Examines the political consequences inherent in the genre of the âwell-made novelâ. Argues that âa reading of The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith may tell us, not only what Keneallyâs novel explicitly states, that there is a limit to understanding white Australians can have of aboriginal culture, but also why Keneally was forced by the limits of the novel form itself to draw this lesson in politically conservative termsâ (291).

âAcknowledges Keneallyâs seeming contradiction of being both a popular and serious novelist. Yet argues that in spite of the popular elements in his work, Keneally shows a keen awareness of the individualâs precarious position in âthe scheme of things,â and directs each novel toward a search for surety amid uncertainties, for comprehension of the inexplicable, for an affirmation of decency and integrityâ (Annotation in R. Ross, Australian Literary Criticism - 1945-1988, 241).
