Changes in membrane tension resulting from membrane stretch represent one of the key elements in blood flow regulation in vascular smooth muscle. The EMPA-KIDNEY trial showed that empagliflozin reduced the risk of the primary composite outcome of kidney disease progression or cardiovascular death in patients with chronic kidney disease mainly through slowing progression.
