This report introduces a type of plasmonic crystal that consists of metal coated nanostructures of relief molded on a polymer film as a substrate for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Such crystals exhibit SERS enhancement factors of ∼105, over large areas and with sufficiently high levels of uniformity for precise two-dimensional Raman mapping of surface bound monolayers. The ease of fabrication together with the high sensitivities and spatial resolution that can be achieved suggests an attractive ...

The unique electronic properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) make them promising candidates for next generation electronics, particularly in systems that demand high frequency (e.g., radio frequency, RF) operation. Transistors that incorporate perfectly aligned, parallel arrays of SWNTs avoid the practical limitations of devices that use individual tubes, and they also enable comprehensive experimental and theoretical evaluation of the intrinsic properties. Thus, devices consisting of ...

Tony Banks, Camille Richard, Ping Li, Yan Zhaoli,

Grassland degradation in China is widely perceived to be accelerating, and the blame is often placed by government officials and researchers on a supposed "tragedy of the commons." Grassland policy seeks to address this through the establishment of household tenure and the derivation and external enforcement of household stocking rates. Drawing upon the authors' field research at a number of sites in western China, this article argues that the actual tenure situation is not as open access as is commonly ...

The potential to exploit single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in advanced electronics represents a continuing, major source of interest in these materials. However, scalable integration of SWNTs into circuits is challenging because of difficulties in controlling the geometries, spatial positions, and electronic properties of individual tubes. We have implemented solutions to some of these challenges to yield radio frequency (RF) SWNT analog electronic devices, such as narrow band amplifiers operating ...

Operation of a carbon nanotube field effect transistor (FET) oscillator at a record frequency of 500 MHz is described. The FET was fabricated using a large parallel array of single-walled nanotubes grown by chemical vapor deposition on ST-quartz substrates. Matching of the gate capacitance with a series inductor enabled greater than unity net oscillator loop gain to be achieved at 500 MHz.

The method involves multiple cycles of chemical vapor deposition growth to achieve densities and levels of uniformity in coverage better than those previously possible.

We have studied the scaling of controlled nonlinear buckling processes in materials with dimensions in the molecular range (i.e., ∼1 nm) through experimental and theoretical studies of buckling in individual single-wall carbon nanotubes on substrates of poly(dimethylsiloxane). The results show not only the ability to create and manipulate patterns of buckling at these molecular scales, but also, that analytical continuum mechanics theory can explain, quantitatively, all measurable aspects of this ...

Tony Banks,

It is widely perceived that the degradation of China’s rangelands has accelerated since the introduction of rural reforms in the late 1970s. The popular explanation for this phenomenon has been that a ‘tragedy of the commons’ exists, as privately‐owned livestock are being grazed on ‘common’ land. Since the passing of the Rangeland Law in 1985, Chinese pastoral tenure policy has emphasized the establishment of individual household tenure as a necessary condition for improving incentives for sustainable ...

administration but informal common property arrangements among pastoralists have also emerged. There is the common perception among government officials and researchers that the significant increase in livestock numbers since the privatisation of herds in 1985 has considerably exacerbated pastoral land degradation problems. The situation is widely interpreted by them, as well as foreign consultants, as a classical 'tragedy of the commons' problem, an invariable outcome of having privately owned livestock ...

N-Acyloxy-N-alkoxyamides are anomeric amides that are direct-acting mutagens. They have been shown to damage DNA in the major and the minor grooves in a pH and sequence-selective manner. In acidic media, they damage adenines at N3 in the minor groove but above neutral pH, only guanine is damaged at N7 in the major groove. Both the acyloxy leaving group and the alkoxy group at the amide nitrogen are responsible for their electrophilicity and Salmonella mutagenicities in TA100 and DNA damage data ...

N-acyloxy-N-alkoxyamides are direct-acting mutagens in Salmonella typhimurium TA100 and react with DNA at N7 of guanine and N3 of adenine. From extensive mutagenicity data a quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) has been derived that predicts activity to be dependent upon hydrophobicity (represented by log P) and stability to chemical reactions (through the pKA value of the leaving carboxylic acid group). Sterically bulky substituents (represented by Taft ES parameters) reduce activity. ...

N-acyloxy-N-alkoxybenzamides are mutagenic in TA100 without the need for metabolic activation with S9. Electronic effects of substituents on both the benzamide ring in N-acetoxy-N-butoxybenzamides or the benzyloxy ring in N-acetoxy-N-benzyloxybenzamides do not influence mutagenicity levels. For N-benzoyloxy-N-benzyloxybenzamides, mutagenicity levels are inversely related to the electron-withdrawing effect of substituents on the benzoyloxy leaving group. Since reactivities increase with increasing ...
