Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the interobserver reliability and intraobserver reproducibility of the AO/ASIF and Rüedi and Allgöwer classifications for fractures of the distal tibia, and to determine the benefit of a computed tomography (CT) scan and experience on observer agreement for several fracture characteristics, including classification. Methods: The radiographs of forty-three fractures of the distal tibia, fourteen of which had CT scans, were assessed by groups of experienced ...

Two years after stocking 274-hectare Devils Lake, Oregon, with 27,090 triploid grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella (180 fish/vegetated hectare, 6.1 fish/tonne wet vegetation), the total volume of vegetation declined by 30%, whereas the total vegetation biomass increased, primarily from the expansion of short, compact communities of Brazilian water-weed Egeria densa. Comparison of the open lake with areas protected by net barriers, and the results of grass carp feeding preference experiments, suggested ...

We investigated the feasibility of using ultrasonic images to rapidly sort Pacific herring Clupea harengus pallasi by sex and state of maturity and found that this could be done with a high degree of accuracy. We first compared low-resolution ultrasound images of 64 Pacific herring to dissections to learn how to interpret the images. We then examined 112 other fish to evaluate the accuracy of the technique. All of 21 males with gonads weighing more than 2.9 g (ratio of gonad weight to body weight, ...

The external morphology of diploid and triploid grass carp was studied to determine whether the two types could be separated by differences in external characteristics. In a comparison of 27 measurements, six scale counts and five fin formulae from two stocks of diploid and triploid fish obtained from commercial producers, analysis of covariance and discriminant analysis indicated a classification accuracy of only 65–85%. Clearly, triploid grass carp differentiated by external morphology alone should ...

We performed a prospective study of forty-nine displaced fractures of the tibial plafond in forty-eight patients managed, at three centers, with an articulated external fixator placed medially across the ankle joint. Forty ankles had interfragmental screw fixation of a reduced articular fracture, and fourteen ankles had bone-grafting. The average duration of external fixation was twelve weeks. All of the fractures healed (one after delayed bone-grafting). There were no infections in any of the operative ...

The usual method for calculation of the "sensitivity" of thyrotropin immunometric assays is multireplicate analysis of the zero analyte standard. Although this is a statistically valid estimate of the scatter likely to be found in the response variable, it is unrelated to normal analytical practice (usually analysis in duplicate) and estimates intra-assay errors only. This study was designed to assess the analytical performance of 10 immunometric assays used routinely for measurement of thyrotropin ...

Abstract Background A typical genetical genomics experiment results in four separate data sets; genotype, gene expression, higher-order phenotypic data and metadata that describe the protocols, processing and the array platform. Used in concert, these data sets provide the opportunity to perform genetic analysis at a systems level. Their predictive power is largely determined by the gene expression dataset where tens of millions of data points can be generated using currently available mRNA profiling ...

Behavioral and emotional dysregulation in childhood may be understood as prodromal to adult psychopathology. Additionally, there is a critical need to identify biomarkers reflecting underlying neuropathological processes that predict clinical/behavioral outcomes in youth. We aimed to identify such biomarkers in youth with behavioral and emotional dysregulation in the Longitudinal Assessment of Manic Symptoms (LAMS) study. We examined neuroimaging measures of function and white matter in the whole ...

In this paper, an upper bound approach is used to determine the maximum power available to tidal stream turbines placed at five sites along the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. A depth-averaged hydrodynamic model of the Malacca Strait is built and validated against field measurements. Actuator disc theory is then used to introduce rows of tidal stream turbines as line sinks of momentum and to determine the maximum time-averaged power available to rows of both moderately sized and very large turbines, ...

Lei Chen, Paul A. J. Bonar, Christopher Vogel, Thomas A. A. Adcock,

Maximising the performance of a tidal turbine array requires the turbine resistance to be 'tuned' for a given channel and turbine arrangement. In many cases, tuning the turbines to produce the maximum power coefficient presents too great a resistance to the incoming flow and results in a lower power output. Recent studies have shown that, as compared to using a fixed tuning, considerably more power can be produced by varying the turbine resistance over the tidal cycle. To our knowledge, however, ...
