Recent advances in medical microbiology, epidemiology, cellular biology, and the availability of an expanded set of diagnostic methods such as histopathology, immunohistochemistry, PCR, and bacterial culture have improved our understanding of the clinical range and natural course of Tropheryma whipplei infection and Whipple's disease. Interdisciplinary and transnational research activities have contributed to the clarification of the pathogenesis of the disorder and have enabled controlled trials ...

Visible light communications seeks to leverage an unused medium for indoor wireless communications. A major goal is to deliver very high data-rates through LED luminaires to all places where we use lighting. However, the characteristics of LEDs and the nature of indoor lighting conspire to distort the signals. Illumination powers LEDs have low signaling bandwidth and exhibit severe frequency distortion. Their wide dispersion patterns, required for light and signal coverage, also add multipath distortion. ...

We are at the dawn of an era in information and communication technology with unprecedented demand for connected and automated everything. Both Shannon theories and industrial advances have clearly evidenced that more densely packed networks and a much wider operating bandwidth are key drivers for meeting the escalating wireless network demands. Recently, there have been substantial research efforts on the exploitation of higher frequency bands, in particular the millimetre wave and optical wireless ...

For poorly understood reasons, Black non-Hispanic (BNH) women meeting National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) criteria for genetic testing for breast cancer risk are less likely than White non-Hispanic (WNH) women to undergo testing (Armstrong, Micco, Carney, Stopfer, & Putt, JAMA, 293, 1729 and 2005). Background : A‐gliadin residues 31–49 (peptide A) binds to HLA‐DQ2 and is toxic to coeliac small bowel. Analogues of this peptide, which bind to DQ2 molecules but are non‐toxic, may be a potential route to inducing tolerance to gliadin in patients with coeliac disease. Methods : Toxicity was investigated with small bowel organ culture in six patients with untreated coeliac disease, four with treated coeliac disease and six controls. Analogue peptides comprised alanine substituted variants of peptide ...

The naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber) is a subterranean mouse-sized African mammal that shows astonishingly few age-related degenerative changes and seems to not be affected by cancer. These features make this wild rodent an excellent model to study the biology of healthy aging and longevity. Here we characterize for the first time the intestinal microbial ecosystem of the naked mole-rat in comparison to humans and other mammals, highlighting peculiarities related to the specific living environment, ...

Tropheryma whipplei, the causative agent of Whipple's disease, is associated with various clinical manifestations as well as an asymptomatic carrier status, and it exhibits genetic heterogeneity. However, relationships that may exist between environmental and clinical strains are unknown. Herein, we developed an efficient genotyping system based on four highly variable genomic sequences (HVGSs) selected on the basis of genome comparison. We analysed 39 samples from 39 patients with Whipple's disease ...

Eutrophication continues to be a concerning global water quality issue. Managing and mitigating harmful algal blooms demands clear information on the conditions promoting large phosphorus losses from contributing watersheds. Of particular concern is the amount and form of phosphorus loading to receiving water bodies during extreme runoff events, which are expected to increase in frequency due to climate change. Five years (2015 to 2020) of water quantity and quality data from 11 agricultural watersheds ...

Abstract Transparent thin‐film piezoelectric transducers are attractive for haptic displays. However, for their widespread use in consumer electronics, innovative and cost‐effective processing methods need to be developed. In this contribution the effectiveness of the deposition of lead zirconate titanate thin films by inkjet printing for the fabrication of haptic devices is demonstrated. The 1,3‐propanediol solvent is used to prepare effective inkjet‐printing inks from chemical solution deposition ...

Abstract The gut microbiota is essential for human health and plays an important role in the pathogenesis of several diseases. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), such as acetate, butyrate and propionate, are end-products of microbial fermentation of macronutrients that distribute systemically via the blood. The aim of this study was to investigate the transcriptional response of immature and LPS-matured human monocyte-derived DC to SCFA. Our data revealed distinct effects exerted by each individual ...

We examine relative magnitudes of electric field peaks of first and subsequent return strokes in negative cloud‐to‐ground lightning flashes recorded in Florida, Austria, Brazil, and Sweden. On average, the electric field peak of the first stroke is appreciably, 1.7 to 2.4 times, larger than the field peak of the subsequent stroke (except for studies in Austria where the ratio varies from 1.0 to 2.3, depending on methodology and instrumentation). Similar results were previously reported from electric ...

Visible light communications (VLC) represents a new frontier of communications allowing high data-rate Internet access, specially in indoor environments, where the use of light emitting diodes (LEDs) is growing as a viable alternative to traditional illumination. As a result, LED output intensity can be varied faster than human eye can perceive, thus guaranteeing simultaneous wireless communications and illumination. One of the key challenges is the limited modulation bandwidth of sources that is ...

Background: Whipple disease, which is caused by infection with Tropheryma whipplei, can be treated effectively with antimicrobials. Occasionally, inflammation reappears after initial improvement; this is often interpreted as refractory or recurrent disease. However, polymerase chain reaction for T. whipplei in tissue is sometimes negative during reinflammation, indicating absence of vital bacteria, and this reinflammation does not respond to antimicrobials but does respond to steroids. Objective: ...

Background & AimsWhipple's disease is a systemic, chronic, relapsing disorder caused by a combination of environmental (Tropheryma whipplei) and unknown host factors. Because it is a rare disease, the association between HLA type and Whipple's disease has been studied in only small numbers of patients; these studies have led to conflicting results. We aimed to investigate whether disease phenotype and outcome are associated with HLA type in 122 patients with Whipple's disease.MethodsGenomic DNA was ...

Eutrophication has re-emerged in the lower Great Lakes basin resulting in critical water quality issues. Models that accurately predict nutrient loading from streams are needed to inform appropriate nutrient management decisions. Generalized additive models (GAMs) that use surrogate data from sensors to predict nutrient loads offer an alternative to commonly applied linear regression and may better handle relationship non-linearities and skewed water quality data. Dyad learning is a two-person learning dynamic in which one student observes the other performing tasks, with their roles then being reversed such that both students experience the observer and the performer role. The efficacy of dyad learning has been tested in medical education contexts, such as in medical simulation. To our knowledge, this is the first systematic review that has evaluated the efficacy of dyad learning in a medical simulation context.

Classical Whipple's disease (CWD) is characterized by the lack of specific Th1 response toward Tropheryma whipplei in genetically predisposed individuals. The cofactor GrpE of heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) from T. whipplei was previously identified as a B-cell antigen. We tested the capacity of Hsp70 and GrpE to elicit specific proinflammatory T-cell responses. Peripheral mononuclear cells from CWD patients and healthy donors were stimulated with T. whipplei lysate or recombinant GrpE or Hsp70 before ...
