Timothy A. Judge, Ryan Klinger, Lauren Simon,

The present study linked general mental ability (GMA) to extrinsic career success using a multilevel framework that included time and 3 possible time-based mediators of the GMA-career success relationship. Results, based on a large national sample, revealed that over a 28-year period, GMA affected growth in 2 indicators of extrinsic career success (income and occupational prestige), such that the careers of high-GMA individuals ascended more steeply over time than those of low-GMA individuals. Catherine A. Roster, Joseph R. Ferrari,

The job demands-control model (JDC) postulates that an increased control over work resources mitigates or "buffers" the positive association between job stressors and strainers. However, the inconclusive validation of the buffering hypothesis across multiple studies suggests the need for fresh approaches, both conceptual and methodological. We integrated aspects of the JDC framework and time management process models to construct a model that tested both the direct and indirect effects of the perceived ...

Caryn Gorden,

This article focuses on the intergenerational transmission of Holocaust trauma to the second generation and the notion of unconscious identification as a significant mechanism in the transmission of these traumas. Through extended clinical material, I will illustrate the critical alterations to one's sense of time, agency, and personal narrative when, as a second-generation survivor, one does not accept and mourn the traumatic losses of the previous generation. The article details the theoretical ...

Mariëtte Berndsen, J. van der Pligt,

The present research examines the role of optimism on time preferences for both losses and gains. It is argued that optimism has asymmetric effects on time preferences for gains versus losses: one reason why decision makers prefer immediate gains is because they are optimistic that these gains will be followed by additional gains in future. In contrast, decision makers prefer to delay losses because they are optimistic that losses are avoidable in the future. Optimism about outcomes affects time ...

We propose and explore the applicability of file timestamps as a steganographic channel. We identify an information gap between storage and usage of timestamps in modern operating systems that use high-precision timers. Building on this, we describe a layered design of a steganographic system that offers stealthiness, robustness, and wide applicability. The proposed design is evaluated through theoretical, evidence-based, and experimental analysis for the case of NTFS using datasets comprising millions ...

Martin Groß, Mihail Chiru,

Abstract The emphasis national parties put on European Union (EU) issues in their manifestos varies to a great extent between countries. A systematic explanation of this variation is, however, still lacking. We address this gap by exploring the effect of the temporal proximity between national and European Parliament (EP) elections within the national electoral cycle on national parties’ EU issue emphasis. Multilevel mixed-effects Tobit regressions on a sample of 956 manifestos, produced by 340 parties ...

Elínborg Bárðardóttir,

The Icelandic College of Family Physicians (FIH) celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. In those 30 years family medicine in Iceland has grown and matured and established itself. But even if we believe that family medicine is and should be firmly established as the central discipline of medicine in our society the majority of physicians in Iceland are trained as specialists in various specialities other than family medicine.
