Risky health behaviors such as smoking, drinking alcohol, drug use, unprotected sex, and poor diets and sedentary lifestyles (leading to obesity) are a major source of preventable deaths. This chapter overviews the theoretical frameworks for, and empirical evidence on, the economics of risky health behaviors. It describes traditional economic approaches emphasizing utility maximization that, under certain assumptions, result in Pareto-optimal outcomes and a limited role for policy interventions. ...

Oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system (CNS) produce myelin sheaths that insulate axons to ensure fast propagation of action potentials. beta1 integrins regulate the myelination of peripheral nerves, but their function during the myelination of axonal tracts in the CNS is unclear. Here we show that genetically modified mice lacking beta1 integrins in the CNS present a deficit in myelination but no defects in the development of the oligodendroglial lineage. Instead, in vitro data show that ...

Mycobacterium phenotypic hits are a good reservoir for new chemotypes for the treatment of tuberculosis. However, the absence of defined molecular targets and modes of action could lead to failure in drug development. Therefore, a combination of ligand-based and structure-based chemogenomic approaches followed by biophysical and biochemical validation have been used to identify targets for Mycobacterium tuberculosis phenotypic hits. Our approach identified EthR and InhA as targets for several hits, ...

Chloroplasts are a common feature of plant cells and aspects of their metabolism, including photosynthesis, are influenced by low-temperature conditions. Chloroplasts contain a small circular genome that encodes essential components of the photosynthetic apparatus and chloroplast transcription/translation machinery. Here, we show that in Arabidopsis, a nuclear-encoded sigma factor that controls chloroplast transcription (SIGMA FACTOR5) contributes to adaptation to low-temperature conditions. This ...

The United Nations (UN) launched the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to address an ongoing crisis: human pressure leading to unprecedented environmental degradation, climatic change, social inequality, and other negative planet-wide consequences. This crisis stems from a dramatic increase in human appropriation of natural resources to keep pace with rapid population growth, dietary shifts toward higher consumption of animal products, and higher demand for energy (1, 2). There is an increased ...

ABSTRACT We present <?CDATA ${\rm{H}}\alpha $?> <?MML H &agr; ?> gas kinematics for 178 star-forming galaxies at <?CDATA $z\sim 2$?> <?MML z ∼ 2 ?> from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field survey. We have developed models to interpret the kinematic measurements from fixed-angle multi-object spectroscopy, using structural parameters derived from Cosmic Assembly Near-Infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey Hubble Space Telescope /F160W imaging. For 35 galaxies, we measure resolved rotation with a median of <?CDATA ${(V/{\sigma }_{V, ...

Pest risk maps are powerful visual communication tools to describe where invasive alien species might arrive, establish, spread, or cause harmful impacts. These maps inform strategic and tactical pest management decisions, such as potential restrictions on international trade or the design of pest surveys and domestic quarantines. Diverse methods are available to create pest risk maps, and can potentially yield different depictions of risk for the same species. Inherent uncertainties about the biology ...

THYROID hormone receptor β–deficient (TRβ–/–) mice have defective auditory-evoked brain stem responses (ABR). Since in vitro, TRβ binds to DNA as homodimers or as heterodimers with retinoid X receptors (RXRs), we investigated whether the TRβ–/– phenotype may reflect loss of RXR-TRβ heterodimer or TRβ homo-dimer function. Normal ABR thresholds were recorded in RXRβ–/–, RXRγ–/– RXRα–/+ and RXR compound mutant mice. When RXR mutations were introduced onto TRβ–/+ or TR–/– backgrounds, thresholds were dictated ...

Abstract We investigate the evolution of galaxy gas-phase metallicity (O/H) over the range z = 0–3.3 using samples of ∼300 galaxies at z ∼ 2.3 and ∼150 galaxies at z ∼ 3.3 from the MOSDEF survey. This analysis crucially utilizes different metallicity calibrations at z ∼ 0 and z > 1 to account for evolving interstellar medium (ISM) conditions. We find significant correlations between O/H and stellar mass ( M * ) at z ∼ 2.3 and z ∼ 3.3. The low-mass power-law slope of the mass–metallicity relation (MZR) is remarkably invariant ...

Population synthesis models predict that high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) populations produced in low metallicity environments should be more X-ray luminous, a trend supported by studies of nearby galaxies. This trend may be responsible for the observed increase of the X-ray luminosity ($L_{\mathrm{X}}$) per star formation rate (SFR) with redshift due to the decrease of metallicity ($Z$) at fixed stellar mass as a function of redshift. To test this hypothesis, we use a sample of 79 $z\sim2$ star-forming galaxies ...

Background: A limited number of studies investigated associations between serum neurofilament light chain (sNfL) and cognition in persons with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). Objective: To assess cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between sNfL levels, clinical, and cognitive performance in PwMS and age-matched healthy controls (HCs). Materials: One hundred twenty-seven PwMS (85 relapsing–remitting MS/42 progressive MS), 20 clinically isolated syndrome patients, and 52 HCs were followed for 5 years. ...

We present the first silicon chip-based calorimeter with segmented-flow technology (SFT) for the study of solid and aggregated samples. Solid particles or biological aggregates up to 1.5 mm are immersed in segments of aqueous solutions. The segments are transported to the heat flow detector of the calorimeter by a carrier liquid. The interfacial tension between the aqueous segments and the water immiscible carrier liquid ensures plug flow and prevents sample dispersion. At a typical segment volume ...
