Abstract Pulse‐type perturbation through excreta by animals creates a mosaic of short‐term high nutrient‐load patches in the soil. How this affects microbial community composition and how long these impacts last are important for microbial community dynamics and nutrient cycling. Our study focused on the short‐term responses to N by bacterial communities and ‘functional groups’ associated with the N cycle in a lowland evergreen tropical rainforest. We applied a single urea pulse, equivalent to urine‐ ...

Bisphenol-A (BPA) is an endocrine disruptor associated with higher risk of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases especially in susceptible populations. Because malnutrition is a nutritional disorder associated with high cardiovascular risk, we sought to compare the effects of short-term BPA exposure on cardiovascular parameters of healthy and protein-malnourished mice. Postweaned male mice were fed a normo- (control) or low-protein (LP) diet for 8 weeks and then exposed or ...

We study the properties of an electron on a catenoid surface. The catenoid is understood as a realization of a bridge connecting two graphene layers by a smooth surface. The curvature induces a symmetrical reflectionless potential well around the bridge with one bound-state for m=0. For m≠0, a centrifugal potential barrier arises controlling the tunnelling between the layers. An external electric field breaks the parity symmetry and provides a barrier that controls the conductance from one layer ...

This work presents the simultaneous determination of catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ), employing a modified glassy carbon electrode with tetraruthenated oxovanadium (IV) porphyrin. The GCE was modified by electropolymerization of {VOTPyP[RuCl3(dppb)]4} porphyrin, onto the GCE surface, by cyclic voltammetry. The modified electrode, labeled as VOTPRu-GCE, showed two pairs of well-defined redox peaks for the electrochemical processes of catechol and hydroquinone. In bare GCE, the potential difference ( ...

A simple and robust batch-injection analysis system with square-wave voltammetric (BIA-SWV) detection is proposed for the determination of cocaine and screening of the most common adulterants (benzocaine, caffeine, lidocaine, phenacetin, paracetamol, and procaine) in seized cocaine samples. The sample only requires a dissolution step in electrolyte (0.1 mol L−1 H2SO4) prior injection into the BIA cell. SWV scanning is performed after injection of the sample plug and cocaine and adulterants are electrochemically ...

Although seasonally dry tropical forests are considered invaluable to a greater understanding of global carbon fluxes, they remain as one of the ecosystems with the fewest observations. In this context, ecological and ecosystem models can be used as alternative methods to answer questions related to the interactions between the biosphere and the atmosphere in dry forests. The objective of this study was to calibrate the simple tropical ecosystem model (SITE) and evaluate its performance in characterizing ...

We introduce a new flexible distribution to deal with variables on the unit interval based on a transformation of the sinh–arcsinh distribution, which accommodates different degrees of skewness and kurtosis and becomes an interesting alternative to model this type of data. We also include this new distribution into the generalised additive models for location, scale and shape (GAMLSS) framework in order to develop and fit its regression model. For different parameter settings, some simulations are ...

The p23 protein is a chaperone widely involved in protein homeostasis, well known as an Hsp90 co-chaperone since it also controls the Hsp90 chaperone cycle. Human p23 includes a β-sheet domain, responsible for interacting with Hsp90; and a charged C-terminal region whose function is not clear, but seems to be natively unfolded. p23 can undergo caspase-dependent proteolytic cleavage to form p19 (p231–142), which is involved in apoptosis, while p23 has anti-apoptotic activity. To better elucidate the ...

Chagas' disease, a neglected tropical infection, affects about 18 million people, and 100 million are at risk. The only drug available, benznidazole, is effective in the acute form and in the early chronic form, but its efficacy and tolerance are inversely related to the age of the patients. Side effects are frequent in elderly patients. The search for new drugs is thus warranted. Antiretroviral therapy suppresses but does not cure HIV-1 infection due to the existence of a long-lived reservoir of latently infected cells. The reservoir has an estimated half-life of 44 mo and is largely composed of clones of infected CD4+ T cells. The long half-life appears to result in part from expansion and contraction of infected CD4+ T cell clones. However, the mechanisms that govern this process are poorly understood. To determine whether the clones might result from and be maintained ...

Summary We randomly allocated 129 participants with normal eyes to periconal blockade with (n = 69) or without (n = 60) ultrasound guidance before cataract surgery. There was no difference in the rates of complication, 1/69 and 0/60, respectively, p = 1.0. The rate of intraconal needle placement was 1/69 with ultrasound and 12/60 without ultrasound, a relative risk (95% CI) of 0.07 (0.01–0.55), p < 0.0001.

Snakebite envenomings (SBEs) and other envenomings triggered by venomous animals (VAEs) represent a significant disease burden in Brazil, with 29,152 SBEs reported in 2021 alone with nearly half of those occurring in the remote Brazilian Amazon. Stellar mergers are estimated to be common events in the Galaxy. The best studied stellar merger case to date is V1309 Sco (= Nova Scorpii 2008) which was originally misclassified as a Nova event. Later identified as the merger of the components of a cool overcontact binary system with 1.52 M⊙ and 0.16 M⊙, V1309 Sco showed an initial period of P = 1.4 d before the merger. Post-outburst evolution demonstrated that V1309 Sco was unlike the typical Classical Novae and Symbiotic Recurrent Novae with significant ...

The influence of hydrogen utilized during the thermal treatment of copper substrates on the subsequent graphene growth is investigated. It is known that various parameters such as nature of the carbon precursor, temperature and pressure strongly affect the quality of the graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition. Another important parameter is the hydrogen partial pressure adjusted during the growth stage and in the pre-growth annealing of the substrate. In attempts to elucidate the role of hydrogen ...

Most of our knowledge about the structure of the Milky Way has come from the study of variable stars. Among the variables, mimicking the periodic variation of pulsating stars, are the eclipsing binaries. These stars are important in astrophysics because they allow us to directly measure radii and masses of the components, as well as the distance to the system, thus being useful in studies of Galactic structure alongside pulsating RR Lyrae and Cepheids. Using the distinguishing features of their ...

Neuromuscular adaptations are well-reported in stroke survivors. The death of motor neurons and the reinnervation of residual muscle fibers by surviving motor neurons, for example, seem to explain the increased density of muscle units after stroke. It is, however, unknown whether reinnervation takes place locally or extensively within the muscle. Here we combine intramuscular and surface electromyograms (EMGs) to address this issue for medial gastrocnemius (MG); a key postural muscle. While seven ...
