Healthcare-associated infection (HAI) is a major public health problem. As a form of prevention and control, preparations of chlorhexidine are used extensively; however, the reduction of susceptibility to chlorhexidine has been reported. The aim of this study was to investigate the susceptibility to chlorhexidine and the distribution of the qacA/B genes in 211 clinical isolates of coagulase-negative Staphylococci (CoNS). CoNS were identified by conventional biochemical tests. Antimicrobial susceptibility ...

In this work we present a study on the performance of CVD (chemical vapor deposition) graphene coatings grown and transferred on Ni as protection barriers under two scenarios that lead to unwanted metal ion release, microbial corrosion and allergy test conditions. These phenomena have a strong impact in different fields considering nickel (or its alloys) is one of the most widely used metals in industrial and consumer products. Microbial corrosion costs represent fractions of national gross product ...

This study aimed to assess the impacts of composted sewage sludge and steel mill slag on urban soil fertility and tree growth. The research was conducted in an urban area (Botucatu, State of São Paulo, Brazil) characterised by extremely unfertile urban soils and with high production of these wastes. Plant growth, soil physico-chemical properties, and chemical composition of leafs were analysed during a 12-month field experiment. Principal factor analysis (PFA) and canonical correspondence analysis ( ...

In cerrado regions, during the rainy season, the occurrence of drought periods that compromise essential functions related to the production of upland rice is very common. In order to explore drought tolerant materials, this study aimed to evaluate the productive aspects of upland rice lines under water stress conditions. The experiment was conducted in two years (2007 and 2008) in the experimental research station of Universidade Federal do Tocantins, Gurupi, Tocantins, Brazil, evaluating 20 upland ...

Paper-based Analytical Devices (PADs) have changed the paradigm of chemical sensor development in point-of-need detection and diagnostics. Instead of the univariate method, the potentiality to extract a large quantity of information based on chemometrics techniques can enhance the well-known potential of the PADs to detect multiple analytes or discriminate and classify samples. The proposed article reviews recent progress on PADs using different analytical techniques to extract information (Colorimetric, ...

Although biofilm formation is a very effective mechanism to sustain bacterial life, it is detrimental in medical and industrial sectors. Current strategies to control biofilm proliferation are typically based on biocides, which exhibit a negative environmental impact. In the search for environmentally friendly solutions, nanotechnology opens the possibility to control the interaction between biological systems and colonized surfaces by introducing nanostructured coatings that have the potential ...

Individuals with arterial hypertension often have an autonomic nervous system (ANS) imbalance with predominance of sympathetic ANS. This predominance can lead to injury of several organs affecting its functioning. There is evidence that performing high intensity resistance training (RT) with heavier loads and a lower number of repetitions results in lower cardiovascular stress when compared with lighter loads and a higher number of repetitions. However, the effects of different protocols of RT in ...

Statins are the main resource available to reduce LDL-cholesterol levels. Their continuous use decreases cardiovascular morbidity and mortality due to atherosclerosis. The administration of these medications demonstrated to be effective in primary and secondary prevention clinical trials in low and high risk patients. Specialists believe that a possible benefit of hypolipidemic therapy in preventing complications of atherosclerotic diseases is in the reduction of deposition of atherogenic lipoproteins ...

PURPOSE: Moderate-intensity Resistance Training (RT) has been recommended for blood pressure (BP) control by the main guidelines. However hypotensive effects of high intensity RT using higher loads to muscle failure in hypertensive patients is little know. Therefore, the aim of the study was to verify the behavior of BP after the session of high intensity resistance training in hypertensive women. METHODS: A randomized crossover design clinical trial was conducted with 10 controlled hypertensive women ...

Assess the acute effects of a high-intensity resistance training session on central blood pressure (CBP) parameters of elderly hypertensive women.Forty physically active hypertensive women were included in resistance training and control protocols. Resistance training exercises were bench press, leg press and lat pull-down. The resistance training protocol consisted of three sets of 10 repetitions to volitional failure with 90 s of rest between sets. No exercise was performed in the control protocol. ...

The outbreaks of Zika virus (ZIKV) infection in Brazil, 2015-2016, were associated with severe congenital malformations. Our translational study aimed to test the efficacy of the antiviral agent sofosbuvir (SOF) against vertical transmission of ZIKV and the associated congenital syndrome (CZS), using a rhesus monkey model. Eight pregnant macaques were successfully infected during the organogenesis phase with a Brazilian ZIKV strain; five of them received SOF from two to fifteen days post-infection. ...

Establishing an ideal resistance training (RT) protocol for hypertensive individuals has been a challenging task, given the many variables that should be considered in these protocols. In general, the protocols established for hypertensive individuals involve the use of lower loads and a higher number of repetitions. However, recent evidence has shown that this approach might generate negative effects on cardiovascular parameters, especially in the short term, which may indicate a potential risk ...
