By the use of light microscopic (LM) immunohistochemistry the distribution of tachykinin (TK)-, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)- and neuropeptide Y (NPY)-like immunoreactivity in nerves supplying the mammalian (rat, mouse, guinea-pig, cat) thymus gland has been determined. There were no interspecies variations. Fibres staining for TK and CGRP completely overlapped indicating coexistence. They were present in the capsule, in interlobular septa and in the corticomedullary boundary and occurred in ...

By the use of light microscopic (LM) immunohistochemistry, the presence of peptides and of dopamine β-hydroxylase (DBH) in nerves supplying mammalian (guinea pig, rat, cat, pig, mouse, human) lymph nodes were examined. In all species, lymph nodes of various somatic and visceral regions were found to contain nerve fibers which stained for neuropeptide Y (NPY), vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), peptide histidine isoleucine (PHI), substance P (SP), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) or DBH, SP-and ...

Growth-associated protein-43, an established marker of neuronal plasticity during development and in injury, was used to characterize innervation in the normal human pancreas and changes in chronic alcohol-induced pancreatitis by using light microscopic immunocytochemistry and computer-assisted image analysis. Immunostaining for the pan-neuronal marker protein gene-product 9.5 served as a reference for the characterization of total innervation in both groups. In normal human pancreas, strong protein ...

This study tested the usefulness of Schwann cells in the repair of a severed nerve with a biosynthetic bridge or guide. Reinforced collagen nerve guides were used to bridge an 18 mm gap in the sciatic nerve of 21 young adult rats. The animals were divided into three groups and the guides were filled with: (i) more than 0.5 x 10(6) cultured syngeneic adult Schwann cells (group L, n = 12); (ii) less than 0.5 x 10(6) Schwann cells (Group S, n = 6); and (iii) phosphate buffered saline (control, n = 3). Schwann ...

Summary Background 15–25% of appendices removed from patients with suspected appendicitis appear normal on histological examination. The cause of pain in such patients is unknown. Since the content of neuropeptides seems to be altered in chronic inflammation, we investigated possible changes in peptidergic innervation for substance P (SP), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), and growth-associated protein-43 (GAP-43). Methods Appendices classified as showing acute appendicitis, non-acute appendicitis (clinical ...

We have investigated the responsiveness of adult guinea pig Schwann cells to a range of neuroligands, using ratiometric calcium imaging. The majority of cells responded to ATP (90 ± 4%), adrenaline (57 ± 5%), and noradrenaline (61 ± 5%), as well as glutamate (60 ± 5%). The number of cells responding to glutamate increased significantly (90 ± 4%; p < 0.01) when the cells were grown in excitatory amino acid (EAA) free medium, indicating EAA-induced downregulation. Only a small number of cells (9 ± 2%) responded to acetylcholine. ...

Abstract Despite the pivotal clinical significance of the human anal canal, little is known about its total and specific innervation. This study assessed the comparative distribution and histotopology of nerve fibres immunoreactive for neural markers and a variey of regulatory active neuropeptides in the human anal canal by light microscopic immunohistochemistry. Depending on the epithelial zone and region of the anal canal, the neural elements were differentially immunoreactive for the pan‐neural ...

In this paper, we deal with autoregressive processes with random coefficients. We propose a least‐squares estimator for the fourth‐order moments of both the innovation and disturbance noises and state its consistency. The main theme of the paper is the development of bootstrap procedures for the autoregressive parameter. We show how to obtain approximative residuals for the process even though the standard method for autoregressive processes does not work in this context since one then would obtain ...

RNA plays a central role in many biological processes and is therefore an important target for drug development. In recent years an increasing wealth of structural and functional information about RNA−ligand complexes has been obtained using in vitro selected RNAs (aptamers). However, all those studies focused on structure and changes of the nucleic acid and mostly considered the ligand as a rigid target. To develop a detailed picture of ligand structure and dynamics in RNA−small molecule complexes, ...

Background: Propofol can be measured in exhaled gas. Exhaled and plasma propofol concentrations correlate well, but the relationship with tissue concentrations remains unknown. We thus evaluated the relationship between exhaled, plasma, and various tissue propofol concentrations. Because the drug acts in the brain, we focused on the relationship between exhaled and brain tissue propofol concentrations. METHODS: Thirty-six male Sprague-Dawley rats were anesthetized with propofol, ketamine, and rocuronium ...

Abstract: Direct adsorption of lipoproteins (DALI) is the first lipid apheresis system compatible with whole blood with the advantage of a very simple procedure. A mixture of heparin plus citrate (ACD‐A) is used for the anticoagulation regimen (AR). A clinical, prospective, controlled crossover study was performed to test the safety and efficacy of low‐dose citrate (LDC) anticoagulation in DALI. Five chronic DALI patients suffering from coronary heart disease and hypercholesterolemia underwent 3 DALI ...

Abstract Abstract 2427 Introduction: The introduction of chemo-immunotherapy (R-FC) has led to impressive improvement of response, PFS and remarkably overall survival in CLL. Irrespective of these improvements, the genetic markers remain important predictors of outcome. With increasing intensity of 1st line treatment, the proportion of patients with refractory disease is decreasing. At the same time the selective pressure on tumor cells increases. Relatively little is known about the genetic profile ...

The medico-legal assessment of a subdural haematoma (recent or organized) usually requires some information regarding its cause. Quite often, especially in the absence of a known history of trauma, minor head injuries, which are no longer verifiable, are simply assumed to be the most likely causes. Considering the fact that a subdural haematoma could also be non-traumatic, e.g. in haemorrhagic disorders, cardiac conditions with persistent passive hyperaemia, true inflammatory and degenerative processes ...

Abstract Although NF-κB is known to play a pivotal role in lung cancer, contributing to tumor growth, microenvironmental changes, and metastasis, the epigenetic regulation of NF-κB in tumor context is largely unknown. Here we report that the IKK2/NF-κB signaling pathway modulates metastasis-associated protein 2 (MTA2), a component of the nucleosome remodeling and deacetylase complex (NuRD). In triple transgenic mice, downregulation of IKK2 (Sftpc-cRaf-IKK2DN) in cRaf-induced tumors in alveolar epithelial ...

Recent studies indicate that the abnormal microenvironment of tumors may play a critical role in carcinogenesis, including lung cancer. We comprehensively assessed the number of stromal cells, especially immune/inflammatory cells, in lung cancer and evaluated their infiltration in cancers of different stages, types and metastatic characteristics potential. Immunohistochemical analysis of lung cancer tissue arrays containing normal and lung cancer sections was performed. This analysis was combined ...
