Cyprid settlement and host invasion was studied in the rhizocephalan Clistosaccus paguri (Clistosaccidae) using transmission electron microscopy. Male and female larvae appear to be morphologically identical. The infestive kentrogon instar known from the Peltogastridae, Lernaeodiscidae, and Sacculinidae is absent in the Clistosaccidae. Instead, the cyprid itself uses an antennule to penetrate through the host integument. This is the same mechanism used by functional male cyprids to implant spermatogonia ...

Several aspects of phylogenetic relationships among barnacles (Cirripedia) are still unresolved. One of the contentious issues is the position of the parasitic Rhizocephala. In most molecular phylogenies Rhizocephala are resolved as sister group to a monophyletic Thoracica. However, since Rhizocephala are morphologically highly derived there is not a single morphological character supporting this view. Here we present data on the early cleavage patterns and the gastrulation of two rhizocephalan species. ...

The external morphology of the dwarf males of Lithoglyptes mitis, Lithoglyptes bicornis, Kochlorine hamata, Kochlorine sp., Cryptophialus hoegi, Cryptophialus sp., and Trypetesa lampas was examined under SEM. New data on the cuticular structures are compared with existing information on acrothoracican and thoracican males. The structure of the male mantle differs among acrothoracican families and thus may have taxonomic value.

From a number of partial moult series obtained by laboratory culture of plankton-caught specimens, and based on drawings from whole-mounted material, we describe all the larval instars, including the y-cypris, of a new species of Facetotecta. The mid-length constriction of the antennulary aesthetasc and the shape of the head shield separate the y-cypris in our material from all other forms of y-cyprids previously assigned to species. The morphology of the present y-nauplii and y-cypris is compared ...
