We measured the relations between tubular perfusion rate and the rate of net NaCl transport in medullary thick ascending limbs of Henle (mTALH) either in the presence or absence of ADH. These data, together with the known Na+, Cl-, and water permeability characteristics of the mTALH, were used to calculate tau NaCl (mol . s-1 . cm-2), the rate of conservative Cl- transport from lumen through cells to interspaces; and CNaCl, the effective NaCl concentration in lateral intercellular spaces. The experimental ...

The experimental data indicate that PGE2 reduced the ADH-dependent values of net Cl- absorption (JnetCl, eq cm-2 s-1) and Ve (mV) in a dose-dependent manner; that increasing ...

Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) inhibits the ADH-stimulated components of the lumen-positive transepithelial voltage (Ve) and of net chloride absorption (JnetCl) in the isolated microperfused mouse medullary thick ascending limb of Henle (mTALH), presumably by interfering with the ADH-dependent intracellular accumulation of cAMP. These experiments examined the interactions of PGE2 with two nonhormonal stimulators of adenylate cyclase--cholera toxin and forskolin--in an attempt to evaluate the means by which ...

The goal of this study was to synthesize skin substitutes that blend native extracellular matrix (ECM) molecules with synthetic polymers which have favorable mechanical properties. To this end, scaffolds were electrospun from collagen I (col) and poly(ɛ-caprolactone) (PCL), and then pores were introduced mechanically to promote fibroblast infiltration, and subsequent filling of the pores with ECM. A 70:30 col/PCL ratio was determined to provide optimal support for dermal fibroblast growth, and a pore ...

Research has shown that depression increases the likelihood that otherwise healthy people will develop ischemic heart disease (IHD) and worsens the prognosis of patients who already have IHD. Moreover, concerns about safety (e.g., cardiac side effects, drug-drug interactions) have caused physicians to be hesitant about using antidepressant agents in patients with IHD. This article is based on a recent roundtable of experts who met to discuss risk, diagnosis, and treatment options for depression in ...
