A cost-effective chopper layout for the chopper cascade of MIRACLES, the time-of-flight backscattering spectrometer of the European Spallation Source is described. The main driving force is the capability to display a versatile and flexible selection of configuration modes, taking advantage of the long ESS pulse and tailoring the instrument resolution ad hoc, and covering a broad range of observation times from 10 ps to the ns. A key element for the design here presented is the feasibility to reach an energy resolution contribution from the incident neutron beam of ∼1.2 μeV, while keeping the same performance of MIRACLES conceptual design. The present optimized concept results in ...

Summary MIRACLE is a medical information system designed to validate and analyse time-oriented data. The chronological patient database is composed of user-defined repeating groups stored in numerically coded character records of variable length. A flexible query language gives access to semantic validation, cross-sectional and mixed-longitudinal analysis. The main application is at present a large hospital-based tumor register.

... we present the conceptual design of the backscattering time-of-flight spectrometer MIRACLES approved for construction at the long-pulse European Spallation Source (ESS). MIRACLES’s unparalleled combination of variable resolution, high flux, extended energy, and momentum transfer (0.2–6 Å−1) ranges will open new avenues for neutron backscattering spectroscopy. Its remarkable flexibility can be attributed to 3 key elements: the long-pulse time structure and low repetition rate of the ESS ...
