Abstract Degradable thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) elastomers incorporating poly( D , L ‐lactide‐ co ‐glycolide) (PLGA) were synthesized and characterized. The soft segments consisted of a mixture of poly(butylene adipate) (PBA) and PLGA with PBA/PLGA ratios of 100/0, 75/25, and 50/50 wt %. Two PLGA polyesters were used. BD‐PLGA was initiated from butanediol; whereas BHMBA‐PLGA was initiated from 2,2‐bis‐(hydroxymethyl)butanoic acid. The hard segments consisted of dicyclohexylmethane‐4,4′‐diisocyanate (H ...

Biotechnology has transformed the potential for plants to be a manufacturing source of pharmaceutical compounds. Now, with transgenic and transient expression techniques, virtually any biologic, including vaccines and therapeutics, could be manufactured in plants. However, uncertainty over the regulatory path for such new pharmaceuticals has been a deterrent. Consideration has been given to using alternative regulatory paths, including those for nutraceuticals or cosmetic agents. This review will ...

Andean bear (Tremarctos ornatus) alopecia syndrome (ABAS) commonly affects captive bears, particularly sexually mature females. ABAS is characterized by bilaterally symmetrical predominantly flank alopecia with or without profound pruritus and secondary bacterial and Malassezia infections. There is no effective treatment and severely affected bears have been euthanized. This paper describes the successful management of ABAS in three female Andean bears. Skin biopsies and cytology revealed a mixed ...

Kirti Sehgal, Jennifer Drake, Tim Van Seters, William Kyle Vander Linden,

Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavements (PICP) are a Low Impact Development (LID) technology that reduce the total volume of stormwater discharge and peak flows from urban hardscapes. Over time, particulates accumulate in the PICP joints, decreasing the pavement’s surface infiltration capacity and negatively affecting its overall functionality. Maintenance with two surface treatment technologies, a hand-held power brush and pressure washer-used in combination with vacuum street sweepers were compared ...

ABSTRACT Rapid identification of microorganisms causing bloodstream infections directly from a positive blood culture would decrease the time to directed antimicrobial therapy and greatly improve patient care. Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization–time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) is a fast and reliable method for identifying microorganisms from positive culture. This study evaluates the performance of a novel filtration-based method for processing positive-blood-culture broth ...

John J. Drake, Tim R. Moore,

Problems of acid precipitation in association with industrial activity in areas such as the Great Lakes region are now well‐known (e.g. Hornbeck et al., 1977), and the Canadian Network for Sampling Precipitation (CANSAP) has established monitoring stations across Canada. In communities in northern Canada, however, especially in winter, a considerable amount of SO 2 is liberated locally. It is therefore important to be able to separate local effects from the regional or continental ones, but most CANSAP ...

This study examined the spring, summer and fall water quality performance of three partial-infiltration permeable pavement (PP) systems and a conventional asphalt pavement in Ontario. The study, conducted between 2010 and 2012, compared the water quality of effluent from two Interlocking Permeable Concrete Pavements (AquaPave® and Eco-Optiloc®) and a Hydromedia® Pervious Concrete pavement with runoff from an Asphalt control pavement. The usage of permeable pavements can mitigate the impact of urbanization ...

Computed tomography kidneys, ureter and bladder (CTKUB) is the accepted gold standard investigation for suspected renal colic. Dose considerations are particularly pertinent in the context of detecting urolithiasis given the high risk of disease recurrence, which can necessitate multiple radiological examinations over the lifetime of a stone-former. We performed a systematic review of the literature to see whether there was any evidence that reducing the effective radiation dose of a CTKUB compromised ...

This study, conducted between 2010 and 2012, compares the winter quality of storm water outflows from one pervious concrete and two permeable interlocking concrete pavement systems with runoff from an asphalt control pavement. The permeable pavement systems were designed for partial infiltration with underdrains. During the winter, the pavements were plowed and, occasionally, salted. Analyses are based on samples of permeable pavement effluent and asphalt runoff collected for 19 events over two ...

Jennifer Drake, Andrea Bradford, Tim Van Seters,

The hydrologic performance of three partial-infiltration permeable pavement (PP) systems was evaluated at the Kortright Centre for Conservation in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada over 22 months. Partial-infiltration systems allow some stormwater to infiltrate into native soils and drain excess water by way of underdrains. The native soils at Kortright are composed of clayey silt and silty clay till, with clay content ranging from 7 to 30%. Flow restrictors on the underdrains were adjusted to the smallest ...

Context Duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) is the time from manifestation of the first psychotic symptom to initiation of adequate treatment. It has been postulated that a longer DUP leads to a poorer prognosis. If so, outcome might be improved through earlier detection and treatment. Objectives To establish whether DUP is associated with prognosis and to determine whether any association is explained by confounding with premorbid adjustment.
