisible ...

Counts of dispersed spores of the pyrenomycete dung-fungus Sporormiella have recently gained prominence as a technique to examine the end-Pleistocene mass extinction. Early investigations were able to identify Sporormiella occurrence on the dung of extinct species, including squirrel and mammoth. These early studies also noted an important trend in Sporormiella abundance over time in North America, such that spore abundances were high during the late Pleistocene, low for most of the Holocene, and ...

The functions of basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors in activating differentiation-linked gene expression and in inducing G1 cell cycle arrest are negatively regulated by members of the Id family of HLH proteins. These bHLH antagonists are induced during a mitogenic signalling response, and they function by sequestering their bHLH targets in inactive heterodimers that are unable to bind to specific gene regulatory (E box) sequences. Recently, cyclin E–Cdk2- and cyclin A–Cdk2-dependent ...

Functional MRI shows promise as a candidate prognostication method in acutely comatose patients following severe brain injury. However, further research is needed before this technique becomes appropriate for clinical practice. Drawing on a clinical case, we investigate the process of obtaining informed consent for this kind of research and identify four ethical issues. After describing each issue, we propose potential solutions which would make a patient's participation in research compatible with ...
