Tony Thompson,

This research provides insight into one US state‘s effort to incorporate higherorder thinking on its Algebra I End-of-Course tests. To facilitate the inclusion of higher-order thinking, the state used Dimensions of Thinking (Marzano et al., 1988) and Bloom’s Taxonomy (Bloom et al., 1956). An analysis of Algebra I test items found that the state‘s initial interpretation and application of Dimensions of Thinking and Bloom’s Taxonomy was faulty and inconsistent; as a result, few Algebra I test items ...

Joseph Lee Rodgers, Tony Thompson,

A number of model-based scaling methods have been developed that apply to asymmetric proximity matrices. A flexible data analysis approach is pro posed that combines two psychometric procedures— seriation and multidimensional scaling (MDS). The method uses seriation to define an empirical order ing of the stimuli, and then uses MDS to scale the two separate triangles of the proximity matrix defined by this ordering. The MDS solution con tains directed distances, which define an "extra" dimension that ...

This study investigated mathematics teachers' interpretation of higher-order thinking in Bloom's Taxonomy.Thirty-two high school mathematics teachers from the southeast U.S. were asked to (a) define lower-and higher-order thinking, (b) identify which thinking skills in Bloom's Taxonomy represented lower-and higher-order thinking, and (c) create an Algebra I final exam item representative of each thinking skill. Results indicate that mathematics teachers have difficulty interpreting the thinking skills ...

In this study, the relationships among mathematical beliefs, sources of self-regulation, and achievement for university students enrolled in remedial mathematics were studied. Ninety-four students completed 2 surveys to measure mathematical beliefs and active, dynamic, and multiplesource self-regulation. Students who reported a more sophisticated belief about doing, validating, and learning mathematics were more likely to report greater frequency of all three types of selfregulation. The belief ...

A practical concern for many existing tests is that subscore test lengths are too short to provide reliable and meaningful measurement. A possible method of improving the subscale reliability and validity would be to make use of collateral information provided by items from other subscales of the same test. To this end, the purpose of this article is to compare two different formulations of an alternative Item Response Theory (IRT) model developed to parameterize unidimensional projections of multidimensional ...

Measurements were made using a transducer bar which allowed the simultaneous recording of the vertical and horizontal components of any force applied to it by the subject. In each experimental condition, each subject exerted his or herself in all directions in the sagittal plane (ie, that plane which bisects an individual in the antero-posterior direction). Thirty conditions were investigated. Five ...

Five children from two consanguineous families presented with epilepsy beginning in infancy and severe ataxia, moderate sensorineural deafness, and a renal salt-losing tubulopathy with normotensive hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis. We investigated the genetic basis of this autosomal recessive disease, which we call the EAST syndrome (the presence of epilepsy, ataxia, sensorineural deafness, and tubulopathy).

Although largely developed at the species level, these assessments have recently been applied at the ecosystem level. In South Africa, national legislation provides for the listing and protection of threatened ecosystems. We assessed how land‐cover mapping and the detail of ecosystem classification affected the results of risk assessments that were based on extent of habitat loss. We tested ...
