When did Livy write his history? How many books had it, and what did the lost ones cover? Such answers as can be given to these questions come almost entirely from the one extant summary, the Periochae . The manuscripts of the Periochae disagree, however, on a matter of considerable interest: out of a hundred or so, only three, supported by a lost fourth, have been cited as adding to the title Ex libro CXXI the subtitle qui editus post excessum Augusti dicitur . When the latest editor, P. Jal in the ...

Abstract The use of mild conditions to perform the entrapment of biomolecules in polymeric matrices is a crucial step in a broad range of applications as biosensors, biocarrier‐mediated facilitated transport membranes, and drug‐controlled release devices. In this study, we investigated the crosslinking of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) by glutaraldehyde in the absence of an acid catalyst and organic solvents to improve the water resistance of the hydrophilic biocompatible polymer. Glutaraldehyde was chosen ...

Carbazole 1,9a-dioxygenase (CarA), the first enzyme in the carbazole degradation pathway used by Pseudomonas sp., was expressed in E. coli under different conditions defined by experimental design. This enzyme depends on the coexistence of three components containing [2Fe–2S] clusters: CarAa, CarAc, and CarAd. The catalytic site is present in CarAa. The genes corresponding to components of carbazole 1,9a-dioxygenase from P. stutzeri were cloned and expressed by salt induction in E. coli BL21-SI (a ...

Membrane separation processes have been extensively used for some important industrial separations, substituting traditional methods. However, some applications require the development of new membranes. In this work, we discuss recent progress achieved in this field, focusing on gas and liquid separation using facilitated transport membranes. The advantages of using a carrier species either in a liquid membrane or fixed in a polymer matrix to enhance both the flux and the selectivity of the transport ...

The proportion of nitrogenated compounds such as carbazole in heavy fractions of crude oil is higher in Brazil than in other parts of the world. The degradation of this compound by microorganisms has already been described for bacteria such as Pseudomonas stutzeri ATCC 31258. Assays were undertaken to assess the influence of different carbazole concentrations on cell growth, carbazole degradation and the formation of anthranilic acid (an intermediate in the carbazole degradation pathway). The results ...

In this work, the lipase from Pyrococcus furiosus encoded by ORF PF2001 was expressed with a fusion protein (thioredoxin) in Escherichia coli. The purified enzymes with the thioredoxin tag (TRX-PF2001Δ60) and without the thioredoxin tag (PF2001Δ60) were characterized, and various influences of Triton X-100 were determined. The optimal temperature for both enzymes was 80°C. Although the thioredoxin presence did not influence the optimum temperature, the TRX-PF2001Δ60 presented specific activity twice ...

In this work soy and wheat bran were employed as raw materials for the production of pectinases by Aspergillus niger through solid-state fermentation. Several fermentation and recovery parameters were studied. The kinetics of enzyme synthesis was investigated in the range from 13 to 96 h with moisture contents varying from 25% to 70% (w/w). A medium moisture content of 40% and a fermentation time of 22 h were selected, as these conditions resulted in high pectolytic activity and enhanced polygalacturonase ...

Fertilizers contain essential nutrients for agricultural growth and development. However, most nitrogen fertilizers are substances with high solubility of ions and are very susceptible to leaching and volatilization. To minimize these losses, an alternative is the creation of a physical barrier around granules. One way is to coat granules with polymers. In the present work urea granules were coated with polyhydroxybutyrate and ethyl cellulose in various conditions in the presence of emulsifiers. ...

RNA polymerase III (Pol III) synthesizes tRNAs and other small noncoding RNAs to regulate protein synthesis. Dysregulation of Pol III transcription has been linked to cancer, and germline mutations in genes encoding Pol III subunits or tRNA processing factors cause neurogenetic disorders in humans, such as hypomyelinating leukodystrophies and pontocerebellar hypoplasia. Here we describe an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by cerebellar hypoplasia and intellectual disability, as well as ...

A hybrid neural modelling procedure which enables the implementation of an adaptive control scheme for the optimization of fed-batch fermentations is presented. Simulations for the processes of cell mass production and ethanol fermentation by Sacharomyces cerevisae show that, in the presence of modelling errors, the adaptive control leads to nearly optimal results, while open-loop control leads to bad results. Experimental studies show that, for the process of ethanol fermentation by Zymomonas mobilis, ...

In this work a hybrid neural modelling methodology, which combines mass balance equations with functional link networks (FLNs), used to represent kinetic rates, is developed for bioprocesses. The simple structure of the FLNs allows the easy and rapid estimation of network weights and, consequently, the use of the hybrid model in an adaptive form. As the proposed model is able to adjust to kinetic and environmental changes, it is suitable for use in the development of optimization strategies for fed- ...
