Tiphia sternocarinata Allen and Jaynes is newly discovered in Korea. This species is easily distinguished by the almost straight second intercubital vein and the presence of a median longitudinal carina in anterior constricted area of metasomal sternum I. A checklist of the 21 valid species of Korean tiphiid wasps is also provided.

The tiphiid wasp fauna of Madagascar consists of 28 endemic species, including 12 species of Anthobosca (Anthoboscinae), nine species of Methocha (Methochinae), two species of Tiphia (Tiphiinae) and in the Myzininae three species of Meria, eight species of Mesa and two species of Myzinella. Seven species of Methocha, arcuata, depressa, flavipalpus, impunctata, nasiformis, robusta and strigosa, and one species of Myzinella, minima, are described as new. All of the genera are shared with mainland Africa.

Subsequent to 1933 liberations were made of Tiphia castaneaevora Parker, T. popilliavora Rohwer, T. stemata Parker and T. vernalis Rohwer ...

It is my intention to publish under this general title a series of papers on the classification of the wasps of this family. The present paper presents a review of the genotypes of the Myzinine genera and a tentative key to the genera of the world. Miss Grace Sandhouse of the U. S. National Museum and Mr. V. S. L. Pate and Mr. John G. Franclemont of Cornell University, have been kind enough to consult several references not available to me at the time this was written.

Abstract The biology of Hemithynnus hyalinatus Westwood is described. The wasps usually have a one‐year life cycle in contrast to the two‐year life cycle of their hosts. Adults of the wasps H. hyalinatus and Guerinus shuckardi Guérin emerge from their cocoons at different times and in the field can attack different generations of the same host species. Better control of one scarabaeid species might therefore be achieved by the use of several species of Thynninae. Female H. hyalinatus oviposit once ...

Abstract The behaviour of Hemithynnus hyalinatus Westwood, a wasp parasite of scarabaeid larvae, was studied in the field on the northern tablelands of New South Wales and in the laboratory. The wingless females are fed by the males at the breeding area during mating. The distance between the breeding area and the feeding area of the males is less than 800 m. H. hyalinatus parasitizes the third‐instar larvae and pupae of almost all the larger scarabaeid species in the study area. The behaviour of ...

Abstract Hemithynmus, hyalinatus Westwood, a wasp parasite of scarabaeid larvae in the New England Tablelands area, is associated with persistent populations of its potential host species which have a discontinuous distribution in the area. Of the larger insects in the soil sampled at one field site from 1964–1968, 77% were Scarabaeidae, 15% Thynninae, 7% predators and 1% hyperparasites. Wasp mortality in the field was only measured for stages in the cocoon; of these 5% were killed by a rhipiphorid ...

An examination of prey-orienting behaviour of Methocha stygia has demonstrated that adult females regularly transport prey (Cicindela larvae) when they are removed from their burrows. On a single occasion a wasp was also observed to utilize a naturally occurring depression in the soil as a nest site, instead of depending on the prey's own burrow. This flexibility in response might be a carryover of the behaviour that surely existed in the ancestors of the methochine wasps, insects which were close ...

Abstract The Myzininae are newly recorded from Australia. Austromyzinum gen. n. is erected for Rhytidogaster pyxidatus Turner and Rhagigaster dissociatus Turner, both of which are redescribed, and A. transversum sp. n. All species are known from males only. Females of an unidentified species are placed tentatively in Austromyzinum. Cleftomyzinum gen. n. is erected for C. yokinense sp. n. A key to males is provided.

Abstract The 2 known species of Acanthothynnus Turner are redescribed and 4 new species described: A. ater, A. carinatus, A. clypeatus and A. luteus. The females of only 3 species, A. clementi (Turner), A. clypeatus and A. sannae (Turner) are known and are described or redescribed. A key to species is given.

Females of two species of thynnine wasps, Megalothynnus klugii and Macrothynnus sp., attract mates while perched upright on vegetation close to the ground. When given an experimental choice between two females of different sizes, males of M. klugii carry off and copulate with the larger female significantly more often than they do the smaller one. No such preference was exhibited by males of Macrothynnus sp. Females of both species resist being removed from their calling perches and large males ...
