Abstract Forests are a substantial terrestrial carbon sink, but anthropogenic changes in land use and climate have considerably reduced the scale of this system 1 . Remote-sensing estimates to quantify carbon losses from global forests 2–5 are characterized by considerable uncertainty and we lack a comprehensive ground-sourced evaluation to benchmark these estimates. Here we combine several ground-sourced 6 and satellite-derived approaches 2,7,8 to evaluate the scale of the global forest carbon potential ...

We describe an analysis strategy to obtain ultrasonography-matched axial dimensions of small animal eyes using the LenStar biometer. The LenStar optical low-coherence reflectometer is an attractive device for animal research due to its high precision, non-invasiveness, and the ability to measure the axial dimensions of cornea, anterior chamber, lens, vitreous chamber, and axial length. However, this optical biometer was designed for clinical applications in human eyes and its internal analysis provides ...

We report the synthesis of two new selenophene-containing ladder-type monomers, cyclopentadiselenophene (CPDS) and indacenodiselenophene (IDSe), via a 2-fold and 4-fold Pd-catalyzed coupling with a 1,1-diborylmethane derivative. Copolymers with benzothiadiazole were prepared in high yield by Suzuki polymerization to afford materials which exhibited excellent solubility in a range of nonchlorinated solvents. The CPDS copolymer exhibited a band gap of just 1.18 eV, which is among the lowest reported ...

It is known from animal experiments that the regulation of REM and Non-REM sleep is governed by cholinergic and serotonergic/adrenergic neurons in the brain stem. Cholinergic neurons in the gigantocellular field of the tegmentum seem to be responsible for the triggering and maintenance of REM sleep. These findings are of special interest for interpreting abnormalities of REM sleep in depression. Psychiatric sleep research in the last two decades has demonstrated that an early onset of REM sleep ...

ASCOT (A Severity Characterization of Trauma) is a physiologic and anatomic characterization of injury severity which combines emergency department admission values of Glasgow Coma Scale, systolic blood pressure, respiratory rate, patient age, and AIS-85 anatomic injury scores in a way that obviates ISS shortcomings. ASCOT values are related to survival probability using the logistic function and regression weights reaffirm the importance of head injury and coma to the prediction of patient outcome. ...

A three-valued description of anatomic injury is presented. Anatomic profile (AP) components A, B, and C summarize serious injuries ( > AIS 2) to the head/ brain or spinal cord; to the thorax or front of the neck; and all remaining serious injuries. Relationships between AP components and survival rate reaffirm the seriousness of head injury. Logistic function models relating AP components and the Injury Severity Score (ISS) to survival probability were based on 20,946 Major Trauma Outcome Study (MTOS) ...

The Trauma Score (TS) has been revised. The revision includes Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), systolic blood pressure (SBP), and respiratory rate (RR) and excludes capillary refill and respiratory expansion, which were difficult to assess in the field. Two versions of the revised score have been developed, one for triage (T-RTS) and another for use in outcome evaluations and to control for injury severity (RTS). T-RTS, the sum of coded values of GCS, SBP, and RR, demonstrated increased sensitivity and some ...

We present the design and performance of a polarized resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSoXS) station for soft matter characterization built by the national institute of standards and technology at the national synchrotron light source-II (NSLS-II). The RSoXS station is located within the spectroscopy soft and tender beamline suite at NSLS-II located in Brookhaven national laboratory, New York. Numerous elements of the RSoXS station were designed for optimal performance for measurements on soft matter ...

48-hour rapid cycling is a very rare form of bipolar disorder, characterized by regular periodic changes of mood from one day to the other. We report on a patient who suffered from a 48-hour rapid cycling without a history of bipolar disorder before the abrupt onset of his rapid mood cycles. We present polysomnographic and neuroendocrine findings and the clinical course based on daily self-ratings of mood. Treatment with lithium carbonate effectively reduced the amplitude of the mood cycles. With ...
