Simultaneous sustained release of cancer vaccines and immunomodulators may effectively trigger durable immune responses and avoid multiple administrations. Here, we established a biodegradable microneedle (bMN) based on a biodegradable copolymer matrix made of polyethylene glycol (PEG) and poly(sulfamethazine ester urethane) (PSMEU). This bMN was applied to the skin and slowly degraded in the epidermis/dermis layers. Then, the complexes composed of a positively charged polymer (DA3), cancer DNA vaccine ( ...

ZnO is known as a wide-bandgap transparent thermoelectric material. Herein, the electronic transport and temperature-dependent thermoelectric properties of transparent Sb-doped ZnO (SZO) films are reported. The sputtered SZO films prepared at the optimum deposition temperature of 673 K show an n-type semiconducting behavior with the highest thermoelectric power factor of 406 μW/mK 2 at 773 K, and a good transmittance ∼82% in the wavelength region of 400–1100 nm. It can well meet the requirements for ...

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) embedded on solid supports are promising catalysts due to their high reactivity, stability and selectivity. Herein, we report a facile, efficient and low-cost strategy to anchor AgNPs on layered double hydroxides (LDH) and hydroxyapatite (Hap). The abundant surface hydroxyl groups of Hap and LDH were exploited to form hydrogen bonds with carboxylate-capped AgNPs by simply mixing the preformed substrates and silver suspensions. Spectroscopic and electron microscopic characterization ...

Salt-affected soil induces detrimental influences on paddy rice (Oryza sativa L.) growth and ameliorating the influences could be done with organic amendments, such as animal manure and biochar. The aims of the current study are: (1) to examine the interactive effects of biochar and cow manure on rice growth and on selected properties of salt-affected soil, and (2) to identify potential mechanisms related to the amendments. Saline-sodic soil was used for a net house experiment with two experimental ...

Scorpion venoms are complex polypeptide mixtures, the ion channel blockers and antimicrobial peptides being the best studied components. The coagulopathic properties of scorpion venoms are poorly studied and the data about substances exhibiting these properties are very limited. During research on the Heterometrus laoticus scorpion venom, we have isolated low-molecular compounds with anticoagulant activity. Determination of their structure has shown that one of them is adenosine, and two others ...

Concerns have risen regarding the environmental sustainability of favourable aquaculture-based products, including Pangasius fillets in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP). This study examines issues stemming from resource consumption in a cradle-to-factory gate life cycle analysis of MAP Pangasius, which includes aquaculture, processing living fish to frozen fillets in Vietnam, oceanic transport and processing frozen fillets to MAP in Belgium (Europe). Analysis was performed at the process level ...

Amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) is a promising material for cadmium removal due to its irregular surface structure. Nevertheless, the preparation of ACP has not been trivial owing to the facile transformation of the meta-stable state of ACP into the crystalline phase of hydroxyapatite (Hap). Herein we report a new preparation, by which ACP can be synthesized at ease through a one-pot synthesis. The utility of citric acid, together with, preformed Fe3O4 renders the formation of ACP/Fe3O4 magnetic ...

Central nervous system (CNS) diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), glioblastoma (GBM), and peripheral nerve injury have been documented as incurable diseases, which lead to serious impacts on human health especially prevalent in the aging population worldwide. Most of the treatment strategies fail due to low efficacy, toxicity, and poor brain penetration. Recently, advancements in nanotechnology have helped alleviate the challenges associated with the application of cell ...

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive deterioration of brain function, initially characterized by cognitive deficits, with loss of recent memory and language ability, impairment of orientation, problem solving, and abstract thinking. While existing drug treatments help reduce the symptoms of AD and improve people's quality of life, they neither slow its progression nor cure it. Currently, targeted drug delivery to the central nervous system (CNS), for therapy of AD, is confined by the challenges ...

Drug delivery to central nervous system (CNS) diseases is very challenging since the presence of the innate blood-brain barrier (BBB) and the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier that impede drug delivery. Among new strategies to overcome these limitations and successfully deliver drugs to the CNS, nanotechnology-based drug delivery platform, offers potential therapeutic approach for the treatment of some common neurological disorders like Alzheimer's disease, frontotemporal dementia, amyotrophic lateral ...

The skin is recognized as a potential target for local and systemic drug delivery and hormone. However, the transdermal route of drug administration seems to be limited by substantial barrier properties of the skin. Recently, delivering hormone via the skin by transdermal patches is a big challenge because of the presence of the stratum corneum that prevents the application of hormone via this route. In order to overcome the limitations, microneedle (MN), consisting of micro-sized needles, are a ...

However, few reports have investigated the relationship between the degree of PD and the treatment response to RA. This study aimed to examine the relationship between the extent of PD and the treatment response to biologics in RA patients using FDG-PET/CT. Methods Sixty RA patients (male, n = 14; female, n = 46; average age, 58.3 years) treated with biologic agents ...

This paper evaluates the impact of geopolitical risk (GPR) on total factor productivity (TFP) and the inflows of foreign direct investment (FDI) for a group of 18 emerging economies between 1985 and 2019. Based on Granger causality panel data tests, we show that the trajectories of these variables cannot be neglected to explain one another. To account for cross-equation influence, we estimate seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) models and uncover a significant and robust negative impact of GPR on TFP ...

Under globalisation, countries all over the world have been impacted differently by both their macroeconomic conditions and other random factors particular to them. As such, governments and policymakers require a comparison of tax systems across different countries and, consequently, a study on the performance of Tax administration (TA) at a cross-country level would be a necessary reference for governments when designing tax policy. This paper seeks to measure the performance of TA across 44 countries, ...
