The Avengers, Earth's mightiest heroes of the Marvel comics universe, saved our planet from an army of hostile aliens and the Norse god of mischief Loki in 2012's blockbuster hit, Marvel's The Avengers. We consider here the previously underappreciated role that chemistry and materials science played in keeping Earth safe from this extraterrestial invasion.
