Abstract This review includes a brief discussion, from the perspective of the pediatric cardiologist, of the rationale for creation and maintenance of multi-institutional databases of outcomes of the treatment of patients with congenital and paediatric cardiac disease, together with a history of the evolution of such databases, and a description of the current state of the art. A number of projects designed to have broad-based impact are currently in the design phase, or have already been implemented. ...

The monocarboxylate transporters 1 and 4 are expressed in brain as well as in skeletal muscle and play important roles in the energy metabolism of both tissues. In brain, monocarboxylate transporter 1 occurs in astrocytes, ependymocytes, and endothelial cells while monocarboxylate transporter 4 appears to be restricted to astrocytes. In muscle, monocarboxylate transporter 1 is enriched in oxidative muscle fibers whereas monocarboxylate transporter 4 is expressed in all fibers, with the lowest levels ...

The carbon 1s ionization energies for all of the carbon atoms in 10 fluorine-substituted benzene molecules have been measured by high-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy. A total of 30 ionization energies can be accurately described by an additivity model with four parameters that describe the effect of a fluorine that is ipso, ortho, meta, or para to the site of ionization. A similar additivity relationship describes the enthalpies of protonation. The additivity parameters reflect the role of ...

Cardiac metabolism becomes more dependent on carbohydrates in congestive heart failure (CHF), and lactate may be used as an important respiratory substrate. Monocarboxylate transporter 1 (MCT1) promotes cotransport of lactate and protons into and out of heart cells and conceivably flux of lactate between cells, because it is abundantly present in the intercalated disk.Six weeks after induction of myocardial infarction (MI) in Wistar rats, left ventricular end-diastolic pressures were >15 mm Hg, signifying ...

A measure of the strength of association between two categorical variables (location of initial marking and location of recapture) is proposed as an index of the extent of fish movement in streams. Confidence intervals and tests of significance for interpretation of the strength of association are presented, along with their development and theoretical justification. The proposed methodology is applied to fish movement data collected before and after pollution-abatement periods in a river in northern ...

Azoarcus sp. strain BH72 is an aerobic diazotrophic bacterium that was originally found as an endophyte in Kallar grass. Anticipating that these bacteria are exposed to dissolved O2 concentrations (DOCs) in the nanomolar range during their life cycle, we studied the impact of increasing O2 deprivation on N2 fixation and respiration. Bacteria were grown in batch cultures, where they shifted into conditions of low pO2 upon depletion of O2 by respiration. During incubation, specific rates of respiration ( ...

Percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation using a stent-based bioprosthetic valve provides an alternative to surgery in select patients. Systemic infections in Melody valve-implanted patients with and without identified valve involvement have been reported, yet the incidence is unknown, and risk factors remain unidentified.Between 2007 and 2012, a total of 147 consecutive patients with congenital heart disease underwent Melody percutaneous pulmonary valve implantation at our institution. Abstract The stimulus to create this document was the recognition that ionizing radiation‐guided cardiovascular procedures are being performed with increasing frequency, leading to greater patient radiation exposure and, potentially, to greater exposure for clinical personnel. Although the clinical benefit of these procedures is substantial, there is concern about the implications of medical radiation exposure. The American College of Cardiology leadership concluded that it is important to provide ...

This early feasibility study was designed to obtain in vivo data to confirm assumptions on device loading conditions of the Medtronic Harmony transcatheter pulmonary valve (TPV). Secondary objectives included procedural feasibility, safety, and valve performance. The Harmony TPV was developed for nonsurgical pulmonary valve replacement in non-right ventricle-pulmonary artery conduit patients. The Native Outflow Tract TPV Research Clinical Study was the first study approved under the Food and Drug ...

Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) positron emission tomography/computerised tomography (PET/CT) is increasingly being utilised in the diagnostic pathway for prostate cancer (PCa). Image-based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is widely used to predict intracranial aneurysm wall shear stress (WSS), particularly with the goal of improving rupture risk assessment. Nevertheless, concern has been expressed over the variability of predicted WSS and inconsistent associations with rupture. Previous challenges, and studies from individual groups, have focused on individual aspects of the image-based CFD pipeline. The aim of this Challenge was to quantify the total variability of the ...
