Patients infected with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) can experience life-threatening respiratory distress, blood pressure dysregulation, and thrombosis. This is thought to be associated with an impaired activity of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), which is the main entry receptor of SARS-CoV-2 and which also tightly regulates blood pressure by converting the vasoconstrictive peptide angiotensin II (AngII) to a vasopressor peptide. Here, we show that a significant ...

Potent and durable vaccine responses will be required for control of malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum (Pf). RTS,S/AS01 is the first, and to date, the only vaccine that has demonstrated significant reduction of clinical and severe malaria in endemic cohorts in Phase 3 trials. Although the vaccine is protective, efficacy declines over time with kinetics paralleling the decline in antibody responses to the Pf circumsporozoite protein (PfCSP). Although most attention has focused on antibodies to ...

Abstract An important goal of environmental health research is to assess the risk posed by mixtures of environmental exposures. Two popular classes of models for mixtures analyses are response‐surface methods and exposure‐index methods. Response‐surface methods estimate high‐dimensional surfaces and are thus highly flexible but difficult to interpret. In contrast, exposure‐index methods decompose coefficients from a linear model into an overall mixture effect and individual index weights; these ...

Summary Previous research demonstrates that domain experts, like ordinary participant populations, are vulnerable to decision bias. Here, we examine susceptibility to bias amongst expert field scientists. Field scientists operate in less predictable environments than other experts, and feedback on the consequences of their decisions is often unclear or delayed. Thus, field scientists are a population where the findings of scientific research may be particularly vulnerable to bias. In this study, ...

Fine particles of ash emitted during volcanic eruptions may sporadically influence cloud properties on a regional or global scale as well as influencing the dynamics of volcanic clouds and the subsequent dispersion of volcanic aerosol and gases. It has been shown that volcanic ash can trigger ice nucleation, but ash from relatively few volcanoes has been studied for its ice nucleating ability. In this study we quantify the efficiency with which ash from the Soufriere Hills volcano on Montserrat ...

While agonist replacement therapies are effective for managing opioid dependence, community treatment programs are increasingly choosing detoxification. Unfortunately, success rates for opioid detoxification are very low, in part, due to physical and psychological symptoms associated with opioid withdrawal. Few behavior therapies specifically address the distressing experiences specific to opioid withdrawal. A novel behavioral treatment, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), works from the premise ...

Human development occurs in a social environment in which learning is tightly coupled to the behavior of other supportive humans. One aspect of this coupling may occur through motor contagion, in which observing the actions of other people is associated with the activation of related motor representations. In order to explore the overlap between action observation and action execution in early childhood, a novel task was developed in which 4-year-old children were instructed to move a stylus on ...

The genus Oncorhynchus includes Pacific salmon and trout (anadromous and land-locked) species of the western United States and Mexico. All species and subspecies in this group are threatened, endangered, sensitive, or species of conservation concern in portions of their native ranges. To examine the relationships of the species within Oncorhynchus we sequenced a 768 bp fragment of the protein-encoding ND4 mtDNA region. We included all six recognized subspecies of O. clarki (cutthroat trout), O. gilae ...

We present a method for creating a hard mask for the dry etching of microphotonic structures and devices. We demonstrate that spin-on glass [hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSQ)] has sufficient dry etch resistance to allow the creation of high-quality, deeply etched photonic crystals. Furthermore, HSQ is a more favorable hard mask for the creation of active devices than plasma-enhanced chemical-vapor deposition (PECVD) silica, as less damage is incurred. It is also an economic and convenient replacement for ...

We investigate etching conditions for photonic crystals (PhCs) in InGaAsP/InP and AlGaAs/GaAs using a new regime of CAIBE operation. We show that the beam voltage-current ratio is critical in obtaining high material/mask selectivity. For one-dimensional PhCs, i.e., air slots, selectivities of 22:1 and 50:1 were achieved in InP and GaAs, respectively, using a very high beam voltage (about 1500 V) and a low beam current (about 10 mA). Etched features were observed to be very smooth, i.e., edge roughness ...

The major limitations of precise evaluation of retinal structures in present clinical situations are the lack of standardization, the inherent subjectivity involved in the interpretation of retinal images, and intra- as well as interobserver variability. While evaluating optic disc deformation in glaucoma, these limitations could be overcome by using advanced digital image analysis techniques to generate precise metrics; from stereo optic disc image pairs. The time course of excretion of acetaminophen and its metabolites in urine was determined in eight healthy adults (seven men and one woman) who ingested 1 gm of the drug and collected timed urine samples for 24 hours. The mean time of peak excretion rate was 1.3 to 3.7 hours for acetaminophen, its glucuronide, sulfate, cysteine, mercapturate, and methoxy metabolites but 13.5 hours for methylthioacetaminophen. The mean half-life of acetaminophen was 3.1 hours and the mean half-life of the metabolites ...
