Many therapeutic approaches to cancer affect the tumour vasculature, either indirectly or as a direct target. Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) has become an important means of investigating this action, both pre-clinically and in early stage clinical trials. For such trials, it is essential that the measurement process (i.e. image acquisition and analysis) can be performed effectively and with consistency among contributing centres. As the technique continues to develop ...

The application of morphometric techniques based on Strahler orders to the study of pulmonary angiograms is described. When the pulmonary arterial tree is ordered by Strahler9s method, peripheral branches have the lowest orders and the main pulmonary artery the highest order. The mean diameter of vessels in each order can then be determined. Pulmonary angiograms were obtained from 16 patients, 10 of whom had chronic obstructive lung disease (COLD), the other six having normal angiograms. Six orders ...

Measurements of equation of state (EOS) points on the principal Hugoniots of Cu, Au, Pb and the plastics Parylene-C and brominated CH at multimegabar pressures have been made using the 1 TW HELEN laser at AWE. The aim was 1% accuracy in shock velocity measurement (3%–4% in pressure) in order to compare with data from gas-gun and nuclear underground test experiments and the theoretical EOS’s based on, or supported by, these data. Experiments comprised a hohlraum heated by two 500 J, 0.53 μm wavelength, ...

Osteocytes play an integral role in bone by sensing mechanical stimuli and releasing signaling factors that direct bone formation. The importance of osteocytes in mechanotransduction suggests that regions of bone tissue with greater osteocyte populations are more responsive to mechanical stimuli. To determine the effects of osteocyte population on bone functional adaptation we applied mechanical loads to the 8th caudal vertebra of skeletally mature female Sprague Dawley rats (6 months of age, n = 8 ...

The AWE HELEN laser is being used to measure high-pressure Hugoniot data by the impedance match method. Indirect drive is used to generate pressures of up to 10 Mbar in the aluminum reference material. We are aiming to measure shock velocities in our targets to ± 1 %, leading to errors in pressure and particle velocity of the order of ±2%. This requires improvements in target fabrication and characterization, streak camera calibration and data analysis, coupled with investigations into shock planarity ...

Objective The aim of this study was to examine cross‐sectional associations between objectively measured sedentary time and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)‐assessed adiposity in a population at high risk for type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and to determine whether associations are modified by the recommended levels of moderate‐to‐vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Methods Sedentary time and MVPA were measured objectively by using accelerometers. Linear regression models examined the association of sedentary ...
