新潟県十日町市の室野泥火山において,2014年11月22日の長野県神城断層地震の発生直後,メタン,二酸化炭素,エタン,プロパンの溶存濃度が地震発生前に比べて増加していたのが確認された.メタンとエタンの炭素同位体比の高い値とC1/(C2+C3)比から,メタンは地震の前後とも有機物の熱分解起源であり,地下深部に由来すると判断される.一方,地震直後にエタンの炭素同位体比が低下することから,地震直後には熟成度のより低い石油根源岩から生成したエタンの供給量が増加した可能性がある.このように,地震による体積歪み変化は地下深部からのガスの供給量の増加やガスの供給源の変化をもたらした.この地震における室野泥火山の理論歪み値は687×10-8ストレインと求められ,同様の規模の体積歪変化を引き起こす地震に頻繁に遭遇していることから,室野泥火山は地震と泥火山の関係を研究する上で重要なフィールドといえる.

信濃川活褶曲地帯最南部に位置する十日町盆地を対象に,空中写真判読と詳細な地形・地質調査から,活褶曲と活断層の関係と褶曲運動の運動様式について考察した.当盆地に広がる約50万年前以降に形成された河成段丘群には,基盤である鮮新世から更新世にかけて堆積した魚沼層群の東翼より西翼が急傾斜という,非対称な向斜構造と対応した累積的な変形が認められる.またこの河成段丘群は,既知の活断層である十日町断層・珠川断層・津南断層と新たに認定した小根岸断層・霜条断層・宮栗断層による変位を受けている.当盆地内の活断層の活動度,変位地形から推定した断層面と地質構造の関係から,各断層をタイプ分けした.さらに,十日町盆地の活構造の活動を総合的に検討することを試みた.その結果,当盆地の褶曲運動は,少なくとも約50万年前から現在まで継続しており,盆地南部より北部において活発であることが明らかになった.また,当盆地の水平圧縮速度は1.4～2.7mm/yrより大きいと予想される.

新潟県十日町市田川において,下部更新統魚沼層のSK110とSK050の両火山灰層の間の層準(約1.6～1.2Ma)から長鼻類の足跡化石を発見した.産出層準からみてStegodon aurorae(Matsumoto)の足跡化石である可能性が高い.この化石は,魚沼層の陸生哺乳類相の貧困さを補う.足跡化石が形成された環境は,共産する化石から,湿地林や止水域を伴う湿地であったと推定される.今後も足跡化石が魚沼層の湿地堆積物から見つかる可能性がある.
