To evaluate the utility of polyphosphate kinase gene (ppk)-specified polyphosphate in mercury remediation, a fusion plasmid, pMK27, with ppk from Klebsiella aerogenes and mercury transport genes, merT and merP, from Pseudomonas K-62, was constructed. The transcription and translation of ppk, merT and merP were found to be mercury-inducible. The ppk-specified polyphosphate was identified in cells preinduced by Hg2+, but not in cells without mercury induction, suggesting that the synthesis of polyphosphate ...

An efficient expression system was constructed in Escherichia coli that produced a 33-kDa fragment, C-274, of human fibronectin with a strong cell-adhesive activity. The entire sequence of the heparin-binding domain with 271 amino acids, H-271, was also expressed. Deletion analysis of the type III repeats showed that the heparin-binding site was at type III-13. The cell-adhesive activity of a fusion protein, CH-271, containing the cell- and the heparin-binding domains was twice that of C-274 when ...

Recombinant fibronectin (FN) fragments and their mutant proteins were produced to elucidate the role of type I11 homology repeats in cell adhesive activity within the cell-binding domain of FN. Cell adhesive activity of the 11.5-kDa fragment, the cell attachment site of the cell-binding domain, was <0.1% that of native FN despite the presence of the Arg-Gly-Asp-Ser sequence. The activity increased as type I11 homology repeats were added to the N terminus of the 11.5-kDa fragment, and a 52-kDa fragment ...

Consumer electronics equipped with a microphone array, such as car navigation devices and headsets commonly implement speech enhancement techniques based on the gradient method to cope with additive noise. However, while these techniques had been originally developed for voice communication and can maximize the signal-to-distortion ratio (SDR), they cannot always maximize automatic speech recognition (ASR) accuracy. For this reason, the front-end speech enhancement parameters have been adjusted by ...

We fabricated c ‐axis‐oriented KSr 2 Nb 5 O 15 (KSN) ceramics using a rotating strong magnetic field with subsequent sintering. The degree of orientation of the green compact was about 0.1 for (00 l ), as evaluated from the Lotgering factor in X‐ray diffraction. The orientation of the structure was enhanced by sintering at 1673 K; the Lotgering factor of the sintered body increased to 0.8. Microstructural examination indicated a well‐oriented structure in which the longitudinal axes of the rectangular‐ ...

Abstract A variety of benzylated 1-OH derivatives, having an acetyl or an allyl group, of d-glucose, d-galactose, d-mannose, d-xylose, l-arabinose, l-fucose, and l-rhamnose, were synthesized from the corresponding protected 2-methoxyethyl glycosides through a brief treatment with TiCl4 in dichloromethane and a subsequent hydrolysis of the intermediary 1-Cl derivatives on a silica-gel column.

Under acute stress conditions in the rat, there is rapid and transient increase in circulating prolactin (PRL). This leads to an elevated expression of the long form of PRLR (PRLR-L) first in the hypothalamus and the choroid plexus. This increase in PRL is involved in the inhibition of stress-induced hypocalcemia and gastric erosion. In this study we used rat PRL and a PRLR morpholino-antisense oligonucleotide to elucidate the mechanism by which hypothalamic PRLR mediates the inhibition of restraint ...

C‐EGF had both cell‐adhesive and EGF activities, so it might be more effective than EGF in therapeutic applications. This fusion system would be ...

We utilized recombinant fibronectin polypeptides with cell-binding domain and heparin-binding domains (referred to as C-274 and H-271, respectively) and their fusion polypeptide (CH-271) to examine the role of sulfated polysaccharide heparin and/or the functional domains of fibronectin in modulating tumor cell behavior. Both C-274 and CH-271 polypeptides with cell-binding domains promoted the adhesion and migration of B16-BL6 melanoma cells, whereas H-271 did not. Heparin bound to the immobilized ...

CS1 peptide which is present within type III homology connecting segment (IIICS) as well as C‐274 (cell‐binding domain) were able to inhibit experimental lung metastasis when co‐injected intravenously (iv) with B16‐BL6 melanoma cells, while H‐271 (heparin‐binding domain) could not. As a microbial-environmental-control-type deodorizing system, we have developed a compact biotrickling filter system for small-scale livestock farms. The performance of the compact co-current biotrickling filter operated at high recycle liquid flow rates was systematically examined. The Krüppel-associated box (KRAB)-containing zinc finger proteins (ZFPs) comprise the largest family of zinc finger transcription factors that function as transcriptional repressors. In the study of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF)-RET signaling, we have identified bone marrow zinc finger 3 (BMZF3), encoding a KRAB-ZFP, as a GDNF-inducible gene by differential display analysis. The expression of BMZF3 transcripts in the human neuroblastoma cell line TGW increased 1h after GDNF stimulation, ...

Abstract The acetylation of methyl 2,3-dimethyl-4- and -7-benzofurancarboxylates was carried out by the action of acetyl chloride and aluminum chloride in carbon disulfide at room temperature to afford the 6-acetyl compounds; these compounds were converted to keto-acids by hydrolysis, and then to the known dicarboxylic acid or to the known 6-acetylbenzofuran. The alkylation of acetyl and methoxycarbonyl derivatives of 2,3-dimethylbenzofuran was carried out by the action of n- or iso-propyl bromide ...

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) is a potentially curative therapy for FLT3 internal tandem duplication mutant (FLT3-ITD+) acute myeloid leukemia, but relapse rate is high. A recent study showed that sorafenib, a first generation FLT3 and multikinase inhibitor, enhanced graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) effects against FLT3-ITD+ leukemia via interleukin-15 (IL-15) production. However, it remains to be clarified whether this effect could be mediated by selective FLT3 inhibition. ...

In climate change research, future scenarios of greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions generated by integrated assessment models (IAMs) are used in climate models (CMs) and earth system models to analyze future interactions and feedback between human activities and climate. However, the spatial resolutions of IAMs and CMs differ. IAMs usually disaggregate the world into 10-30 aggregated regions, whereas CMs require a grid-based spatial resolution. Therefore, downscaling emissions data from IAMs ...

Abstract Fractionation of barbados cherry (acerola fruit, a fruit of Malpighia emarginata DC.) extracts were performed by organic solvent extractions and column chromatographies, using two extraction methods. Higher cytotoxic activity was concentrated in fractions A4 and A6 (acetone extract), and H3 and HE3 (hexane extract). These four fractions showed higher cytotoxic activity against tumor cell lines such as human oral squamous cell carcinoma (HSC‐2) and human submandibular gland carcinoma (HSG), when ...

Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is a common autoimmune blistering disorder with unknown etiology. Recently, increasing numbers of BP cases which developed under the medication with dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP4i), widely used antihyperglycemic drugs, have been reported in published works. Here, we report a case of DPP4i (teneligliptin)-associated BP that developed in a 70-year-old Japanese man. Interestingly, the patient had acquired reactive perforating collagenosis (ARPC), which is also known to ...
