Water resources are under unprecedented strain. The combined effects of population growth, climate change, and rural industrialization have led to greater demand for an increasingly scarce resource. Ensuring that communities have adequate access to water—an essential requirement for community health and prosperity—requires finegrained management policies based on real-time in situ data, both environmental and hydrological. To address this requirement at the state level, we have developed the South ...

Private enforcement, or litigation, has played a historic role in protecting public health in the United States. Litigation is often employed as a means to protect public health when government regulation is absent or ineffectual. Litigation has been successfully employed to control both asbestos and tobacco and is poised for success in combating the obesity epidemic. Litigation is effective because it makes public industry practices and increases industry self-policing. Litigation related to obesity ...

There is an accumulating body of evidence linking estrogen receptor-alpha (ER-alpha) gene polymorphisms with variation in cardiovascular risk factors or disease. The ER-alpha IVS1-397 T/C (PvuII), IVS1-351 A/C (XbaI) and the promoter region TA repeat polymorphisms have received the most attention. If ER-alpha genetic variants identify women at high risk for cardiovascular events, this information could be used to improve clinical decisions regarding the use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). High resolution ultrasonography was used to establish the presence of polycystic ovaries (PCO) in 50 women with symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome and in 17 women with congenital adrenal hyperplasia. One hundred and thirty-seven post-menarcheal, premenopausal female members of the families of these patients were scanned to assess the heredity of the condition. Familial PCO was found in 56 of the 61 pedigrees (92%) in which sufficient members were available for study. The frequency of PCO in the ...

Servitization is now widely recognized as the process of creating value by adding services to products. Since this term was first coined in the late 1980s, it has been studied by a range of authors seeking to understand the wider implications of service-led competitive strategies in manufacturing. However, yet to be explored are the detailed practices and processes needed to deliver integrated products and services. Therefore, the purposes of the present paper are to illustrate the form of a real- ...

Almost all manufacturers offer services, but some use these as the basis for their competitive strategy. This is a growing area of interest among practitioners, policy makers, and academics, yet little is known about the adoption of servitization by UK manufacturers. In this paper a survey is presented that has been used to explore the extent, motivations, challenges, and successes of servitization within the business-to-business sector. The findings indicate, for example, that many manufacturers ...
