Abstract Several studies propose that Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a multifactorial disorder implicating many prenatal and postnatal factors. The objective of our study was to determine the incidence and the risk factors that influenced ROP development and progression. We retrospectively compiled data of preterms with birth weight (BW) ≤ 1.500 g and/or gestational age (GA) < 32 weeks, or BW between 1.501 and 2.000 g and/or GA ≥ 32 weeks with oxygen supply > 72 h or unstable clinical course screened ...

The level of secondary reserve needed in a power system is traditionally settled by system operators according to engineering criteria. This paper proposes a novel methodology to determine the optimum level of secondary reserve based on both engineering and economic criteria. Within the proposed approach a price elastic-quantity demand curve for the secondary reserve is built. This approach assumes that the provision of secondary reserve is made under a competitive market. In this market, the supply ...

This paper analyzes how traditional regulation of distribution system operators (DSO) has to be improved to accommodate higher levels of distributed generation (DG). In addition, new economic signals to be given to DG operators for system efficient integration are proposed. Regulatory improvements at the European level are recommended. Recommendations are centered on schemes for DSO revenue compensation to consider incremental network costs due to DG, distribution network planning integrating DG, ...

This paper presents a new approach to design reactive power capacity markets. Under this approach annual auctions to procure reactive power capacity are conducted by the system operator. Two products are defined, reactive power generation and absorption capacity, which can be supplied by different independent VAR sources, such as generators, SVCs, capacitor banks and shunt reactors. Reactive power capacity is allocated using an optimization algorithm that matches capacity bids and system reactive ...

The SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant emerged showing higher transmissibility and possibly higher resistance to current COVID-19 vaccines than other variants dominating the global pandemic. In March 2020 we performed a study in clinical samples, where we found that a portion of genomes in the SARS-CoV-2 viral population accumulated deletions immediately before the S1/S2 cleavage site (furin-like cleavage site, PRRAR/S) of the spike gene, generating a frameshift and appearance of a premature stop codon. ...

Abstract A fragment of the NWA 2975 Martian meteorite, an enriched basaltic shergottite, was analysed to complete its geochemical characterisation performed 10 years ago. By this means, the feasibility of the employed techniques in a combined way for present and future space exploration missions can be tested. For this aim, Raman spectroscopy was used supported by micro energy dispersive X‐ray fluorescence (μ‐EDXRF) and laser‐induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for an accurate interpretation of ...

Epidemics and pandemics have occurred since the beginning of time, resulting in millions of deaths. Many such disease outbreaks are caused by viruses. Some viruses, particularly RNA viruses, are characterized by their high genetic variability, and this can affect certain phenotypic features: tropism, antigenicity, and susceptibility to antiviral drugs, vaccines, and the host immune response. The best strategy to face the emergence of new infectious genomes is prompt identification. However, currently ...

Virus pandemics have happened, are happening and will happen again. In recent decades, the rate of zoonotic viral spillover into humans has accelerated, mirroring the expansion of our global footprint and travel network, including the expansion of viral vectors and the destruction of natural spaces, bringing humans closer to wild animals. Once viral cross-species transmission to humans occurs, transmission cannot be stopped by cement walls but by developing barriers based on knowledge that can prevent ...

A common trait among RNA viruses is their high capability to acquire genetic variability due to viral and host mechanisms. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) analysis enables the deep study of the viral quasispecies in samples from infected individuals. In this study, the viral quasispecies complexity and single nucleotide polymorphisms of the SARS-CoV-2 spike gene of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients with mild or severe disease were investigated using next-generation sequencing (Illumina ...

The unequivocal identification of hepatitis C virus (HCV) subtypes 1a/1b and genotypes 2 to 6 is required for optimizing the effectiveness of interferon-free, direct-acting antiviral therapies. We compared the performance of a new real-time HCV genotyping assay used on the Cobas 4800 system (C4800) with that of high-resolution HCV subtyping (HRCS). In total, 502 samples were used, including 184 samples from chronic HCV patients (from routine laboratory activity during April 2016), 5 stored samples with ...

The European Energy Policy promotes renewable energy sources and energy efficiency as means to mitigate environmental impact, increase security of supply and ensure economic competitiveness. As a result, the penetration levels of distributed generation (DG) in electricity networks are bound to increase. Distribution networks and distribution system operators (DSOs) will be especially affected by growing levels of DG. This paper reviews the current regulation of distribution in the European Union Member ...

Predicting disease severity in patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 is difficult. Soluble angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (sACE2) arises from the shedding of membrane ACE2 (mACE2), which is a receptor for SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. We evaluated the predictive value of sACE2 compared with known biomarkers of inflammation and tissue damage (CRP, GDF-15, IL-6, and sFlt-1) in 850 patients with and without SARS-CoV-2 with different clinical outcomes. For univariate analyses, median differences between biomarker ...

A motion texture is an instantaneous motion map extracted from a dynamic texture. We observe that such motion maps exhibit values of two types: a discrete component at zero (absence of motion) and continuous motion values. We thus develop a mixed-state Markov random field model to represent motion textures. The core of our approach is to show that motion information is powerful enough to classify and segment dynamic textures if it is properly modeled regarding its specific nature and the local interactions ...

In this work we present a new way of simultaneously solving the problems of motion detection and background image reconstruction. An accurate estimation of the background is only possible if we locate the moving objects. Meanwhile, a correct motion detection is achieved if we have a good available background model. The key of our joint approach is to define a single random process that can take two types of values, instead of defining two different processes, one symbolic (motion detection) and one ...

The sustained cost reduction of solar photovoltaics (PV) modules together with the introduction of self-consumption policies is transforming passive electricity consumers into active ones (prosumers). However, self-consumption policies may present very different designs and results mainly depending on the schemes that are put in place. Policy design implementations can have important consequences on the PV sizing and on the deployment rate, which impact the overall power sector from both a technical ...

Abstract Nowadays, the amount of distributed generation (DG) connected to distribution networks is increasing significantly. In a European context, one of the main drivers for this growth is the support of electricity generation from renewable energy sources (RES) and combined heat and power (CHP) plants. Hence, these DG units mostly consist of non‐controllable generation. Distribution is a regulated activity which is, at least, legally and functionally unbundled from the generation activity. These ...

The promotion of electricity generation from renewable energy sources (RES) and combined heat and power (CHP) has resulted in increasing penetration levels of distributed generation (DG). However, large-scale connection of DG involves profound changes in the operation and planning of electricity distribution networks. Distribution System Operators (DSOs) play a key role since these agents have to provide flexibility to their networks in order to integrate DG. Article 14.7 of EU Electricity Directive ...

Universal history is characterized by continuous evolution, in which civilizations are born and die. This evolution is associated with multiple factors, among which the role of microorganisms is often overlooked. Viruses and bacteria have written or decisively contributed to terrible episodes of history, such as the Black Death in 14th century Europe, the annihilation of pre-Columbian American civilizations, and pandemics such as the 1918 Spanish flu or the current COVID-19 pandemic caused by the ...

From observations in rodents, it has been suggested that the cellular basis of learning-dependent changes, detected using structural MRI, may be increased dendritic spine density, alterations in astrocyte volume, and adaptations within intracortical myelin. Myelin plasticity is crucial for neurological function, and active myelination is required for learning and memory. However, the dynamics of myelin plasticity and how it relates to morphometric-based measurements of structural plasticity remains ...

Reference Network Models (RNMs) are large-scale distribution network planning tools. RNMs can be used by policy makers and regulators to estimate efficient distribution costs. This is a very challenging task, particularly being network planning a combinatorial problem, which is especially difficult to solve due to the vast size of the distribution areas, and the use of several voltage levels. This chapter presents the main features of RNMs developed by the authors, including high performance requirements ...
