Abstract Wavepacket tunneling, in the relativistic limit, is studied via solutions to the Dirac equation for a square barrier potential. Specifically, the arrival time distribution (the time-dependent flux) is computed for wavepackets initiated far away from the barrier, and whose momentum is well below the threshold for above-barrier transmission. The resulting distributions exhibit peaks at shorter times than those of photons with the same initial wavepacket transmitting through a vacuum. However, ...

We investigate the phase separation of a shaken mixture of glass and magnetised steel spheres after a sudden quench of the shaker amplitude. After quenching, transient networks of steel spheres emerge in the experiment. For the developing network clusters we estimate the number of spheres in them, and the characteristic path lengths. We find that both quantities follow a log-normal distribution function. Moreover, we study the temporal evolution of the networks. In the sequence of snapshots we observe ...

In this work, our purpose is to show how the symmetry of identical particles can influence the time evolution of free particles in the nonrelativistic and relativistic domains as well as in the scattering by a potential δ-barrier. For this goal, we consider a system of either two distinguishable or indistinguishable (bosons and fermions) particles. Two sets of initial conditions have been studied: different initial locations with the same momenta, and the same locations with different momenta. The ...

Early electrophysiological brain oscillations recorded in preterm babies and newborn rodents are initially mostly driven by bottom-up sensorimotor activity and only later can detach from external inputs. This is a hallmark of most developing brain areas, including the hippocampus, which, in the adult brain, functions in integrating external inputs onto internal dynamics. Such developmental disengagement from external inputs is likely a fundamental step for the proper development of cognitive internal ...

Neutralizing autoantibodies against type I interferons (IFNs) have been found in some patients with critical coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). However, the prevalence of these antibodies, their longitudinal dynamics across the disease severity scale, and their functional effects on circulating leukocytes remain unknown. Here, in 284 patients with COVID-19, we found type I IFN–specific autoantibodies in peripheral ...

Using the time parameter in the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation, we study the time of flight for a particle tunneling through a square barrier potential. Comparing the mean and variance of the energy and the flight time for transmitted and reflected particles, using both density and flux distributions, we find that, when accounting for momentum filtering, the suitably normalized transmitted and reflected distributions are identical in both the density and flux cases. Glioma contains malignant cells in diverse states. Here, we combine spatial transcriptomics, spatial proteomics, and computational approaches to define glioma cellular states and uncover their organization. We find three prominent modes of organization. First, gliomas are composed of small local environments, each typically enriched with one major cellular state. Second, specific pairs of states preferentially reside in proximity across multiple scales. This pairing of states is consistent across ...

31-O-Desmethylimmunomycin O: methyltransferase (DIMT), an enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of immunomycin (ascomycin/FR-900520), was used to synthesize three analogs of this immunosuppressant compound. These compounds were assigned the following structures: 13-O-desmethyl-, 15-O-desmethyl- and 13,15-O-bisdesmethyl-immunomycins. Two of these compounds, namely, 15-O-desmethyl- and 13,15-O-bismethyl-immunomycins have novel structures and were examined for possible immunosuppressive activity by in ...

Biodiversity continues to decline in the face of increasing anthropogenic pressures such as habitat destruction, exploitation, pollution and introduction of alien species. Existing global databases of species' threat status or population time series are dominated by charismatic species. The collation of datasets with broad taxonomic and biogeographic extents, and that support computation of a range of biodiversity indicators, is necessary to enable better understanding of historical declines and ...

Abstract Different approaches for considering barrier crossing times are analyzed, with special emphasis on recent experiments which attempt to measure what is commonly referred to as the Larmor tunneling time. We show that that these experiments cannot reveal the Larmor time, due to the finite energy width of the incident particles. The Larmor time, which measures changes in spin polarization, is classified together with other measurements such as the Buttiker–Landauer oscillating barrier time ...

In recent years, the Flory-Huggins-Zuo Equation of State (FHZ EoS) has been utilized to treat asphaltene gradient data in many oilfield reservoirs. The FHZ EoS employs asphaltene species from the Yen-Mullins model consisting of molecules, nanoaggregates and clusters of nanoaggregates; the specific species used depends primarily on the concentration of asphaltenes but also on the asphaltene stability. Reservoirs with equilibrated asphaltenes are repeatedly found to produce oil as a single flow unit ...

Background: There is a lack of Métis-guided participatory research on factors that contribute to individual, family and community well-being, such as developing social support and engaging in cultural, social and historical processes for healing and health. The purpose of this study was to explore links among health, spirituality and well-being within the Métis Nation of Alberta (MNA) – Region 3. Methods: In the largest of 12 MNA – Region 3 communities, together with a working group of 9 community members, informal ...

Changing aircraft operational procedures is one way of mitigating the environmental impacts of aviation in relatively short timeframes with existing aircraft types. However, to date these mitigations have not been evaluated or compared in a systematic manner that considers both their environmental impact reduction potential and their ability to be successfully implemented. This article presents a comprehensive identification and systematic evaluation of potential near-term operational changes to ...

The neglected tropical disease onchocerciasis, or river blindness, is caused by infection with the filarial nematode Onchocerca volvulus . Current estimates indicate that 17 million people are infected worldwide, the majority of them living in Africa. Today there are no non-invasive tests available that can detect ongoing infection, and that can be used for effective monitoring of elimination programs. In addition, to enable pharmacodynamic studies with novel macrofilaricide drug candidates, surrogate ...
