This study used data drawn from a large, national sample to describe transition practices provided to 1989 children with disabilities as they entered their kindergarten year, obtained through a survey administered to kindergarten teachers. Using path modeling, we examined the child and family, school, and district factors that predict which children and families receive high- and low-intensity transition support as they enter kindergarten and, in particular, what types of high-intensity practices ...

An algorithm for the automated segmentation of epithelial tissue in digital images of histologic tissue sections of odontogenic cysts (cysts originating from residual odontogenic epithelium) is presented. The algorithm features an image standardization process that greatly reduces variation in luminance and chrominance between images due to variations in sample preparation. Segmentation of the epithelial regions of images uses an algorithm based on binary graph cuts where graph weights depend on ...

Three cases of oral blue nevus are presented. A comparison of the ultrastructural features of blue nevus cells with those of schwannoma cells indicates that, among other similarities, both exhibit a surrounding external lamina (basement membrane). The significant difference is that blue nevus cells are capable of synthesizing melanin as evidenced by the presence of the entire melanosome maturation sequence within their cytoplasm, a feature not seen in the cells of schwannomas. This fundamental difference ...

There is considerable confusion in the literature concerning the terms monomorphic adenoma, basal cell adenoma, and canalicular adenoma. This article traces the history of these terms as applied to the pathology of salivary gland tumors and attempts to clarify their usage. It is recommended (1) that monomorphic adenoma be used, as it was originally intended, as a nosologic grouping for all benign epithelial salivary gland tumors that are not pleomorphic adenomas, (2) that basal cell adenoma be used ...

This case report describes an unusual parotid salivary gland tumor in which major proliferating elements arise in relation to well-differentiated, branching ducts. Both light and electron microscopic examination indicates that these ducts are formed by two distinct cell layers, an inner row of luminal epithelial cells and an outer layer of modified myoepithelial cells. It is from this outer layer of cells that discrete clusters of uniform basaloid cells develop. Although the majority of basaloid ...

Abstract The heterotopic gastric cyst of the oral cavity is a rare lesion. A recurrent gastric cyst in the floor of the mouth of a young female patient is presented. Current theories dealing with the histogenesis of these lesions are presented and discussed. Based on the available embryologic and clinical information, a new histogenetic concept for the development of the heterotopic gastric cyst is proposed.

The evidence that canalicular adenomas and basal cell adenomas are separate entities is presented in this article. The clinical features were studied in a series of 13 previously unreported salivary gland tumors (5 canalicular adenomas and 8 basal cell adenomas) and 99 examples derived from the literature (68 canalicular adenomas and 31 basal cell adenomas). Representative tumors from the new cases and from 66 referred cases were studied by histologic, histochemical, and electron microscopic techniques. ...

Four cases of epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of salivary gland origin are presented and discussed. The mean age of these four patients was 68 years, with an age range of 51 to 78 years. Three of the patients were women, and one was a man. This article emphasizes the light microscopic, histochemical, and ultrastructural features of the neoplasm. Electron microscopic examination of glutaraldehyde-fixed fresh tissue and previously formalin-fixed tissue reveals that the characteristic clear cytoplasm ...
